The Minimal Extension of the SM and the Neutrino Oscillation Data

We study the simplest Standard Model estension with only one extra right-handed neutrino. In this case there are two massless $m_{1,2}$ and two massive $m_{3,4}$ neutrinos, and in principle both solar and atmospheric anomalies can be described in two different scenarios, $m_3 << m_4$ (scheme I) and $m_3 \simeq m_4$ (scheme II). However, neither bi-maximal mixing nor the dark matter problem are explained in this minimal extension. Only scheme II can accommodate simultaneously maximal mixing for atmospheric neutrinos and the small mixing angle MSW solution for the solar anomaly. This scenario can be tested in the BOREXINO experiment.

Quantization and renormalization of the manifest left-right symmetric model of electroweak interactions

Quantization and renormalization of the left-right symmetric model is the main purpose of the paper. First the model at tree level with a Higgs sector containing one bidoublet and two triplets is precisely discussed. Then the canonical quantization and Faddeev-Popov Lagrangian are carried out ('t Hooft gauge). The BRST symmetry is discussed. Subsequently the on mass shell renormalization is performed and, as a test of consistency, the renormalization of the ZNiNj vertex is analyzed.

Nature of neutrinos in the light of present and future experiments

Two general models with hierarchical and almost degenerate neutrino masses, which are able to explain the solar and atmospheric anomalies are investigated. We show how neutrinoless double beta decay experiments discern Dirac and Majorana natures of neutrinos. The strongest result is, that almost degenerate neutrinos with masses above 0.22 eV combined with the SMA MSW must be Dirac particles. In the general case, the same bound is true for specific parity assignments. In the near future (GENIUS experiment), one of the hierarchical schemes, and the VO mechanism for almost degenerate neutrinos and specific mixing matrix elements and parity assignments will be tested.

Confronting electroweak precision measurements with New Physics models

Precision experiments, such as those performed at LEP and SLC, offer us an excellent opportunity to constrain extended gauge model parameters. To this end, it is often assumed, that in order to obtain more reliable estimates, one should include the sizable one--loop Standard Model (SM) corrections, which modify the $Z^0$ couplings as well as other observables. This conviction is based on the belief that the higher order contributions from the ``extension sector'' will be numerically small. However, the structure of higher order corrections can be quite different when comparing the SM with its extension, thus one should avoid assumptions which do not care about such facts. This is the case for all models with $ρ_{\rm tree} \equiv M_W^2/(M_{Z}^2\cos^2{Θ_W}) \neq 1$. As an example, both the manifest left-right symmetric model and the $SU(2)_L \otimes U(1)_Y \otimes \tilde{U}(1)$ model, with an additional $Z'$ boson, are discussed and special attention to the top contribution to $Δρ$ is given. We conclude that the only sensible way to confront a model with the experimental data is to renormalize it self-consistently, if not, parameters which depend strongly on quantum effects should be left free in fits, though essential physics is lost in this way. We should note that arguments given here allow us to state that at the level of loop corrections (indirect effects) there is nothing like a ``model independent global analysis'' of the data.

Left-right symmetry and heavy particle quantum effects

We have renormalized a classical left-right model with a bidoublet, and left and right triplets in the Higgs sector. We focus on oblique corrections and show the interplay between the top quark, heavy neutrinos and Higgses contribution to the muon $Δr$ parameter. In the SM, custodial symmetry prevents large oblique corrections to appear. Although in LR models there is no such symmetry to make vanish the quadratically diverging terms, we have shown, that heavy Higgses contributions to $Δr$ are under control. Also the top contribution to $Δr$, quite different from that in the SM, is discussed. However, heavy neutrinos seem to give the most important contributions. From oblique corrections, they can be as large as the SM top one. Moreover, vertex and box diagrams give additional non-decoupling effects and only concrete numerical estimates are able to answer whether the model is still self-consistent.

