Looking through the Kerr disk

We study null geodesics that connect the two asymptotically flat regions of the maximally extended Kerr spacetime. These vortical geodesics traverse both horizons and pass through the ring singularity, linking the positive-$r$ exterior to the negative-$r$ asymptotic side. Using impact parameters, we identify a closed subset of parameter space, the inner throat, where the radial potential has no real roots, and photons exhibit no radial turning points. In this region, at most two constant-latitude geodesics exist, one of which is aligned with the principal null direction. We also identify the forbidden polar-angle band that limits the range of geodesics reaching an asymptotic observer. We solve the geodesic equations analytically and numerically in Eddington-Finkelstein-like coordinates, obtaining mutually consistent results that correct and extend previously available formulae. The resulting trajectories are used to construct simulated views for an observer in the negative-$r$ domain, revealing strong image distortion and inversion, with possible implications for analogous white-hole configurations.

A critical threshold for the cosmological Euler-Poisson system

We consider the gravitational Euler-Poisson system with a linear equation of state on an expanding cosmological model of the Universe. The expansion of the spatial sections introduces an additional dissipating effect in the Euler equation. We prescribe the expansion rate of space by a scale factor $a(t)=t^α$ with $α\in(0,1)$, which describes the growth of length scales over time. This model is regularly applied in cosmology to study classical fluids in an expanding Universe. We study the behaviour of solutions to this system arising from small, near-homogeneous initial data and discover a \emph{critical} change of behaviour near the expansion rate $α=2/3$, which corresponds to the matter-dominated regime in cosmology. In particular, we prove that for $α>2/3$ the fluid variables are global in time and remain small provided they are sufficiently small in a suitable norm initially. In the complementary regime $α\leq2/3$, we present numerical evidence for shock formation of solutions to the Euler equation for arbitrarily small initial data. In combination, this establishes the existence of a critical stability threshold for barotropic fluids in expanding domains. In contrast to our previous work on the corresponding relativistic system, the threshold in the classical system considered here is independent of the speed of sound of the fluid. This establishes that fluids in cosmology behave fundamentally different in the non-relativistic regime than in the relativistic one.

Instability mechanisms on asymptotically AdS black hole backgrounds

We investigate dynamics of the conformal scalar equation with defocusing cubic nonlinearity and Robin boundary conditions on the Reissner-Nordström-anti-de Sitter background. At certain parts of the parameters phase space the zero solution ceases to be stable. We present two mechanisms responsible for this phenomenon.

Nonlinear oscillations of strings and beams

We investigate the time-periodic solutions to the nonlinear wave and beam equations and uncover their intricate, fractal-like structure. In particular, we identify a new class of large-energy solutions with complex mode compositions and propose a systematic framework for their analysis. A Floquet stability study reveals that this class contains solutions that are linearly stable, suggesting that they may play a significant role in the nonlinear dynamics of the systems.

Complex structure of time-periodic solutions decoded in Poincaré-Lindstedt series: the cubic conformal wave equation on $\mathbb{S}^{3}$

This work explores the rich structure of spherically symmetric time-periodic solutions of the cubic conformal wave equation on $\mathbb{S}^{3}$. We discover that the families of solutions bifurcating from the eigenmodes of the linearised equation form patterns similar to the ones observed for the cubic wave equation. Alongside the Galerkin approaches, we study them using the new method based on the Padé approximants. To do so, we provide a rigorous perturbative construction of solutions. Due to the conformal symmetry, the solutions presented in this work serve as examples of large time-periodic solutions of the conformally coupled scalar field on the anti-de Sitter background.

New class of time-periodic solutions to the 1D cubic wave equation

In recent papers (arXiv:2407.16507, arXiv:2408.05158) we presented results suggesting the existence of a new class of time-periodic solutions to the defocusing cubic wave equation on a one-dimensional interval with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Here we confirm these findings by rigorously constructing solutions from this class. The proof uses rational arithmetic computations to verify essential operator bounds.

Periodic Solutions for the 1d Cubic Wave Equation with Dirichlet Boundary Conditions

We study time-periodic solutions for the cubic wave equation on an interval with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We begin by following the perturbative construction of Vernov and Khrustalev and provide a rigorous derivation of the fourth-order expansion in small amplitude, which we use to verify the Galerkin scheme. In the main part, we focus on exploring large solutions numerically. We find an intricate bifurcation structure of time-periodic solutions forming a fractal-like pattern and explore it for the first time. Our results suggest that time-periodic solutions exist for arbitrary frequencies, with appearance of fine bifurcation structure likely related to the Cantor set families of solutions described in previous rigorous works.

Instability of nonlinear scalar field on strongly charged asymptotically AdS black hole background

The conformally invariant scalar equation permits the Robin boundary condition at infinity of asymptotically-AdS spacetimes. We show how the dynamics of conformal cubic scalar field on the Reissner-Nordström-anti-de Sitter background depend on the black hole size, charge, and choice of the boundary condition. We study the whole range of admissible charges, including the extremal case. In particular, we observe the transition in stability of the field for large black holes at the specific critical value of the charge. Similarities between Reissner-Nordström and Kerr black hole let us suspect that a similar effect may also occur in rotating black holes.

