Integrability in the chiral model of magic angles

Magic angles in the chiral model of twisted bilayer graphene are parameters for which the chiral version of the Bistritzer--MacDonald Hamiltonian exhibits a flat band at energy zero. We compute the sums over powers of (complex) magic angles and use that to show that the set of magic angles is infinite. We also provide a new proof of the existence of the first real magic angle, showing also that the corresponding flat band has minimal multiplicity for the simplest possible choice of potentials satisfying all symmetries. These results indicate (though do not prove) a hidden integrability of the chiral model.

Fine structure of flat bands in a chiral model of magic angles

We analyze symmetries of Bloch eigenfunctions at magic angles for the Tarnopolsky--Kruchkov--Vishwanath chiral model of the twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) following the framework introduced by Becker--Embree--Wittsten--Zworski. We show that vanishing of the first Bloch eigenvalue away from the Dirac points implies its vanishing at all momenta, that is the existence of a flat band. We also show how the multiplicity of the flat band is related to the nodal set of the Bloch eigenfunctions. We conclude with two numerical observations about the structure of flat bands.

The scattering phase: seen at last

The scattering phase, defined as $ \log \det S ( λ) / 2πi $ where $ S ( λ) $ is the (unitary) scattering matrix, is the analogue of the counting function for eigenvalues when dealing with exterior domains and is closely related to Krein's spectral shift function. We revisit classical results on asymptotics of the scattering phase and point out that it is never monotone in the case of strong trapping of waves. Perhaps more importantly, we provide the first numerical calculations of scattering phases for non-radial scatterers. They show that the asymptotic Weyl law is accurate even at low frequencies and reveal effects of trapping such as lack of monotonicity. This is achieved by using the recent high level multiphysics finite element software FreeFEM.

Mathematics of magic angles in a model of twisted bilayer graphene

We provide a mathematical account of the recent Physical Reviews Letter by Tarnopolsky--Kruchkov--Vishwanath. The new contributions are a spectral characterization of magic angles, its accurate numerical implementation and an exponential estimate on the squeezing of all bands as the angle decreases. Pseudospectral phenomena due to the non-hermitian nature of operators appearing in the model play a crucial role in our analysis.

Analytic hypoellipticity of Keldysh operators

We consider Keldysh-type operators, $ P = x_1 D_{x_1}^2 + a (x) D_{x_1} + Q (x, D_{x'} ) $, $ x = ( x_1, x') $ with analytic coefficients, and with $ Q ( x, D_{x'} ) $ second order, principally real and elliptic in $ D_{x'} $ for $ x $ near zero. We show that if $ P u =f $, $ u \in C^\infty $, and $ f $ is analytic in a neighbourhood of $ 0 $ then $ u $ is analytic in a neighbourhood of $ 0 $. This is a consequence of a microlocal result valid for operators of any order with Lagrangian radial sets. Our result proves a generalized version of a conjecture made by the second author and Lebeau and has applications to scattering theory.

Spectral characterization of magic angles in twisted bilayer graphene

Twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) has been experimentally observed to exhibit almost flat bands when the twisting occurs at certain magic angles. In this letter, we report new results on the continuum model of twisted bilayer graphene and its electronic band structure. Under we show that in the approximation of vanishing AA-coupling, the magic angles (at which there exist entirely flat bands) are given as the eigenvalues of a non-hermitian operator, and that all bands start squeezing exponentially fast as the angle $θ$ tends to $0$. In particular, as the interaction potential changes, the dynamics of magic angles involves the non-physical complex eigenvalues. Using our new spectral characterization, we show that the equidistant scaling of inverse magic angles, is special for the choice of tunnelling potentials in the continuum model, and is not protected by symmetries. While we also show that the protection of zero-energy states holds in the continuum model as long as particle-hole symmetry is preserved, we observe that the existence of flat bands and the exponential squeezing are special properties of the chiral model.

Honeycomb structures in magnetic fields

We consider reduced-dimensionality models of honeycomb lattices in magnetic fields and report results about the spectrum, the density of states, self-similarity, and metal/insulator transitions under disorder. We perform a spectral analysis by which we discover a fractal Cantor spectrum for irrational magnetic flux through a honeycomb, prove the existence of zero energy Dirac cones for each rational flux, obtain an explicit expansion of the density of states near the conical points, and show the existence of mobility edges under Anderson-type disorder. Our results give a precise description of de Haas-van Alphen and Quantum Hall effects, and provide quantitative estimates on transport properties. In particular, our findings explain experimentally observed asymmetry phenomena by going beyond the perfect cone approximation.