Low energy physics and left-right symmetry. Bounds on the model parameters

In any gauge model with spontaneous symmetry breakdown the gauge boson masses and their mixings are not independent quantities. They are interconnected through the vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of the Higgs sector. We discuss the low-energy experiments, namely electron-hadron, neutrino-hadron and neutrino-electron processes in the frame of the Manifest Left-Right Symmetric model and show the impact of these dependencies on the possible heavy gauge boson masses and mixings. At 90 % C.L., we obtain $M_{Z_2} \geq 1475$ GeV for phenomenologically favorable models, without $W_L-W_R$ mixing and $M_{Z_2} \geq 1205$ GeV in the other extreme case when a maximal mixing is possible. If we consider the \lr parameters without any constraints from the Higgs sector these limits get down to 410 GeV. Bounds on the Z_2 mixing angle as well as the W_2 mass and its mixing angle are also given.

Majorana neutrino transition magnetic moments in left-right symmetric models

Transition magnetic moments of Majorana neutrinos are discussed in the frame of the most natural version of the LR model (with left- and right-handed triplets and a bidoublet in the Higgs sector). We show that their largest values could be at most $6\cdot 10^{-13} μ_B$ from diagrams with $W_L$ in the loop. This could happen for specific models where (i) neutrino-charged lepton mixing is maximal and (ii) $κ_1 \simeq κ_2$ (VEVs for neutral Higgs fields in the bidoublet $ϕ$ are equal). Contributions from diagrams with charged Higgses in the loop are smaller than those in the SM with right-handed neutrinos.

From kaons to neutrinos: quantum mechanics of particle oscillations

The problem of particle oscillation is considered in a pedagogical and comprehensive way. Examples from K, B and neutrino physics are given. Conceptual difficulties of the traditional approach to particle oscillation are discussed. It is shown how the probability current density and the wave packet treatments of particle oscillations resolve some problems. It is also shown that only full field theoretical approach is free from conceptual difficulties. The possibility of oscillation of particles produced together with kaons or neutrinos is considered in full wave packet quantum mechanics language. Precise definition of the oscillation of particles which recoil against mixed states is given. The general amplitude which describes the oscillation of two particles in the final states is found. Using this EPR-type amplitude the problem of oscillation of particles recoiling against kaons or neutrinos is resolved. The relativistic EPR correlations on distances of the order of coherence lengths are considered.

Influence of the left-handed part of the neutrino mass matrix on the lepton number violating e-e- -> W-W- process

Influence of the neutrino mass submatrix $M_L$ on the e-e- -> W-W- process is discussed. Taking into account various possible CP signatures of heavy neutrinos it is shown that, in some cases, nonzero $M_L$ substantially changes predictions for maximum possible values of the e-e- -> W-W- cross section. A direct role of the $ω^2$ parameter (coming from neutrinoless double beta decay) is clarified. The consequences of doubly charged Higgs particles $δ^{--}$ with resonances even far away from energies of the future linear lepton collider ($\sqrt{s}=0.5-1$ TeV) are studied.

On the Possibilities of Distinguishing Dirac from Majorana Neutrinos

The problem if existing neutrinos are Dirac or Majorana particles is considered in a very pedagogical way. After a few historical remarks we recall the theoretical description of neutral spin 1/2 particles, emphasizing the difference between chirality and helicity which is important in our discussion. Next we describe the properties of neutrinos in the cases when their interactions are given by the standard model and by its extensions (massive neutrinos, right-handed currents, electromagnetic neutrino interaction, interaction with scalar particles). Various processes where the different nature of neutrinos could in principle be visible are reviewed. We clear up misunderstandings which have appeared in last suggestions how to distinguish both types of neutrinos.

