Magnetic ordering induced by interladder coupling in the spin-1/2 Heisenberg two-leg ladder antiferromagnet C$_9$H$_{18}$N$_2$CuBr$_4$

We present specific-heat and neutron-scattering results for the \emph{S}=1/2 quantum antiferromagnet (dimethylammonium)(3,5-dimethylpyridinium)CuBr$_4$. The material orders magnetically at \emph{T}$_N$=1.99(2)\,K, and magnetic excitations are accompanied by an energy gap of 0.30(2) meV due to spin anisotropy. The system is best described as coupled two-leg spin-1/2 ladders with the leg exchange $J_{\rm leg}$=0.60(2)~meV, rung exchange $J_{\rm rung}$=0.64(9)~meV, interladder exchange $J_{\rm int}$=0.19(2)~meV, and an interaction-anisotropy parameter $λ$=0.93(2), according to inelastic neutron-scattering measurements. In contrast to most spin ladders reported to date, the material is a rare example in which the interladder coupling is very near the critical value required to drive the system to a Néel-ordered phase without an assistance of a magnetic field.

GSH 90-28-17: a Possible Old Supernova Remnant

GSH 90-28-17 is a high-latitude galactic HI supershell, identified in the HI supershell catalogs with a velocity of $v_{lsr}\sim-17$ \kms. We used the new Arecibo GALFA-HI survey data which have much higher resolution and sensitivity than what were previously available to re-examine the properties of the supershell. We derived a new distance of 400 pc for GSH 90-28-17 and suggested that it is related to the Lac OB1 association. The radius of GSH 90-28-17 is 66.0$\pm$3.5 pc. The HI mass of the shell is (3.1$\pm0.1)\times10^{4}$ M$_{\odot}$. It has an age of $\sim4.5$ Myr and a total kinetic energy of (8.2$\pm0.3)\times10^{48}$ ergs. We extracted radio continuum data for the GSH 90-28-17 region from the 408 MHz all-sky Survey and Bonn 1420 MHz survey, and filtered the diffuse background Galactic emission. A radio loop-like ridge is found to be associated with the HI shell at both frequencies, and shows a nonthermal origin with a TT-plot index of $α$=-1.35$\pm$0.69. In addition, the pulsar J2307+2225 with a similar distance is found in the shell region. We conclude that GSH 90-28-17 is probably an old, type II supernova remnant in the solar neighborhood.

The James Clerk Maxwell Telescope Nearby Galaxies Legacy Survey IX: $^{12}$CO $J=3\to2$ Observations of NGC 2976 and NGC 3351

We present $^{12}$CO \textit{J=3$\rightarrow$2} maps of NGC 2976 and NGC 3351 obtained with the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT), both early targets of the JCMT Nearby Galaxy Legacy Survey (NGLS). We combine the present observations with $^{12}$CO \textit{J=1$\rightarrow$0} data and find that the computed $^{12}$CO \textit{J=3$\rightarrow$2} to $^{12}$CO \textit{J=1$\rightarrow$0} line ratio ($R_{31}$) agrees with values measured in other NGLS field galaxies. We compute the M$_{\rm{H_2}}$ value and find that it is robust against the value of $R_{31}$ used. Using \textsc{Hi} data from the The \textsc{Hi} Nearby Galaxy Survey (THINGS) survey, we find a tight correlation between surface density of H$_2$ and star formation rate density for NGC 3351 when $^{12}$CO \textit{J=3$\rightarrow$2} data are used. Finally, we compare the $^{12}$CO \textit{J=3$\rightarrow$2} intensity with the PAH 8 $μ$m surface brightness and find a good correlation in the high surface brightness regions. We extend this study to include all 25 \textit{Spitzer} Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS) galaxies within the NGLS sample and find a tight correlation at large spatial scales. We suggest that both PAH 8 $μ$m and $^{12}$CO \textit{J=3$\rightarrow$2} are likely to originate in regions of active star formation.

