JWST reveals a rapid and strong day side variability of 55 Cancri e

The nature of the close-in rocky planet 55 Cnc e is puzzling despite having been observed extensively. Its optical and infrared occultation depths show temporal variability, in addition to a phase curve variability observed in the optical. We wish to explore the possibility that the variability originates from the planet being in a 3:2 spin-orbit resonance, thus showing different sides during occultations. We proposed and were awarded Cycle 1 time at the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to test this hypothesis. JWST/NIRCam observed five occultations (secondary eclipses), of which four were observed within a week, of the planet simultaneously at 2.1 and 4.5 μm. While the former gives band-integrated photometry, the latter provides a spectrum between 3.9-5.0 μm. We find that the occultation depths in both bandpasses are highly variable and change between a non-detection (-5 +/- 6 ppm and 7 +/- 9 ppm) to 96 +/- 8 ppm and 119 (+34) (-19) ppm at 2.1 μm and 4.5 μm, respectively. Interestingly, the variations in both bandpasses are not correlated and do not support the 3:2 spin-orbit resonance explanation. The measured brightness temperature at 4.5 μm varies between 873-2256 K and is lower than the expected dayside temperature of bare rock with no heat re-distribution (2500 K) which is indicative of an atmosphere. Our atmospheric retrieval analysis of occultation depth spectra at 4.5 μm finds that different visits statistically favour various atmospheric scenarios including a thin outgassed CO/CO2 atmosphere and a silicate rock vapour atmosphere. Some visits even support a flat line model. The observed variability could be explained by stochastic outgassing of CO/CO2, which is also hinted by retrievals. Alternatively, the variability, observed at both 2.1 and 4.5 μm, could be the result of a circumstellar patchy dust torus generated by volcanism on the planet.

Hidden domain boundary dynamics towards crystalline perfection

A central paradigm of non-equilibrium physics concerns the dynamics of heterogeneity and disorder, impacting processes ranging from the behavior of glasses to the emergent functionality of active matter. Understanding these complex mesoscopic systems requires probing the microscopic trajectories associated with irreversible processes, the role of fluctuations and entropy growth, and the timescales on which non-equilibrium responses are ultimately maintained. Approaches that illuminate these processes in model systems may enable a more general understanding of other heterogeneous non-equilibrium phenomena, and potentially define ultimate speed and energy cost limits for information processing technologies. Here, we apply ultrafast single shot x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy to resolve the non-equilibrium, heterogeneous, and irreversible mesoscale dynamics during a light-induced phase transition. This approach defines a new way of capturing the nucleation of the induced phase, the formation of transient mesoscale defects at the boundaries of the nuclei, and the eventual annihilation of these defects, even in systems with complex polarization topologies. A non-equilibrium response spanning >10 orders of magnitude in timescales is observed, with multistep behavior similar to the plateaus observed in supercooled liquids and glasses. We show how the observed time-dependent long-time correlations can be understood in terms of the stochastic dynamics of domain walls, encoded in effective waiting-time distributions with power-law tails. This work defines new possibilities for probing the non-equilibrium and correlated dynamics of disordered and heterogeneous media.

Ground-state mass of $^{22}$Al and test of state-of-the-art \textit{ab initio} calculations

The ground-state mass excess of the $T_{z}=-2$ drip-line nucleus $^{22}$Al is measured for the first time to be $18103(10)$ keV using the newly-developed B$ρ$-defined isochronous mass spectrometry method at the cooler storage ring in Lanzhou. The new mass excess value allowed us to determine the excitation energies of the two low-lying $1^+$ states in $^{22}$Al with significantly reduced uncertainties of 51 keV. Comparing to the analogue states in its mirror nucleus $^{22}$F, the mirror energy differences of the two $1^+$ states in the $^{22}$Al-$^{22}$F mirror pair are determined to be $-625(51)$ keV and $-330(51)$ keV, respectively. The excitation energies and the mirror energy differences are used to test the state-of-the-art \textit{ab initio} valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group calculations with four sets of interactions derived from the chiral effective field theory. The mechanism leading to the large mirror energy differences is investigated and attributed to the occupation of the $πs_{1/2}$ orbital.

Assessing Left Main Bifurcation Anatomy and Haemodynamics: A Potential Surrogate for Disease Risk in Suspected Coronary Artery Disease Without Stenosis?

