Moduli spaces with external fields

We consider the geometric structures on the moduli space of static finite energy solutions to the 2+1 dimensional unitary chiral model with the Wess-Zummino-Witten (WZW) term. It is shown that the magnetic field induced by the WZW term vanishes when restricted to the moduli spaces constructed from the Grassmanian embeddings, so that the slowly moving solitons can in some cases be approximated by a geodesic motion on a space of rational maps from $\CP^1$ to the Grassmanian.

Topology and Energy of Time Dependent Unitons

We consider a class of time dependent finite energy multi-soliton solutions of the U(N) integrable chiral model in $(2+1)$ dimensions. The corresponding extended solutions of the associated linear problem have a pole with arbitrary multiplicity in the complex plane of the spectral parameter. Restrictions of these extended solutions to any spacelike plane in $\R^{2,1}$ have trivial monodromy and give rise to maps from a three sphere to U(N). We demonstrate that the total energy of each multi-soliton is quantised at the classical level and given by the third homotopy class of the extended solution. This is the first example of a topological mechanism explaining classical energy quantisation of moving solitons.

Einstein-Maxwell gravitational instantons and five dimensional solitonic strings

We study various aspects of four dimensional Einstein-Maxwell multicentred gravitational instantons. These are half-BPS Riemannian backgrounds of minimal N=2 supergravity, asymptotic to R^4, R^3 x S^1 or AdS_2 x S^2. Unlike for the Gibbons-Hawking solutions, the topology is not restricted by boundary conditions. We discuss the classical metric on the instanton moduli space. One class of these solutions may be lifted to causal and regular multi `solitonic strings', without horizons, of 4+1 dimensional N=2 supergravity, carrying null momentum.

Anti-self-dual conformal structures with null Killing vectors from projective structures

Using twistor methods, we explicitly construct all local forms of four--dimensional real analytic neutral signature anti--self--dual conformal structures $(M,[g])$ with a null conformal Killing vector. We show that $M$ is foliated by anti-self-dual null surfaces, and the two-dimensional leaf space inherits a natural projective structure. The twistor space of this projective structure is the quotient of the twistor space of $(M,[g])$ by the group action induced by the conformal Killing vector. We obtain a local classification which branches according to whether or not the conformal Killing vector is hyper-surface orthogonal in $(M, [g])$. We give examples of conformal classes which contain Ricci--flat metrics on compact complex surfaces and discuss other conformal classes with no Ricci--flat metrics.

Null Kähler structures, Symmetries and Integrability

We review the integrable systems which arise as symmetry reductions of Plebanski's heavenly equations, and their generalisations. We also show that all four-dimensional null Kahler-Einstein (or type N hyper-heavenly) metrics with symmetry can be found from solutions to a variable coefficient generalisation of the dispersionless Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation.

Einstein--Maxwell--Dilaton metrics from three--dimensional Einstein--Weyl structures

A class of time dependent solutions to $(3+1)$ Einstein--Maxwell-dilaton theory with attractive electric force is found from Einstein--Weyl structures in (2+1) dimensions corresponding to dispersionless Kadomtsev--Petviashvili and $SU(\infty)$ Toda equations. These solutions are obtained from time--like Kaluza--Klein reductions of $(3+2)$ solitons.

Paraconformal geometry of $n$th order ODEs, and exotic holonomy in dimension four

We characterise $n$th order ODEs for which the space of solutions $M$ is equipped with a particular paraconformal structure in the sense of \cite{BE}, that is a splitting of the tangent bundle as a symmetric tensor product of rank-two vector bundles. This leads to the vanishing of $(n-2)$ quantities constructed from of the ODE. If $n=4$ the paraconformal structure is shown to be equivalent to the exotic ${\cal G}_3$ holonomy of Bryant. If $n=4$, or $n\geq 6$ and $M$ admits a torsion--free connection compatible with the paraconformal structure then the ODE is trivialisable by point or contact transformations respectively. If $n=2$ or 3 $M$ admits an affine paraconformal connection with no torsion. In these cases additional constraints can be imposed on the ODE so that $M$ admits a projective structure if $n=2$, or an Einstein--Weyl structure if $n=3$. The third order ODE can in this case be reconstructed from the Einstein--Weyl data.

