Knot-theoretic flocks

We characterize the para-associative ternary quasigroups (flocks) applicable to knot theory, and show which of these structures are isomorphic. We enumerate them up to order 64. We note that the operation used in knot-theoretic flocks has its non-associative version in extra loops. We use a group action on the set of flock colorings to improve the cocycle invariant associated with the knot-theoretic flock (co)homology.

Homology of ternary algebras yielding invariants of knots and knotted surfaces

We define homology of ternary algebras satisfying axioms derived from particle scattering or, equivalently, from the third Reidemeister move. We show that ternary quasigroups satisfying these axioms appear naturally in invariants of Reidemeister, Yoshikawa, and Roseman moves. Our homology has a degenerate subcomplex. The normalized homology yields invariants of knots and knotted surfaces.

Layers of knot region colorings and higher differentials

We inductively define layers of colorings of knot and knotted surface diagrams using ternary quasigroups. Homological invariants from such systems of colorings use shorter differentials and of higher degree than the standard homology differentials, and give access to typically more complex homology groups.

Knot-theoretic ternary groups

We describe various properties and give several characterizations of ternary groups satisfying two axioms derived from the third Reidemeister move in knot theory. Using special attributes of such ternary groups, such as semi-commutativity, we construct a ternary invariant of curves immersed in compact surfaces, considered up to flat Reidemeister moves.

On a homology of ternary groups with applications to knot theory

We define a homology for ternary groups using both associativity and skew elements. We describe the odd-even construction which yields many examples of ternary groups. We define the ternary knot group, consider its homomorphisms into ternary groups, and discuss the applications.

Ternary quasigroups in knot theory

We show that some ternary quasigroups appear naturally as invariants of classical links and links on surfaces. We also note how to obtain from them invariants of Yoshikawa moves. In our previous paper, we defined homology theory for algebras satisfying two axioms derived from the third Reidemeister move. In this paper, we show a degenerate subcomplex suitable for ternary quasigroups satisfying these axioms, and corresponding to the first Reidemeister move. For such ternary quasigroups with an additional condition that the primary operation equals to the second division operation, we also define another subcomplex, corresponding to the second flat Reidemeister move. Based on the normalized homology, we define cocycle invariants.

Categories of diagrams with irreversible moves

We work with a generalization of knot theory, in which one diagram is reachable from another via a finite sequence of moves if a fixed condition, regarding the existence of certain morphisms in an associated category, is satisfied for every move of the sequence. This conditional setting leads to a possibility of irreversible moves, terminal states, and to using functors more general than the ones used as knot invariants. Our main focus is the category of diagrams with binary relations on the set of arcs, indicating which arc can move over another arc. We define homology of binary relations, and merge it with quandle homology, to obtain the homology for partial quandles with binary relations. This last homology can be used to analyze link diagrams with binary relations on the set of components.

On some ternary operations in knot theory

We introduce a way to color the regions of a classical knot diagram using ternary operations, so that the number of colorings is a knot invariant. By choosing appropriate substitutions in the algebras that we assign to diagrams, one obtains the relations from the knot group, and from the core group. Using the ternary operator approach, we generalize the Dehn presentation of the knot group to extra loops, and a similar presentation for the core group to the variety of Moufang loops.

Coloring invariants of spatial graphs

We define the fundamental quandle of a spatial graph and several invariants derived from it. In the category of graph tangles, we define an invariant based on the walks in the graph and cocycles from nonabelian quandle cohomology.

Homology operations on homology of quandles

We consider various homological operations on homology of quandles. We introduce the notion of quandle partial derivatives, and extreme chains on which appropriate partial derivatives vanish. Extreme chains yield homological operations. We also consider the degree one homology operations created using elements of the quandle satisfying the so-called $k$-condition.

Three geometric applications of quandle homology

In this paper we describe three geometric applications of quandle homology. We show that it gives obstructions to tangle embeddings, provides the lower bound for the 4-move distance between links, and can be used in determining periodicity of links.

The quandle of the trefoil knot as the Dehn quandle of the torus

We prove that the fundamental quandle of the trefoil knot is isomorphic to the projective primitive subquandle of transvections of the symplectic space $\Z \oplus \Z$. The last quandle can be identified with the Dehn quandle of the torus and the cord quandle on a 2-sphere with four punctures. We also show that the fundamental quandle of the long trefoil knot is isomorphic to the cord quandle on a 2-sphere with a hole and three punctures.

Biquandle longitude invariant of long virtual knots

It is known that the number of biquandle colorings of a long virtual knot diagram, with a fixed color of the initial arc, is a knot invariant. In this paper we describe a more subtle invariant: a family of biquandle endomorphisms obtained from the set of colorings and longitudinal information.

Homology of dihedral quandles

We solve the conjecture by R. Fenn, C. Rourke and B. Sanderson that the rack homology of dihedral quandles satisfies H_3^R(R_p) = Z \oplus Z_p for p odd prime. We also show that H_n^R(R_p) contains Z_p for n>2. Furthermore, we show that the torsion of H_n^R(R_3) is annihilated by 3. We also prove that the quandle homology H_4^Q(R_p) contains Z_p for p odd prime. We conjecture that for n>1 quandle homology satisfies: H_n^Q(R_p) = Z_p^{f_n}, where f_n are "delayed" Fibonacci numbers, that is, f_n = f_{n-1} + f_{n-3} and f(1)=f(2)=0, f(3)=1. Our paper is the first step in approaching this conjecture.

Burnside kei

This paper is motivated by a general question: for which values of k and n is the universal Burnside kei of k generators and Kei "exponent" n, $\bar Q(k,n)$, finite? It is known (starting from the work of M. Takasaki (1942)) that $\bar Q(2,n)$ is isomorphic to the dihedral quandle Z_n and $\bar Q(3,3)$ is isomorphic to Z_3 + Z_3. In this paper we give descriptions of $\bar Q(4,3)$ and $\bar Q(3,4)$. We also investigate some properties of arbitrary quandles satisfying the universal Burnside relation (of "exponent" n) a=...a*b*...*a*b. In particular, we prove that the order of a finite commutative kei is a power of 3. Invariants of links related to Burnside kei $\bar Q(k,n)$ are invariant under n-moves.
