New massive bigravity cosmologies with double matter coupling

We study a previously largely unexplored branch of homogeneous and isotropic background solutions in ghost-free massive bigravity with consistent double matter coupling. For a certain family of parameters we find `self-inflated' FLRW cosmologies, i.e. solutions with an accelerated early-time period during the radiation-dominated era. In addition, these solutions also display an accelerated late-time period closely mimicking GR with a cosmological constant. Interestingly, within this family, the particular case of $β_1=β_3=0$ gives bouncing cosmologies, where there is an infinite contracting past, a non-zero minimum value of the scale factor at the bounce, and an infinite expanding future.

Cosmological perturbations in massive bigravity

We present a comprehensive analysis of classical scalar, vector and tensor cosmological perturbations in ghost-free massive bigravity. In particular, we find the full evolution equations and analytical solutions in a wide range of regimes. We show that there are viable cosmological backgrounds but, as has been found in the literature, these models generally have exponential instabilities in linear perturbation theory. However, it is possible to find stable scalar cosmological perturbations for a very particular choice of parameters. For this stable subclass of models we find that vector and tensor perturbations have growing solutions. We argue that special initial conditions are needed for tensor modes in order to have a viable model.

Noether Identities and Gauge-Fixing the Action for Cosmological Perturbations

We propose and develop a general algorithm for finding the action for cosmological perturbations which rivals the conventional, gauge-invariant approach and can be applied to theories with more than one metric. We then apply it to a particular case of bigravity, focusing on the Eddington- inspired Born-Infeld theory, and show that we can obtain a nearly scale-invariant power spectrum for both scalar and tensor primordial quantum perturbations. Unfortunately, in the case of the minimal Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld theory, we find that the tensor-to-scalar ratio of perturbations is unacceptably large. We discuss the applicability of our general method and the possibility of resurrecting the specific theory we have looked at.

Observational constraints on dual intermediate inflation

We explore the observational implications of models of intermediate inflation driven by modified dispersion relations, specifically those representing the phenomenon of dimensional reduction in the ultraviolet limit. These models are distinct from the standard ones because they do not require violations of the strong energy condition, and this is reflected in their structure formation properties. We find that they can naturally accommodate deviations from exact scale-invariance. They also make clear predictions for the running of the spectral index and tensor modes, rendering the models straightforwardly falsifiable. We discuss the observational prospects for these models and the implications these may have for quantum gravity scenarios.
