Propagating compaction bands in confined compression of snow: Experiment and Modelling

We show that the plastic deformation of snow under uniaxial compression is characterized by complex spatio-temporal strain localization phenomena. Deformation is characterized by repeated nucleation and propagation of compaction bands. Compaction bands are also observed during the very first stage of compression of solid foams where a single band moves across the sample at approximately constant stress. However, snow differs from these materials as repeated nucleation and propagation of bands occurs throughout the subsequent hardening stage until the end of the deformation experiment. Band nucleation and/or reflection of bands at the sample boundaries are accompanied by stress drops which punctuate the stress strain curve. A constitutive model is proposed which quantitatively reproduces all features of this oscillatory deformation mode. To this end, a well-established compressive plasticity framework for solid foams is generalized to account for shear softening behavior, time dependence of microstructure (`rapid sintering') and non-locality of damage processes in snow.

A simple method for generating Bose-Einstein condensates in a weak hybrid trap

We report on a simple novel trapping scheme for the generation of Bose-Einstein condensates of $^{87}$Rb atoms. This scheme employs a near-infrared single beam optical dipole trap combined with a weak magnetic quadrupole field as used for magneto-optical trapping to enhance the confinement in axial direction. Efficient forced evaporative cooling to the phase transition is achieved in this weak hybrid trap via reduction of the laser intensity of the optical dipole trap at constant magnetic field gradient.

Roughening and pinning of interface cracks in shear delamination of thin films

We investigate the roughening of shear cracks running along the interface between a thin film and a rigid substrate. We demonstrate that short-range correlated fluctuations of the interface strength lead to self-affine roughening of the crack front as the driving force (the applied shear stress/stress intensity factor) increases towards a critical value. We investigate the disorder-induced perturbations of the crack displacement field and crack energy, and use the results to determine the crack pinning force and to assess the shape of the critical crack. The analytical arguments are validated by comparison with simulations of interface cracking.

A compact dual atom interferometer gyroscope based on laser-cooled rubidium

We present a compact and transportable inertial sensor for precision sensing of rotations and accelerations. The sensor consists of a dual Mach-Zehnder-type atom interferometer operated with laser-cooled $^{87}$Rb. Raman processes are employed to coherently manipulate the matter waves. We describe and characterize the experimental apparatus. A method for passing from a compact geometry to an extended interferometer with three independent atom-light interaction zones is proposed and investigated. The extended geometry will enhance the sensitivity by more than two orders of magnitude which is necessary to achieve sensitivities better than $10^{-8} $rad/s/$\sqrt{\rm Hz}$.

Strain bursts in plastically deforming Molybdenum micro- and nanopillars

Plastic deformation of micron and sub-micron scale specimens is characterized by intermittent sequences of large strain bursts (dislocation avalanches) which are separated by regions of near-elastic loading. In the present investigation we perform a statistical characterization of strain bursts observed in stress-controlled compressive deformation of monocrystalline Molybdenum micropillars. We characterize the bursts in terms of the associated elongation increments and peak deformation rates, and demonstrate that these quantities follow power-law distributions that do not depend on specimen orientation or stress rate. We also investigate the statistics of stress increments in between the bursts, which are found to be Weibull distributed and exhibit a characteristic size effect. We discuss our findings in view of observations of deformation bursts in other materials, such as face-centered cubic and hexagonal metals.

Narrow bandwidth interference filter-stabilized diode laser systems for the manipulation of neutral atoms

We present and investigate different external cavity diode laser (ECDL) configurations for the manipulation of neutrals atoms, wavelength-stabilized by a narrow-band high transmission interference filter. A novel diode laser, providing high output power of more than 1 W, with a linewidth of less than 200 kHz, based on a self-seeded tapered amplifier chip has been developed. Additionally, we compare the optical and spectral properties of two laser systems based on common laser diodes, differing in their coating, as well as one, based on a distributed-feedback (DFB) diode. The linear cavity setup in all these systems combines a robust and compact design with a high wavelength tunability and an improved stability of the optical feedback compared to diode laser setups using diffraction gratings for wavelength discrimination.