Coronary anatomy governs local haemodynamics associated with atherosclerotic development, progression and ultimately adverse clinical outcomes. However, lack of large sample size studies and methods to link adverse haemodynamics to anatomical information has hindered meaningful insights to date. The Left Main coronary bifurcations of 127 patients with suspected coronary artery disease in the absence of significant stenosis were segmented from CTCA images before computing the local haemodynamics. We correlated 11 coronary anatomical characteristics with the normalised lumen area exposed to adverse haemodynamics linked with atherosclerotic processes. These include mean curvatures and diameters of branches, bifurcation and inflow angles, and Finet's ratio as the anatomical parameters, and low Time-Averaged Endothelial Shear Stress (lowTAESS<0.5Pa), high Oscillatory Shear Index (highOSI>0.1), and high Relative Residence Time (highRRT>4.17 1/Pa) for the haemodynamic consideration. We separately tested if the geometric measures and haemodynamics indicators differed between subgroups (sex, smokers, and those with hypertension). We then use a step-down multiple linear regression model to find the best model for predicting lowTAESS, highOSI and highRRT. Finet's Ratio (FR) significantly correlated to lowTAESS (p<0.001). Vessel diameters and curvature correlated to highOSI (both p<0.001). Finet's ratio, vessel diameters and daughter branch curvature independently correlated to RRT (all p<0.01). Our results indicate that specific anatomical vessel characteristics may be used as a surrogate of adverse haemodynamic environment associated with clinically adverse mechanisms of disease. This is especially powerful with the latest computing resources and may unlock clinical integration via standard imaging modalities as biomarkers without further computationally expensive simulations.

Densifying MIMO: Channel Modeling, Physical Constraints, and Performance Evaluation for Holographic Communications

As the backbone of the fifth-generation (5G) cellular network, massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) encounters a significant challenge in practical applications: how to deploy a large number of antenna elements within limited spaces. Recently, holographic communication has emerged as a potential solution to this issue. It employs dense antenna arrays and provides a tractable model. Nevertheless, some challenges must be addressed to actualize this innovative concept. One is the mutual coupling among antenna elements within an array. When the element spacing is small, near-field coupling becomes the dominant factor that strongly restricts the array performance. Another is the polarization of electromagnetic waves. As an intrinsic property, it was not fully considered in the previous channel modeling of holographic communication. The third is the lack of real-world experiments to show the potential and possible defects of a holographic communication system. In this paper, we propose an electromagnetic channel model based on the characteristics of electromagnetic waves. This model encompasses the impact of mutual coupling in the transceiver sides and the depolarization in the propagation environment. Furthermore, by approximating an infinite array, the performance restrictions of large-scale dense antenna arrays are also studied theoretically to exploit the potential of the proposed channel. In addition, numerical simulations and a channel measurement experiment are conducted. The findings reveal that within limited spaces, the coupling effect, particularly for element spacing smaller than half of the wavelength, is the primary factor leading to the inflection point for the performance of holographic communications.

Sub-SQL electronic field sensing by simultaneously using quantum entanglements and squeezings

Quantum entanglement and quantum squeezing are two most typical approaches to beat the standard quantum limit (SQL) of the sensitive phase estimations in quantum metrology. Each of them has already been utilized individually to improve the sensitivity of electric field sensing with the trapped ion platform, but the upper bound of the demonstrated sensitivity gain is very limited, i.e., the experimental 3dB and theoretical 6dB, over the SQL. Here, by simultaneously using the internal (spin)-external (oscillator) state entanglements and the oscillator squeezings to effectively amplify the accumulation phase, we show that these sensitivity gains can be effectively surpassed. Hopefully, the proposal provides a novel approach to the stronger beaten of the SQL for the sensitive sensings of the desired electric field and also the other metrologies.

Multi-wavelength temporal variability of the blazar PKS 1510-089

We perform correlation and periodicity search analyses on long-term multi-band light curves of the FSRQ 1510-089 observed by the space-based Fermi--Large Area Telescope in gamma-rays, the SMARTS and Steward Observatory telescopes in optical and near-infrared (NIR) and the 13.7 m radio telescope in Metsahovi Radio Observatory between 2008 and 2018. The z-transform discrete correlation function method is applied to study the correlation and possible time lags among these multi band light curves. Among all pairs of wavelengths, the gamma-ray vs. optical/NIR and optical vs. NIR correlations show zero time lags; however, both the gamma-ray and optical/NIR emissions precede the radio radiation. The Generalized Lomb-Scargle periodogram, Weighted Wavelet Z-transform, and REDFIT techniques are employed to investigate the unresolved-core-emission dominated 37 GHz light curve and yield evidence for a quasi-period around 1540 days, although given the length of the whole data set it cannot be claimed to be significant. We also investigate the optical/NIR color variability and find that this source shows a simple redder-when-brighter behavior over time, even in the low flux state.

