Standard Model Soft and Hard QCD at ATLAS and CMS

Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) is explored at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) over a wide range of energy scales, from soft hadronic interactions to hard parton scattering. This contribution presents a selection of recent measurements from the ATLAS and CMS experiments probing QCD in proton--proton collisions at the LHC. The results span a broad range of momentum scales, from studies of charged-particle event-shape observables in minimum-bias events, which are sensitive to soft QCD dynamics and hadronisation, to measurements of inclusive di-jet production that provide stringent tests of perturbative QCD. Recent studies of double-parton scattering in same-sign $WW$ production are also discussed, offering new insight into multi-parton interactions inside the proton. Finally, the capabilities of the forward proton detectors operated by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations are briefly reviewed, highlighting their contribution to the LHC physics programme through measurements of diffractive and photon-induced processes.

On the Charged Fragments Tagging in the ATLAS Detector during the 2025 Oxygen Campaign

During the Summer of 2025 the LHC collided protons with oxygen, oxygen with oxygen and neon with neon. The ATLAS experiment recorded these data with its Forward Proton detectors (AFP) inserted on both: the proton and ion sides. This allows access to many interesting studies with scattered fragments being tagged. A few analysis ideas are presented followed by preliminary studies of what could be visible in the AFP.

Prospects for Proton-Proton Measurements with Tagged Protons in ATLAS

In 2017, ATLAS has been equipped with a new, dedicated detector system allowing measurements of forward protons scattered at small angles in diffractive and electromagnetic processes. These ATLAS Forward Proton detectors (AFP) can operate during the standard high-luminosity LHC runs and collect large amounts of integrated luminosity. This gives a possibility to study rare interactions, in particular, the two-photon processes. The physics programme includes measurements of photon-photon interactions present in the Standard Model, as well as using searches for new physics. In this paper, the AFP detectors and physics goals are briefly presented.

Diffractive Physics at the LHC

Diffractive processes possible to be measured at the LHC are listed and briefly discussed. This includes soft (elastic scattering, exclusive meson pair production, diffractive bremsstrahlung) and hard (single and double Pomeron exchange jets, $γ$+jet, W/Z, jet-gap-jet, exclusive jets) processes as well as Beyond Stanrad Model phenomena (anomalous gauge couplings, magnetic monopoles).

PHOTON-2017 conference proceedings

This document collects the proceedings of the PHOTON 2017 conference ("International Conference on the Structure and the Interactions of the Photon", including the 22th "International Workshop on Photon-Photon Collisions", and the "International Workshop on High Energy Photon Colliders") held at CERN (Geneva) in May 2017. The latest experimental and theoretical developments on the topics of the PHOTON conference series are covered: (i) $γ\,γ$ processes in e$^+$e$^-$, proton-proton (pp) and nucleus-nucleus (AA) collisions at current and future colliders, (ii) $γ$-hadron interactions in e$^\pm$p, pp, and AA collisions, (iii) final-state photon production (including Standard Model studies and searches beyond it) in pp and AA collisions, and (iv) high-energy $γ$-ray astrophysics. These proceedings are dedicated to the memory of Maria Krawczyk.

GenEx - Exclusive Meson Generator

Exclusive light meson production processes possible to be measured at RHIC and LHC accelerators are briefly described. This includes Pomeron and photon induced continuum of pions and kaons as well as $f_0$ and $ρ^0$ resonant production. Next, GenEx, a new Monte Carlo generator recently developed in Cracow, is presented. Its purpose is to generate resonant and non-resonant pion and kaon production and diffractive Bremsstrahlung. Its future development will take into account spin (polarization) effects and simulate corrections due to absorption and re-scattering.

Single-diffractive production of charmed mesons at the LHC within the $k_t$-factorization approach

We discuss the single diffractive production of $c \bar c$ pairs and charmed mesons at the LHC. For a first time we propose a $k_t$-factorization approach to the diffractive processes. The transverse momentum dependent diffractive parton distributions are obtained from standard (collinear) diffractive parton distributions used in the literature. In this calculation the transverse momentum of the pomeron is neglected with respect to transverse momentum of partons entering the hard process. We also perform the first evaluation of the cross sections at the LHC using the diffractive transverse momentum dependent parton distributions. The results of the new approach are compared with those of the standard collinear one. Significantly larger cross sections are obtained in the $k_t$-factorization approach where some part of higher-order effects is effectively included. The differences between corresponding differential distributions are discussed. Finally, we present a feasibility study of the process at the LHC using proton tagging technique. The analysis suggests that the measurement of single diffractive charm production is possible using ATLAS and CMS/TOTEM detectors.

Probing the BFKL Pomeron with Future ATLAS Forward Detectors

The Jet-Gap-Jet (JGJ) process as a way to test the Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov Pomeron is introduced. The comparison with the Tevatron data as well as the predictions for the LHC are presented. In the second part, the possibility to measure the Double Pomeron Exchange (DPE) Jet-Gap-Jet process in the ATLAS experiment with additional AFP detectors is described. The ratio of the DPE jet-gap-jet cross section to the DPE jet cross section is presented.

Hard Diffraction with Proton Tagging at the LHC

The main parts of the LHC diffractive physics programme possible to be measured using a proton tagging technique are presented. The geometric acceptance of the ATLAS forward proton detectors: ALFA and AFP for various LHC optics settings are shown. The probabilities of observing a proton originating from a minimum-bias event in ALFA and AFP stations are given. The main properties of single diffractive and double Pomeron exchange production of dijets, photon+jet, jet-gap-jet and W/Z bosons are discussed. The possibility of measuring the jet production in exclusive (double proton tag) and semi-exclusive (single tag) mode is evaluated.

LHC High Beta* Runs: Transport and Unfolding Methods

The paper describes the transport of the elastically and diffractively scattered protons in the proton-proton interactions at the LHC for the high beta* runs. A parametrisation of the attered proton transport through the LHC magnetic lattice is presented. The accuracy of the unfolding of the kinematic variables of the scattered protons is discussed.