Heavy neutrino mixing and single production at Linear Collider

We study the single production of heavy neutrinos via the processes $e^-e^+ \to νN$ and $e^-γ\to W^- N$ at future linear colliders. As a base of our considerations we take a wide class of models, both with vanishing and non-vanishing left-handed Majorana neutrino mass matrix $m_L$. We perform a model independent analyses of the existing experimental data and find connections between the characteristic of heavy neutrinos (masses, mixings, CP eigenvalues) and the $m_L$ parameters. We show that with the present experimental constraints heavy neutrino masses almost up to the collision energy can be tested in the future experiments.

Heavy neutrinos production and decay in future $e^+e^-$ colliders

The production of heavy and light neutrinos in $e^+e^-$ future colliders is considered. The cross section for the process $e^+e^- \rightarrow νN$ and then the heavy neutrino decay $N \rightarrow W^{\pm} e^{\mp}$ is determined for experimentally possible values of mixing matrix elements. The bound on the heavy neutrino-electron mixing is estimated in models without right-handed currents. The role of neutrino CP eigenvalues and the mass of the lightest Higgs particle are investigated. The angular distribution of charged leptons in the total CM frame resulting from the heavy neutrino decay and from the main $W^+W^-$ production background process are briefly compared.

CP Phases in Models with Some Fermion Masses Vanishing and/or Degenerate

We count the number of CP breaking phases in models with $SU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y$ and $SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R\times U(1)_{B-L}$ electroweak gauge groups and extended matter contents with some fermion masses vanishing and/or degenerate. Quarks and leptons, including Majorana neutrinos, are treated in a similar way. CP violation is characterized in the mass-eigenstate and in the weak-eigenstate bases. Necessary and sufficient conditions for CP conservation, invariant under weak basis redefinitions are also studied in these models. CP violating factors entering in physical observables and only invariant under phase redefinitions are discussed.

Is there a chance to find heavy neutrinos in future linear colliders?

We examine two processes, the neutrino production process e^+e^- ---> Nνand the inverse neutrinoless double-beta decay process e^-e^- --->W^-W^- as possible places for discovering heavy neutrinos in future lepton linear colliders. The heavy neutrino parameters are bound from existing experimental data. We use only one important theoretical input, the lack of a Higgs triplet. As a consequence the neutrinos must have different CP parities. In such models the existing experimental bounds for mixing parameters still give a chance that heavy neutrinos can be observed in future e^+e^- and e^-e^- colliders.

On Possibility of Detecting the E-E- -> W-W- Process in the Standard Model

We examine the e-e- -> W-W- lepton number violating process in the frame of the Standard Model with additional right-handed neutrino singlets. We give results in the framework of the `see-saw' as well as other models, where there is no relation between neutrino masses and the mixing matrix elements. The cross section for the `see-saw' models is negligible because they predict in a natural way very small electron-heavy neutrino mixing angles. However, there exist other models, in which the electron-heavy neutrino mixing angles are free parameters and can be large. Taking into account the present experimental bounds on mixing angles the large cross section for the e-e- -> W-W- is still acceptable.

INVERSE NEUTRINOLESS DOUBLE-BETA DECAY IN GAUGE THEORIES WITH CP VIOLATION

We investigate the reactions $e^-e^- \rightarrow W_i^-W_j^-$ for various gauge bosons production processes in the frame of the standard model with additional right-handed neutrinos and the Left-Right symmetric model. The present bounds on the various model parameters are taken into account. The question of the cross section behaviour for large energy and the CP violation problems are discussed.

Higgs Boson Contributions to Neutrino Production in e-e+ Collisions in a Left-Right Symmetric Model

In gauge models with bigger number of Higgs particles their couplings to fermions are more complicated then in the standard model (SM). The influence of the Higgs bosons exchange on the neutrino production cross section in $e^-e^+$ collision ($e^-e^+ \rightarrow νN$) is investigated. The study has been done in the framework of the left-right symmetric model with the rich Higgs sector containing bidoublet and two triplets. The couplings of the Higgs particles even to light leptons can be as large as the gauge bosons couplings. The total effect of the Higgs bosons is small as a result of the big Higgs mass in the propagators.