The Lobster Eye Imager for Astronomy Onboard the SATech-01 Satellite

The Lobster Eye Imager for Astronomy (LEIA), a pathfinder of the Wide-field X-ray Telescope of the Einstein Probe (EP) mission, was successfully launched onboard the SATech-01 satellite of the Chinese Academy of Sciences on 27 July 2022. In this paper, we introduce the design and on-ground test results of the LEIA instrument. Using state-of-the-art Micro-Pore Optics (MPO), a wide field-of-view (FoV) of 346 square degrees (18.6 degrees * 18.6 degrees) of the X-ray imager is realized. An optical assembly composed of 36 MPO chips is used to focus incident X-ray photons, and four large-format complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) sensors, each of 6 cm * 6 cm, are used as the focal plane detectors. The instrument has an angular resolution of 4 - 8 arcmin (in FWHM) for the central focal spot of the point spread function, and an effective area of 2 - 3 cm2 at 1 keV in essentially all the directions within the field of view. The detection passband is 0.5 - 4 keV in the soft X-rays and the sensitivity is 2 - 3 * 10-11 erg s-1 cm-2 (about 1 mini-Crab) at 1,000 second observation. The total weight of LEIA is 56 kg and the power is 85 W. The satellite, with a design lifetime of 2 years, operates in a Sun-synchronous orbit of 500 km with an orbital period of 95 minutes. LEIA is paving the way for future missions by verifying in flight the technologies of both novel focusing imaging optics and CMOS sensors for X-ray observation, and by optimizing the working setups of the instrumental parameters. In addition, LEIA is able to carry out scientific observations to find new transients and to monitor known sources in the soft X-ray band, albeit limited useful observing time available.

Characterisation of Corrosion Damage in T91/F91 steel exposed to Liquid Lead-Bismuth Eutectic

T91 samples were exposed to static liquid lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) at 700°C for 250-500 hours in either an oxidising or reducing environment. Corrosion damage was characterised using electron microscopy techniques, which identified networks of LBE intrusion beneath LBE-wetted surfaces. Under reducing conditions these networks are uniformly distributed, while they appear patchier and deeper under oxidising conditions. The individual intrusions preferentially follow microstructural features, initially along prior-austenite grain boundaries, followed by penetration down martensite lath boundaries. Local depletion of Cr was observed within 4 μm of the intrusions and along intersecting boundaries, suggesting local Cr dissolution as the main corrosion mechanism.

First wide field-of-view X-ray observations by a lobster eye focusing telescope in orbit

As a novel X-ray focusing technology, lobster eye micro-pore optics (MPO) feature both a wide observing field of view and true imaging capability, promising sky monitoring with significantly improved sensitivity and spatial resolution in soft X-rays. Since first proposed by Angel (1979), the optics have been extensively studied, developed and trialed over the past decades. In this Letter, we report on the first-light results from a flight experiment of the Lobster Eye Imager for Astronomy ($LEIA$), a pathfinder of the wide-field X-ray telescope of the Einstein Probe mission. The piggyback imager, launched in July 2022, has a mostly un-vignetted field of view of $18.6^\circ \times 18.6^\circ $. Its spatial resolution is in the range of 4$-$7 arcmin in FWHM and the focal spot effective area is 2$-$3 cm$^2$, both showing only mild fluctuations across the field of view. We present images of the Galactic center region, Sco X-1 and the diffuse Cygnus Loop nebular taken in snapshot observations over 0.5$-$4 keV. These are truly wide-field X-ray images of celestial bodies observed, for the first time, by a focusing imaging telescope. Initial analyses of the in-flight data show excellent agreement between the observed images and the on-ground calibration and simulations. The instrument and its characterization are briefly described, as well as the flight experiment. The results provide a solid basis for the development of the present and proposed wide-field X-ray missions using lobster eye MPO.