Structural and magnetic properties in the quantum S=1/2 dimer systems Ba3(Cr1-xVx)2O8 with site disorder

We report a comprehensive study of dc susceptibility, specific heat, neutron diffraction, and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on polycrystalline Ba3(Cr1-xVx)2O8 samples, where x=0, 0.06, 0.15, and 0.53. A Jahn-Teller structure transition occurs for x=0, 0.06, and 0.15 samples and the transition temperature is reduced upon vanadium substitution from 70(2) K at x=0 to 60(2) K at x=0.06 and 0.15. The structure becomes less distorted as x increases and such transition disappears at x=0.53. The observed magnetic excitation spectrum indicates that the singlet ground state remains unaltered and spin gap energy Δ=1.3(1) meV is identical within the instrument resolution for all x. In addition, the dispersion bandwidth W decreases with increase of x. At x=0.53, W is reduced to 1.4(1) meV from 2.0(1) meV at x=0.

Properties of the UCHII region G25.4NW and its associated molecular cloud

UCHII G25.4NW is a bright IR source in the inner Galaxy region. New HI images from the VLA Galactic Plane Survey (VGPS) show clear absorption features associated with the UCHII region up to 95 km s$^{-1}$, and there is not any other absorptions up to the tangential velocity. It reveals that G25.4NW is at a near-side distance of 5.7 kpc, and it is located in the inner Galactic molecular ring region. Using the new distance, the bolometric luminosity of G25.4NW is estimated as $10^{5.6} L_{\odot}$, which corresponds to an O6 star. It contains 460 $M_{\odot}$ of ionized gas. High-resolution $^{13}$CO image from the Galactic Ring Survey (GRS) reveals that G25.4NW is part of a more extended star-formation complex with about $10^{4} M_{\odot}$ molecular gas.

Radio perspectives on the Monoceros SNR G205.5+0.5

The Monoceros Loop (SNR G205.5+0.5) is a large shell-type supernova remnant located in the Rosette Complex region. It was suggested to be interacting with the Rosette Nebula. We aim to re-examine the radio spectral index and its spatial variation over the Monoceros SNR, and study its properties of evolution within the complex interstellar medium. We extracted radio continuum data for the Monoceros complex region from the Effelsberg 21 cm and 11 cm surveys and the Urumqi 6 cm polarization survey. We used the new Arecibo GALFA-HI survey data with much higher resolution and sensitivity than that previously available to identify the HI shell related with the SNR. Multi-wavelengths data are included to investigate the properties of the SNR. The spectral index $α$ ($S_ν\proptoν^α$) averaged over the SNR is $-0.41 \pm$0.16. The TT-plots and the distribution of $α$ over the SNR show spatial variations which steepen towards the inner western filamentary shell. Polarized emission is prominent on the western filamentary shell region. The RM there is estimated to be about 30$\pm$77n rad m$^{-2}$, where the n=1 solution is preferred, and the magnetic field has a strength of about 9.5 $μ$G. From the HI channel maps, further evidence is provided for an interaction between the Monoceros SNR and the Rosette Nebula. We identify partial neutral hydrogen shell structures in the northwestern region at LSR velocities of +15 km s$^{-1}$ circumscribing the continuum emission. The HI shell has swept up a mass of about 4000 M$_{\odot}$ for a distance of 1.6 kpc. The western HI shell, well associated with the dust mission, is found to lie outside of the radio shell. We suggest that the Monoceros SNR is evolving within a cavity blown-out by the progenitor, and has triggered part of the star formation in the Rosette Nebula.

The JCMT Nearby Galaxies Legacy Survey VIII. CO data and the L(CO3-2)-L(FIR) correlation in the SINGS sample

