$E0$ transition strength in stable Ni isotopes

Excited states in $^{58,60,62}$Ni were populated via inelastic proton scattering at the Australian National University as well as via inelastic neutron scattering at the University of Kentucky Accelerator Laboratory. The Super-e electron spectrometer and the CAESAR Compton-suppressed HPGe array were used in complementary experiments to measure conversion coefficients and $δ(E2/M1)$ mixing ratios, respectively, for a number of $2^+ \rightarrow 2^+$ transitions. The data obtained were combined with lifetimes and branching ratios to determine $E0$, $M1$, and $E2$ transition strengths between $2^+$ states. The $E0$ transition strengths between $0^+$ states were measured using internal conversion electron spectroscopy and compare well to previous results from internal pair formation spectroscopy. The $E0$ transition strengths between the lowest-lying $2^+$ states were found to be consistently large for the isotopes studied.

Identification of significant $E0$ strength in the $2^+_2 \rightarrow 2^+_1$ transitions of $^{58, 60, 62}$Ni

The $E0$ transition strength in the $2^+_2 \rightarrow 2^+_1$ transitions of $^{58,60,62}$Ni have been determined for the first time following a series of measurements at the Australian National University (ANU) and the University of Kentucky (UK). The CAESAR Compton-suppressed HPGe array and the Super-e solenoid at ANU were used to measure the $δ(E2/M1)$ mixing ratio and internal conversion coefficient of each transition following inelastic proton scattering. Level half-lives, $δ(E2/M1)$ mixing ratios and $γ$-ray branching ratios were measured at UK following inelastic neutron scattering. The new spectroscopic information was used to determine the $E0$ strengths. These are the first $2^+ \rightarrow 2^+$ $E0$ transition strengths measured in nuclei with spherical ground states and the $E0$ component is found to be unexpectedly large; in fact, these are amongst the largest $E0$ transition strengths in medium and heavy nuclei reported to date.

LOFAR MSSS: The Scaling Relation between AGN Cavity Power and Radio Luminosity at Low Radio Frequencies

We present a new analysis of the widely used relation between cavity power and radio luminosity in clusters of galaxies with evidence for strong AGN feedback. We study the correlation at low radio frequencies using two new surveys - the First Alternative Data Release of the TIFR GMRT Sky Survey (TGSS ADR1) at 148 MHz and LOFAR's first all-sky survey, the Multifrequency Snapshot Sky Survey (MSSS) at 140 MHz. We find a scaling relation $P_{\rm cav} \propto L_{148}^β$, with a logarithmic slope of $β= 0.51 \pm 0.14$, which is in good agreement with previous results based on data at 327 MHz. The large scatter present in this correlation confirms the conclusion reached at higher frequencies that the total radio luminosity at a single frequency is a poor predictor of the total jet power. We show that including measurements at 148 MHz alone is insufficient to reliably compute the bolometric radio luminosity and reduce the scatter in the correlation. For a subset of four well-resolved sources, we examine the detected extended structures at low frequencies and compare with the morphology known from higher frequency images and Chandra X-ray maps. In Perseus we discuss details in the structures of the radio mini-halo, while in the 2A 0335+096 cluster we observe new diffuse emission associated with multiple X-ray cavities and likely originating from past activity. For A2199 and MS 0735.6+7421, we confirm that the observed low-frequency radio lobes are confined to the extents known from higher frequencies. This new low-frequency analysis highlights the fact that existing cavity power to radio luminosity relations are based on a relatively narrow range of AGN outburst ages. We discuss how the correlation could be extended using low frequency data from the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS) in combination with future, complementary deeper X-ray observations.

A property of algebraic univoque numbers

Consider the set $\uu$ of real numbers $q \ge 1$ for which only one sequence $(c_i)$ of integers $0 \le c_i \le q$ satisfies the equality $\sum_{i=1}^{\infty} c_i q^{-i} = 1$. In this note we show that the set of algebraic numbers in $\uu$ is dense in the closure $\uuu$ of $\uu$.

Invariant densities for random $β$-expansions

Let $β>1$ be a non-integer. We consider expansions of the form $\sum_{i=1}^{\infty} d_i β^{-i}$, where the digits $(d_i)_{i \geq 1}$ are generated by means of a Borel map $K_β$ defined on $\{0,1\}^{\N}\times [ 0, \lfloor β\rfloor /(β-1)]$. We show existence and uniqueness of an absolutely continuous $K_β$-invariant probability measure w.r.t. $m_p \otimes λ$, where $m_p$ is the Bernoulli measure on $\{0,1\}^{\N}$ with parameter $p$ $(0 < p < 1)$ and $λ$ is the normalized Lebesgue measure on $[0 ,\lfloor β\rfloor /(β-1)]$. Furthermore, this measure is of the form $m_p \otimes μ_{β,p}$, where $μ_{β,p}$ is equivalent with $λ$. We establish the fact that the measure of maximal entropy and $m_p \otimes λ$ are mutually singular. In case the number 1 has a finite greedy expansion with positive coefficients, the measure $m_p \otimes μ_{β,p}$ is Markov. In the last section we answer a question concerning the number of universal expansions, a notion introduced in [EK].