$Bρ$-defined isochronous mass spectrometry: a new approach for high-precision mass measurements of short-lived nuclei

A novel technique for broadband high-precision mass measurements of short-lived exotic nuclides is reported. It is based on the isochronous mass spectrometry (IMS) and realizes simultaneous determinations of revolution time and velocity of short-lived stored ions at the cooler storage ring CSRe in Lanzhou. The new technique, named as the $Bρ$-defined IMS or $Bρ$-IMS, boosts the efficiency, sensitivity, and accuracy of mass measurements, and is applied here to measure masses of neutron-deficient $fp$-shell nuclides. In a single accelerator setting, masses of $^{46}$Cr, $^{50}$Fe and $^{54}$Ni are determined with relative uncertainties of (5~-~6)$\times10^{-8}$, thereby improving the input data for testing the unitarity of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark mixing matrix. This is the technique of choice for future high-precision measurements of the most rarely produced shortest-lived nuclides.

$Bρ$-defined Isochronous Mass Spectrometry and Mass Measurements of $^{58}$Ni Fragments

A novel isochronous mass spectrometry, termed as $Bρ$-defined IMS, is established at the experimental cooler-storage ring CSRe in Lanzhou. Its potential has been studied through high precision mass measurements of $^{58}$Ni projectile fragments. Two time-of-flight detectors were installed in one of the straight sections of CSRe, thus enabling simultaneous measurements of the velocity and the revolution time of each stored short-lived ion. This allows for calculating the magnetic rigidity $Bρ$ and the orbit length $C$ of each ion. The accurate $Bρ(C)$ function has been constructed, which is a universal calibration curve used to deduce the masses of the stored nuclides. The sensitivity to single stored ions, quickness, and background-free characteristics of the method are ideally suited to address nuclides with very short lifetimes and tiniest production yields. In the limiting case of just a single particle, the attained mass resolving power allows one us to determine its mass-over-charge ratio $m/q$ with a remarkable precision of merely $\sim5$ keV. Masses of $T_z = -3/2$ fp-shell nuclides are re-determined with high accuracy, and the validity of the isospin multiplet mass equation is tested up to the heaviest isospin quartet with $A = 55$. The new masses are also used to investigate the mirror symmetry of empirical residual proton-neutron interactions.

Electric Current Induced by Microwave Stark Effect of Electrons on Liquid Helium

We propose a frequency-mixed effect of Terahertz (THz) and Gigahertz (GHz) electromagnetic waves in the cryogenic system of electrons floating on liquid helium surface. The THz wave is near-resonant with the transition frequency between the lowest two levels of surface state electrons. The GHz wave does not excite the transitions but generates a GHz-varying Stark effect with the symmetry-breaking eigenstates of electrons on liquid helium. We show an effective coupling between the inputting THz and GHz waves, which appears at the critical point that the detuning between electrons and THz wave is equal to the frequency of GHz wave. By this coupling, the THz and GHz waves cooperatively excite electrons and generate the low-frequency ac currents along the perpendicular direction of liquid helium surface to be experimentally detected by the image-charge approach [Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 086801 (2019)]. This offers an alternative approach for THz detections.

Sensitive detection of local magnetic field changes with atomic interferometry by using superconducting Meissner effects

Sensitive detection of magnetic field is one of the open problem in metrology. Here, we propose an Mach-Zehnder atomic interferometry to sensitively detect the very weak local magnetic field, which is expelled by the superconductor (as the "testing magnet") due to the Meissner effect. The induced magnetic field gradient near the superconductor provides a centripetal acceleration of the atomic motion in the interferometry and thus can be detected by using the atomic interferences. Given gravity acceleration of the atoms have been measured at the accuracy of $10^{-12}$ g, the measured sensitivity of the expelled local field could reach $10^{-14}$ T.

Investigation of two-photon 2s -> 1s decay in one-electron and one-muon ions

We have studied the radiative decay of the 2s state of one-electron and one-muon ions, where the two-photon mechanism plays an important role. Due to the nuclear size corrections the radiative decay of the 2s state in the electron and muon ions is qualitatively different. Based on the accurate relativistic calculation, we introduced a two-parameter approximation, which makes it possible to describe the two-photon angular-differential transition probability for the polarized emitted photons with high accuracy. The emission of photons with linear and circular polarizations was studied separately. We also investigated the transition probabilities for the polarized initial and final states. The investigation was performed for ions with atomic numbers 1 < Z < 120.