The James Clerk Maxwell Telescope Nearby Galaxies Legacy Survey (NGLS) comprises an HI-selected sample of 155 galaxies spanning all morphological types with distances less than 25 Mpc. We describe the scientific goals of the survey, the sample selection, and the observing strategy. We also present an atlas and analysis of the CO J=3-2 maps for the 47 galaxies in the NGLS which are also part of the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey. We find a wide range of molecular gas mass fractions in the galaxies in this sample and explore the correlation of the far-infrared luminosity, which traces star formation, with the CO luminosity, which traces the molecular gas mass. By comparing the NGLS data with merging galaxies at low and high redshift which have also been observed in the CO J=3-2 line, we show that the correlation of far-infrared and CO luminosity shows a significant trend with luminosity. This trend is consistent with a molecular gas depletion time which is more than an order of magnitude faster in the merger galaxies than in nearby normal galaxies. We also find a strong correlation of the L(FIR)/L(CO3-2) ratio with the atomic to molecular gas mass ratio. This correlation suggests that some of the far-infrared emission originates from dust associated with atomic gas and that its contribution is particularly important in galaxies where most of the gas is in the atomic phase.

The JCMT Nearby Galaxies Legacy Survey IV. Velocity Dispersions in the Molecular Interstellar Medium in Spiral Galaxies

An analysis of large-area CO J=3-2 maps from the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope for 12 nearby spiral galaxies reveals low velocity dispersions in the molecular component of the interstellar medium. The three lowest luminosity galaxies show a relatively flat velocity dispersion as a function of radius while the remaining nine galaxies show a central peak with a radial fall-off within 0.2-0.4 r(25). Correcting for the average contribution due to the internal velocitydispersions of a population of giant molecular clouds, the average cloud-cloud velocity dispersion across the galactic disks is 6.1 +/- 1.0 km/s (standard deviation 2.9 km/s), in reasonable agreement with previous measurements for the Galaxy andM33. The cloud-cloud velocity dispersion derived from the CO data is on average two times smaller than the HI velocity dispersion measured in the same galaxies. The low cloud-cloudvelocity dispersion implies that the molecular gas is the critical component determining the stability of the galactic disk against gravitational collapse, especially in those regions of the disk which are H2 dominated. The cloud-cloud velocity dispersion shows a significant positivecorrelation with both the far-infrared luminosity, which traces the star formation activity, and the K-band absolute magnitude, which traces the total stellar mass. For three galaxies in the Virgo cluster, smoothing the data to a resolution of 4.5 kpc (to match the typical resolution of high redshift CO observations) increases the measured velocity dispersion by roughly a factor of two, comparable to the dispersion measured recently in a normal galaxy at z=1. This comparison suggests that the mass and star formation rate surface densities may be similar in galaxies from z=0-1 and that the high star formation rates seen at z=1 may be partly due to the presence of physically larger molecular gas disks.

The JCMT Nearby Galaxies Legacy Survey II: Warm Molecular Gas and Star Formation in Three Field Spiral Galaxies

We present the results of large-area CO J=3-2 emission mapping of three nearby field galaxies, NGC 628, NGC 3521, and NGC 3627, completed at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope as part of the Nearby Galaxies Legacy Survey. These galaxies all have moderate to strong CO J=3-2 detections over large areas of the fields observed by the survey, showing resolved structure and dynamics in their warm/dense molecular gas disks. All three galaxies were part of the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey sample, and as such have excellent published multi-wavelength ancillary data. These data sets allow us to examine the star formation properties, gas content, and dynamics of these galaxies on sub-kiloparsec scales. We find that the global gas depletion times for dense/warm molecular gas in these galaxies is consistent with other results for nearby spiral galaxies, indicating this may be independent of galaxy properties such as structures, gas compositions, and environments. Similar to the results from the THINGS HI survey, we do not see a correlation of the star formation efficiency with the gas surface density consistent with the Schmidt-Kennicutt law. Finally, we find that the star formation efficiency of the dense molecular gas traced by CO J=3-2 is potentially flat or slightly declining as a function of molecular gas density, the CO J=3-2/J=1-0 ratio (in contrast to the correlation found in a previous study into the starburst galaxy M83), and the fraction of total gas in molecular form.