Resonances for obstacles in hyperbolic space

We consider scattering by star-shaped obstacles in hyperbolic space and show that resonances satisfy a universal bound $\mathrm{Im}\,λ\leq -\frac{1}{2}$ which is optimal in dimension $2$. In odd dimensions we also show that $\mathrm{Im}\,λ\leq -\fracμρ$ for a universal constant $μ$, where $ρ$ is the radius of a ball containing the obstacle; this gives an improvement for small obstacles. In dimensions $3$ and higher the proofs follow the classical vector field approach of Morawetz, while in dimension $2$ we obtain our bound by working with spaces coming from general relativity. We also show that in odd dimensions resonances of small obstacles are close, in a suitable sense, to Euclidean resonances.

Outgoing solutions via Gevrey-2 properties

Gajic--Warnick have recently proposed a definition of scattering resonances based on Gevrey-2 regularity at infinity and introduced a new class of potentials for which resonances can be defined. We show that standard methods based on complex scaling apply to a slightly larger class of potentials and show existence of resonances in larger angles.

Viscosity limits for 0th order pseudodifferential operators

Motivated by the work of Colin de Verdière and Saint-Raymond on spectral theory 0th order pseudodifferential operators on tori we consider viscosity limits in which 0th order operators $ P $ are replaced by $ P + i νΔ$, $ ν> 0 $. By adapting the Helffer--Sjöstrand theory of scattering resonances we show that in a complex neighbourhood of the continuous spectrum eigenvalues of $ P + i νΔ$ have limits as viscosity $ ν$ goes to 0. In the simplified setting of tori this justifies claims made in the physics literature.

An introduction to microlocal complex deformations

In this expository article we relate the presentation of weighted estimates in the book of Martinez to the Bergman kernel approach of Sjöstrand. It is meant as an introduction to the Helffer--Sjöstrand theory (designed for the study of quantum resonances) in the simplest setting and to its adaptations to compact manifolds.

Microlocal analysis of forced waves

We use radial estimates for pseudodifferential operators to describe long time evolution of solutions to $ i u_t - P u = f $ where $ P $ is a self-adjoint 0th order pseudodifferential operator satisfying hyperbolic dynamical assumptions and where $ f $ is smooth. This is motivated by recent results of Colin de Verdière and Saint-Raymond [arXiv:1801.05582] concerning a microlocal model of internal waves in stratified fluids.

A semiclassical approach to the Kramers--Smoluchowski equation

We consider the Kramers--Smoluchowski equation at a low temperature regime and show how semiclassical techniques developed for the study of the Witten Laplacian and Fokker--Planck equation provide quantitative results. This equation comes from molecular dynamics and temperature plays the role of a semiclassical paramater. The presentation is self-contained in the one dimensional case, with pointers to the recent paper \cite{Mi16} for results needed in higher dimensions. One purpose of this note is to provide a simple introduction to semiclassical methods in this context.

Fractal uncertainty for transfer operators

We show directly that the fractal uncertainty principle of Bourgain-Dyatlov [arXiv:1612.09040] implies that there exists $ σ> 0 $ for which the Selberg zeta function for a convex co-compact hyperbolic surface has only finitely many zeros with $ \Re s \geq \frac12 - σ$. That eliminates advanced microlocal techniques of Dyatlov-Zahl [arXiv:1504.06589] though we stress that these techniques are still needed for resolvent bounds and for possible generalizations to the case of non-constant curvature.

Magnetic oscillations in a model of graphene

We consider a quantum graph as a model of graphene in constant magnetic field and describe the density of states in terms of relativistic Landau levels satisfying a Bohr--Sommerfeld quantization condition. That provides semiclassical corrections (with the magnetic flux as the semiclassical parameter) in the study of magnetic oscillations.

Rough controls for Schroedinger operators on 2-tori

The purpose of this note is to use the results and methods of our previous work with Bourgain to obtain control and observability by rough functions and sets on rectangular 2-tori. We show that any Lebesgue measurable set of positive measure can be used for observability for the Schroedinger equation. This leads to controllability with rough localization and control functions. For non-empty open sets this follows from the results of Haraux '89 and Jaffard '89 while for square tori and sufficiently long times this can be deduced from the results of Jakobson '97.