The young HD 73583 (TOI-560) planetary system: Two 10-M$_\oplus$ mini-Neptunes transiting a 500-Myr-old, bright, and active K dwarf

We present the discovery and characterisation of two transiting planets observed by \textit{TESS} in the light curves of the young and bright (V=9.67) star HD73583 (TOI-560). We perform an intensive spectroscopic and photometric space- and ground-based follow-up in order to confirm and characterise the system. We found that HD73583 is a young ($\sim 500$~Myr) active star with a rotational period of $12.08 \pm 0.11 $\,d, and a mass and radius of $ 0.73 \pm 0.02 M_\odot$ and $0.65 \pm 0.02 R_\odot$, respectively. HD73583 b ($P_b=6.3980420 _{ - 0.0000062 }^{+0.0000067}$ d) has a mass and radius of $10.2 _{-3.1}^{+3.4} M_\oplus$ and$2.79 \pm 0.10 R_\oplus$, respectively, that gives a density of $2.58 _{-0.81}^{ 0.95} {\rm g\,cm^{-3}}$. HD73583 c ($P_c= 18.87974 _{-0.00074 }^{+0.00086}$) has a mass and radius of $9.7_{-1.7} ^ {+1.8} M_\oplus$ and $2.39_{-0.09}^{+0.10} R_\oplus$, respectively, this translates to a density of $3.88 _{-0.80}^{+0.91} {\rm g\,cm^{-3}}$. Both planets are consistent with worlds made of a solid core surrounded by a volatile envelope. Because of their youth and host star brightness, they both are excellent candidates to perform transmission spectroscopy studies. We expect ongoing atmospheric mass-loss for both planets caused by stellar irradiation. We estimate that the detection of evaporating signatures on H and He would be challenging, but doable with present and future instruments.

Role of the companion lensing galaxy in the CLASS gravitational lens B1152+199

We reinvestigate the Cosmic Lens All-Sky Survey (CLASS) gravitational lens B1152+199 using archived Hubble Space Telescope (HST) data and Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) data. A consistent luminosity ratio within effective radius between the host galaxy and the X-galaxy is measured from HST tri-band images, which leads to a mass ratio between the two galaxies as $r_b\sim 2$. To determine the role of the X-galaxy in the lens system, we modelled the dual-lens system with constraints from the VLBI-resolved jet components and the HST images. The 8.4-GHz global-VLBI data currently provide the most stringent constraints to the mass model, especially to the radial power-law slope. The optimized models for this two-image three-component radio lens favour a steeper-than-isothermal inner slope. The jet bending in image B was also investigated and it turned out to be rather a misalignment than a curvature. The goodness of fit indicates that the role of the X-galaxy is crucial in the lens system if three pairs of resolved jet components are to be fitted. When we imported the optimal model from radio constraints to optical modelling with the HST tri-band data, the optimization kept the consistency of the optimal model and successfully reproduced the features observed in the HST images. This implies that the diffuse emission discovered in the HST images is actually a detection of the secondary lensing effects from the companion lens.

Revealing new high redshift quasar populations through Gaussian mixture model selection

We present a novel method to identify candidate high redshift quasars (HzQs; ($z\gtrsim5.5$), which are unique probes of supermassive black hole growth in the early Universe, from large area optical/infrared photometric surveys. Using Gaussian Mixture Models to construct likelihoods and incorporate informed priors based on population statistics, our method uses a Bayesian framework to assign posterior probabilities that differentiate between HzQs and contaminating sources. We additionally include deep radio data to obtain informed priors. Using existing HzQ data in the literature, we set a posterior threshold that accepts ${\sim}90\%$ of known HzQs while rejecting $>99\%$ of contaminants such as dwarf stars or lower redshift galaxies. Running the probability selection on test samples of simulated HzQs and contaminants, we find that the efficacy of the probability method is higher than traditional colour cuts, decreasing the fraction of accepted contaminants by 86% while retaining a similar fraction of HzQs. As a test, we apply our method to the Pan-STARRS Data Release 1 (PS1) source catalogue within the HETDEX Spring field area on the sky, covering 400 sq. deg. and coinciding with deep radio data from the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey Data Release 1 (LoTSS DR1). From an initial sample of ${\sim}5\times10^5$ sources in PS1, our selection shortlists 251 candidate HzQs, which are further reduced to 63 after visual inspection. Shallow spectroscopic follow-up of 13 high probability HzQs resulted in the confirmation of a previously undiscovered quasar at $z=5.66$ with photometric colours $i-z = 1.4$, lying outside the typically probed regions when selecting HzQs based on colours. This discovery demonstrates the efficacy of our probabilistic HzQ selection method in selecting more complete HzQ samples, which holds promise when employed on large existing and upcoming photometric data sets.