The JCMT Nearby Galaxies Legacy Survey III: Comparisons of cold dust, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, molecular gas, and atomic gas in NGC 2403

We used 3.6, 8.0, 70, 160 micron Spitzer Space Telescope data, James Clerk Maxwell Telescope HARP-B CO J=(3-2) data, National Radio Astronomy Observatory 12 meter telescope CO J=(1-0) data, and Very Large Array HI data to investigate the relations among PAHs, cold (~20 K) dust, molecular gas, and atomic gas within NGC 2403, an SABcd galaxy at a distance of 3.13 Mpc. The dust surface density is mainly a function of the total (atomic and molecular) gas surface density and galactocentric radius. The gas-to-dust ratio monotonically increases with radius, varying from ~100 in the nucleus to ~400 at 5.5 kpc. The slope of the gas-to-dust ratio is close to that of the oxygen abundance, suggesting that metallicity strongly affects the gas-to-dust ratio within this galaxy. The exponential scale length of the radial profile for the CO J=(3-2) emission is statistically identical to the scale length for the stellar continuum-subtracted 8 micron (PAH 8 micron) emission. However, CO J=(3-2) and PAH 8 micron surface brightnesses appear uncorrelated when examining sub-kpc sized regions.

Interlayer and interfacial exchange coupling in ferromagnetic metal/semiconductor heterostructures

We describe a systematic study of the exchange coupling between a magnetically hard metallic ferromagnet (MnAs) and a magnetically soft ferromagnetic semiconductor (GaMnAs) in bilayer and trilayer heterostructures. An exchange spring model of MnAs/GaMnAs bilayers accounts for the variation of the exchange bias field with layer thickness and composition. We also present evidence for hole-mediated interlayer exchange coupling in MnAs/p-GaAs/\GaMnAs trilayers and study the dependence of the exchange bias field on the thickness of the spacer layer.

The JCMT Nearby Galaxies Legacy Survey I. Star Forming Molecular Gas in Virgo Cluster Spiral Galaxies

We present large-area maps of the CO J=3-2 emission obtained at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope for four spiral galaxies in the Virgo Cluster. We combine these data with published CO J=1-0, 24 micron, and Halpha images to measure the CO line ratios, molecular gas masses, and instantaneous gas depletion times. For three galaxies in our sample (NGC 4254, NGC4321, and NGC 4569), we obtain molecular gas masses of 7E8-3E9 Msun and disk-averaged instantaneous gas depletion times of 1.1-1.7 Gyr. We argue that the CO J=3-2 line is a better tracer of the dense star forming molecular gas than the CO J=1-0 line, as it shows a better correlation with the star formation rate surface density both within and between galaxies. NGC 4254 appears to have a larger star formation efficiency(smaller gas depletion time), perhaps because it is on its first passage through the Virgo Cluster. NGC 4569 shows a large-scale gradient in the gas properties traced by the CO J=3-2/J=1-0 line ratio, which suggests that its interaction with the intracluster medium is affecting the dense star-forming portion of the interstellar medium directly. The fourth galaxy in our sample, NGC 4579, has weak CO J=3-2 emission despite having bright 24 micron emission; however, much of the central luminosity in this galaxy may be due to the presence of a central AGN.

Quasi-reversible Magnetoresistance in Exchange Spring Tunnel Junctions

We report a large, quasi-reversible tunnel magnetoresistance in exchange-biased ferromagnetic semiconductor tunnel junctions wherein a soft ferromagnetic semiconductor (\gma) is exchange coupled to a hard ferromagnetic metal (MnAs). Our observations are consistent with the formation of a region of inhomogeneous magnetization (an "exchange spring") within the biased \gma layer. The distinctive tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance of \gma produces a pronounced sensitivity of the magnetoresistance to the state of the exchange spring.

Spin Valve Effect in Self-exchange Biased Ferromagnetic Metal/Semiconductor Bilayers

We report magnetization and magetoresistance measurements in hybrid ferromagnetic metal/semiconductor heterostructures comprised of MnAs/(Ga,Mn)As bilayers. Our measurements show that the (metallic) MnAs and (semiconducting) (Ga,Mn)As layers are exchange coupled, re- sulting in an exchange biasing of the magnetically softer (Ga,Mn)As layer that weakens with layer thickness. Magnetoresistance measurements in the current-perpendicular-to-the-plane geometry show a spin valve effect in these self-exchange biased bilayers. Similar measurements in MnAs/p- GaAs/(Ga,Mn)As trilayers show that the exchange coupling diminishes with spatial separation between the layers.

