Detecting a Structural Change in Functional Time Series Using Local Wilcoxon Statistic

Functional data analysis (FDA) is a part of modern multivariate statistics that analyses data providing information about curves, surfaces or anything else varying over a certain continuum. In economics and empirical finance we often have to deal with time series of functional data, where we cannot easily decide, whether they are to be considered as homogeneous or heterogeneous. At present a discussion on adequate tests of homogenity for functional data is carried. We propose a novel statistic for detetecting a structural change in functional time series based on a local Wilcoxon statistic induced by a local depth function proposed by Paindaveine and Van Bever (2013).

Modeling joint probability distribution of yield curve parameters

US Yield curve has recently collapsed to its most flattened level since subprime crisis and is close to the inversion. This fact has gathered attention of investors around the world and revived the discussion of proper modeling and forecasting yield curve, since changes in interest rate structure are believed to represent investors expectations about the future state of economy and have foreshadowed recessions in the United States. While changes in term structure of interest rates are relatively easy to interpret they are however very difficult to model and forecast due to no proper economic theory underlying such events. Yield curves are usually represented by multivariate sparse time series, at any point in time infinite dimensional curve is portrayed via relatively few points in a multivariate space of data and as a consequence multimodal statistical dependencies behind these curves are relatively hard to extract and forecast via typical multivariate statistical methods. We propose to model yield curves via reconstruction of joint probability distribution of parameters in functional space as a high degree polynomial. Thanks to adoption of an orthonormal basis, the MSE estimation of coefficients of a given function is an average over a data sample in the space of functions. Since such polynomial coefficients are independent and have cumulant-like interpretation ie.describe corresponding perturbation from an uniform joint distribution, our approach can also be extended to any d-dimensional space of yield curve parameters (also in neighboring times) due to controllable accuracy. We believe that this approach to modeling of local behavior of a sparse multivariate curved time series can complement prediction from standard models like ARIMA, that are using long range dependencies, but provide only inaccurate prediction of probability distribution, often as just Gaussian with constant width.

Generalized Exponential smoothing in prediction of hierarchical time series

Shang and Hyndman (2017) proposed a grouped functional time series forecasting approach as a combination of individual forecasts obtained using generalized least squares method. We modify their methodology using generalized exponential smoothing technique for the most disaggregated functional time series in order to obtain more robust predictor. We discuss some properties of our proposals basing on results obtained via simulation studies and analysis of real data related to a prediction of a demand for electricity in Australia in 2016.

On Geometric Ergodicity of Skewed - SVCHARME models

Markov Chain Monte Carlo is repeatedly used to analyze the properties of intractable distributions in a convenient way. In this paper we derive conditions for geometric ergodicity of a general class of nonparametric stochastic volatility models with skewness driven by hidden Markov Chain with switching.

A Random Matrix Approach to Dynamic Factors in macroeconomic data

We show how random matrix theory can be applied to develop new algorithms to extract dynamic factors from macroeconomic time series. In particular, we consider a limit where the number of random variables N and the number of consecutive time measurements T are large but the ratio N / T is fixed. In this regime the underlying random matrices are asymptotically equivalent to Free Random Variables (FRV).Application of these methods for macroeconomic indicators for Poland economy is also presented.

Toy Model for Large Non-Symmetric Random Matrices

Non-symmetric rectangular correlation matrices occur in many problems in economics. We test the method of extracting statistically meaningful correlations between input and output variables of large dimensionality and build a toy model for artificially included correlations in large random time series. The results are then applied to analysis of polish macroeconomic data and can be used as an alternative to classical cointegration approach.

A Random Matrix Approach to VARMA Processes

We apply random matrix theory to derive spectral density of large sample covariance matrices generated by multivariate VMA(q), VAR(q) and VARMA(q1,q2) processes. In particular, we consider a limit where the number of random variables N and the number of consecutive time measurements T are large but the ratio N/T is fixed. In this regime the underlying random matrices are asymptotically equivalent to Free Random Variables (FRV). We apply the FRV calculus to calculate the eigenvalue density of the sample covariance for several VARMA-type processes. We explicitly solve the VARMA(1,1) case and demonstrate a perfect agreement between the analytical result and the spectra obtained by Monte Carlo simulations. The proposed method is purely algebraic and can be easily generalized to q1>1 and q2>1.