Trees, trunks, and branches -- bifurcation structure of time-periodic solutions to $u_{tt}-u_{xx}\pm u^{3}=0$

We propose a systematic approach to analysing the complex structure of time-periodic solutions to the cubic wave equation on an interval with Dirichlet boundary conditions first reported in arXiv:2407.16507. The analysis we present is based on a detailed study of sparse mode interactions suggested by the previous numerical work. Our results complement prior rigorous existence proofs and suggest that solutions exist for any frequency, however, they may be arbitrarily large.

Multisoliton solutions for equivariant wave maps on a $2+1$ dimensional wormhole

We study equivariant wave maps from the $2+1$ dimensional wormhole to the 2-sphere. This model has explicit harmonic map solutions which, in suitable coordinates, have the form of the sine-Gordon kinks/anti-kinks. We conjecture that there exist asymptotically static chains of $N\geq 2$ alternating kinks and anti-kinks whose subsequent rates of expansion increase in geometric progression as $t\rightarrow \infty$. Our argument employs the method of collective coordinates to derive effective finite-dimensional ODE models for the asymptotic dynamics of $N$-chains. For $N=2,3$ the predictions of these effective models are verified by direct PDE computations which demonstrate that the $N$-chains lie at the threshold of kink-anti-kink annihilation.

Phase transition between shock formation and stability in cosmological fluids

We demonstrate a novel phase transition from stable to unstable fluid behaviour for fluid-filled cosmological spacetimes undergoing decelerated expansion. This transition occurs when the fluid speed of sound $c_S$ exceeds a critical value relative to the expansion rate $a(t) = t^α$ of spacetime. We present an explicit relationship between $α$ and $c_S$ , which subdivides the $(α,c_S)$-parameter space into two regions. Using rigorous techniques, we establish stability of quiet fluid solutions in the first stable region. Numerical experiments reveal that the complement of the stable region consists of unstable solutions, implying sharpness of our stability result. We provide a definitive analytical bound and high-precision numerical evidence for the exact location of the critical line separating the stable from the unstable region.

Dynamics of nonlinear scalar field with Robin boundary condition on the Schwarzschild--Anti-de Sitter background

This work concerns the dynamics of conformal cubic scalar field on a Schwarzschild--anti-de Sitter background. The main focus is on understanding how it depends on the size of the black hole and the Robin boundary condition. We identify a critical curve in the parameter space that separates regions with distinct asymptotic behaviours. For defocusing nonlinearity, the global attractor undergoes a pitchfork bifurcation, whereas for the focusing case, we identify a region of the phase space where all solutions blow up in finite time. In the course of this study we observe an interplay between black hole geometry, boundary conditions, and the nonlinear dynamics of scalar fields in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime.

Resonant Dynamics and the Instability of the Box Minkowski Model

We revisit the box Minkowski model [Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 221101 (2012)] and provide a strong argument that, subject to the Dirichlet boundary condition, it is unstable toward black hole formation for arbitrarily small generic perturbations. Using weakly nonlinear perturbation theory, we derive the resonant system, which compared to systems with the anti-de Sitter asymptotics, has extra resonant terms, and study its properties, including conserved quantities. We find that the generic solution of the resonant system becomes singular in finite time. Surprisingly, the additional resonant interactions do not significantly affect the singular evolution. Furthermore, we find that the interaction coefficients take a relatively simple form, making this a particularly attractive toy model of turbulent gravitational instability.

Characteristic approach to the soliton resolution

As a toy model for understanding the soliton resolution phenomenon we consider a characteristic initial boundary value problem for the 4$d$ equivariant Yang-Mills equation outside a ball. Our main objective is to illustrate the advantages of employing outgoing null (or asymptotically null) foliations in analyzing the relaxation processes due to the dispersal of energy by radiation. In particular, within this approach it is evident that the endstate of evolution must be non-radiative (meaning vanishing flux of energy at future null infinity). In our toy model such non-radiative configurations are given by a static solution (called the half-kink) plus an alternating chain of $N$ decoupled kinks and antikinks. We show numerically that the configurations $N=0$ (static half-kink) and $N=1$ (superposition of the static half-kink and the antikink which recedes to infinity) appear as generic attractors and we determine a codimension-one borderline between their basins of attraction. The rates of convergence to these attractors are analyzed in detail.

The structure of the singular ring in Kerr-like metrics

The Kerr geometry is believed to represent the exterior spacetime of astrophysical black holes. We here re-analyze the geometry of Kerr-like metrics (Kerr, Kerr-Newman, Kerr-de Sitter, and Kerr-anti de Sitter), paying particular attention to the region near the singular set. We find that, although the Kretschmann scalar vanishes at the singular set along a given direction, a certain combination of curvature invariants diverges regardless of the direction of approach. We also find that the two-dimensional geometry induced by the spacetime metric on the orbits of the isometry group also possesses a singularity regardless of the direction of approach. Likewise, the two-dimensional geometry in the directions orthogonal to the isometry orbits is $C^{2}$-divergent, but extends continuously at the singular set as a cone with opening angle $4π$. We conclude by showing that tidal forces lead to infinite stresses on neighboring geodesics that approach the singular set, destroying any such observers in finite proper time. Those geodesics that come in from infinity and do not hit the singular set but approach it are found to need tremendous energy to get close to the singular set, experiencing an acceleration transversal to the equatorial plane which grows without bound when the minimal distance of approach goes to zero. While establishing these results, we also present an alternative description of some other known properties, as well as introducing toroidal coordinates that provide a hands-on description of the double-covering for the geometry near the singular set.