Random telegraph noise from magnetic nanoclusters in the ferromagnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As

Measurements of the low frequency electrical noise in the ferromagnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As reveal an enhanced integrated noise at low temperature. For moderate localization, we find a 1/f normalized power spectrum density over the entire range of temperatures studied (4.2K < T < 70K). However, for stronger localization and a high density of Mn interstitials, we observe Lorentzian noise spectra accompanied by random telegraph noise. Magnetic field dependence and annealing studies suggest that interstitial Mn defects couple with substitutional Mn atoms to form nanoscale magnetic clusters characterized by a net moment of about 20 Bohr magnetons whose fluctuations modulate hole transport.

An Unbiased Survey of 500 Nearby Stars for Debris Disks: A JCMT Legacy Program

We present the scientific motivation and observing plan for an upcoming detection survey for debris disks using the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. The SCUBA-2 Unbiased Nearby Stars (SUNS) Survey will observe 500 nearby main sequence and sub-giant stars (100 of each of the A, F, G, K and M spectral classes) to the 850 micron extragalactic confusion limit to search for evidence of submillimeter excess, an indication of circumstellar material. The survey distance boundaries are 8.6, 16.5, 22, 25 and 45 pc for M, K, G, F and A stars, respectively, and all targets lie between the declinations of -40 deg to 80 deg. In this survey, no star will be rejected based on its inherent properties: binarity, presence of planetary companions, spectral type or age. This will be the first unbiased survey for debris disks since IRAS. We expect to detect ~125 debris disks, including ~50 cold disks not detectable in current shorter wavelength surveys. A substantial amount of complementary data will be required to constrain the temperatures and masses of discovered disks. High resolution studies will likely be required to resolve many of the disks. Therefore, these systems will be the focus of future observational studies using a variety of observatories to characterize their physical properties. For non-detected systems, this survey will set constraints (upper limits) on the amount of circumstellar dust, of typically 200 times the Kuiper Belt mass, but as low as 10 times the Kuiper Belt mass for the nearest stars in the sample (approximately 2 pc).

The James Clerk Maxwell Telescope Legacy Survey of Nearby Star-forming Regions in the Gould Belt

This paper describes a James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) legacy survey that has been awarded roughly 500 hrs of observing time to be carried out from 2007 to 2009. In this survey we will map with SCUBA-2 (Submillimetre Common User Bolometer Array 2) almost all of the well-known low-mass and intermediate-mass star-forming regions within 0.5 kpc that are accessible from the JCMT. Most of these locations are associated with the Gould Belt. From these observations we will produce a flux-limited snapshot of star formation near the Sun, providing a legacy of images, as well as point-source and extended-source catalogues, over almost 700 square degrees of sky. The resulting images will yield the first catalogue of prestellar and protostellar sources selected by submillimetre continuum emission, and should increase the number of known sources by more than an order of magnitude. We will also obtain CO maps with the array receiver HARP (Heterodyne Array Receiver Programme), in three CO isotopologues, of a large typical sample of prestellar and protostellar sources. We will then map the brightest hundred sources with the SCUBA-2 polarimeter (POL-2), producing the first statistically significant set of polarization maps in the submillimetre. The images and source catalogues will be a powerful reference set for astronomers, providing a detailed legacy archive for future telescopes, including ALMA, Herschel and JWST.

Non-collinear Spin Valve Effect in Ferromagnetic Semiconductor Trilayers

We report the observation of the spin valve effect in (Ga,Mn)As/p-GaAs/(Ga,Mn)As trilayer devices. Magnetoresistance measurements carried out in the current in plane geometry reveal positive magnetoresistance peaks when the two ferromagnetic layers are magnetized orthogonal to each other. Measurements carried out for different post-growth annealing conditions and spacer layer thickness suggest that the positive magnetoresistance peaks originate in a noncollinear spin valve effect due to spin-dependent scattering that is believed to occur primarily at interfaces.