A dispersionless integrable system associated to Diff$(S^1)$ gauge theory

A dispersionless integrable system underlying 2+1-dimensional hyperCR Einstein--Weyl structures is obtained as a symmetry reduction of the anti--self--dual Yang--Mills equations with the gauge group Diff$(S^1)$. Two special classes of solutions are obtained from well known soliton equations by embedding SU(1,1) in ${Diff}(S^1)$.

Reduced dynamics of Ward solitons

The moduli space of static finite energy solutions to Ward's integrable chiral model is the space $M_N$ of based rational maps from $\CP^1$ to itself with degree $N$. The Lagrangian of Ward's model gives rise to a Kähler metric and a magnetic vector potential on this space. However, the magnetic field strength vanishes, and the approximate non--relativistic solutions to Ward's model correspond to a geodesic motion on $M_N$. These solutions can be compared with exact solutions which describe non--scattering or scattering solitons.

Oriented straight lines and twistor correspondence

The tangent bundle to the $n$--dimensional sphere is the space of oriented lines in $\R^{n+1}$. We characterise the smooth sections of $TS^n\to S^n$ which correspond to points in $\R^{n+1}$ as gradients of eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on $S^n$ with eigenvalue $n$. The special case of $n=6$ and its connection with almost complex geometry is discussed.

A class of Einstein--Weyl spaces associated to an integrable system of hydrodynamic type

HyperCR Einstein--Weyl equations in 2+1 dimensions reduce to a pair of quasi-linear PDEs of hydrodynamic type. All solutions to this hydrodynamic system can be in principle constructed from a twistor correspondence, thus establishing the integrability. Simple examples of solutions including the hydrodynamic reductions yield new Einstein--Weyl structures.

Harmonic functions, central quadrics, and twistor theory

Solutions to the $n$-dimensional Laplace equation which are constant on a central quadric are found. The associated twistor description of the case $n=3$ is used to characterise Gibbons-Hawking metrics with tri-holomorphic $SL(2, \C)$ symmetry.

Twistor theory of hyper-K{ä}hler metrics with hidden symmetries

We briefly review the hierarchy for the hyper-Kähler equations and define a notion of symmetry for solutions of this hierarchy. A four-dimensional hyper-Kähler metric admits a hidden symmetry if it embeds into a hierarchy with a symmetry. It is shown that a hyper-Kähler metric admits a hidden symmetry if it admits a certain Killing spinor. We show that if the hidden symmetry is tri-holomorphic, then this is equivalent to requiring symmetry along a higher time and the hidden symmetry determines a `twistor group' action as introduced by Bielawski \cite{B00}. This leads to a construction for the solution to the hierarchy in terms of linear equations and variants of the generalised Legendre transform for the hyper-Kähler metric itself given by Ivanov & Rocek \cite{IR96}. We show that the ALE spaces are examples of hyper-Kähler metrics admitting three tri-holomorphic Killing spinors. These metrics are in this sense analogous to the 'finite gap' solutions in soliton theory. Finally we extend the concept of a hierarchy from that of \cite{DM00} for the four-dimensional hyper-Kähler equations to a generalisation of the conformal anti-self-duality equations and briefly discuss hidden symmetries for these equations.

Einstein--Weyl spaces and dispersionless Kadomtsev--Petviashvili equation from Painlevé I and II

We present two constructions of new solutions to the dispersionless KP (dKP) equation arising from the first two Painlevé transcendents. The first construction is a hodograph transformation based on Einstein--Weyl geometry, the generalised Nahm's equation and the isomonodromy problem. The second construction, motivated by the first, is a direct characterisation of solutions to dKP which are constant on a central quadric. We show how the solutions to the dKP equations can be used to construct some three-dimensional Einstein--Weyl structures, and four--dimensional anti-self-dual null-Kähler metrics.

Anti-self-dual four-manifolds with a parallel real spinor

Anti-self-dual metrics in the $(++--)$ signature which admit a covariantly constant real spinor are studied. It is shown that finding such metrics reduces to solving a fourth order integrable PDE, and some examples are given. The corresponding twistor space is characterised by existence of a preferred non-zero real section of $κ^{-1/4}$, where $κ$ is the canonical line bundle of the twistor space It is demonstrated that if the parallel spinor is preserved by a Killing vector, then the fourth order PDE reduces to the dispersionless Kadomtsev--Petviashvili equation and its linearisation. Einstein--Weyl structures on the space of trajectories of the symmetry are characterised by the existence of a parallel weighted null vector.
