Periodic Lp estimates by R-boundedness: Applications to the Navier-Stokes equations

General evolution equations in Banach spaces are investigated. Based on an operator-valued version of de Leeuw's transference principle, time-periodic $L^p$ estimates of maximal regularity type are established from $\mathscr{R}$-bounds of the family of solution operators ($\mathscr{R}$-solvers) to the corresponding resolvent problems. With this method, existence of time-periodic solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations is shown for two configurations: in a periodically moving bounded domain and in an exterior domain, subject to prescribed time-periodic forcing and boundary data.

Fluid-plate interaction under periodic forcing

The motion of a thin elastic plate interacting with a viscous fluid is investigated. A periodic force acting on the plate is considered, which in a setting without damping could lead to a resonant response. The interaction with the viscous fluid provides a damping mechanism due to the energy dissipation in the fluid. Moreover, an internal damping mechanism in the plate is introduced. In this setting, we show that the periodic forcing leads to a time-periodic (non-resonant) solution. We employ the Navier-Stokes and the Kirchhoff-Love plate equation in a periodic cell structure to model the motion of the viscous fluid and the elastic plate, respectively. Maximal Lp regularity for the linearized system is established in a framework of time-periodic function spaces. Existence of a solution to the fully nonlinear system is subsequently shown with a fixed-point argument.

Falling drop in an unbounded liquid reservoir: Steady-state solutions

The equations governing the motion of a three-dimensional liquid drop moving freely in an unbounded liquid reservoir under the influence of a gravitational force are investigated. Provided the (constant) densities in the two liquids are sufficiently close, existence of a steady-state solution is shown. The proof is based on a suitable linearization of the equations. A setting of function spaces is introduced in which the corresponding linear operator acts as a homeomorphism.

Viscous flow around a rigid body performing a time-periodic motion

The equations governing the flow of a viscous incompressible fluid around a rigid body that performs a prescribed time-periodic motion with constant axes of translation and rotation are investigated. Under the assumption that the period and the angular velocity of the prescribed rigid-body motion are compatible, and that the mean translational velocity is non-zero, existence of a time-periodic solution is established. The proof is based on an appropriate linearization, which is examined within a setting of absolutely convergent Fourier series. Since the corresponding resolvent problem is ill-posed in classical Sobolev spaces, a linear theory is developed in a framework of homogeneous Sobolev spaces.

On periodic solutions for one-phase and two-phase problems of the Navier-Stokes equations

This paper is devoted to proving the existence of time-periodic solutions of one-phase or two-phase problems for the Navier-Stokes equations with small periodic external forces when the reference domain is close to a ball. Since our problems are formulated in time-dependent unknown domains, the problems are reduced to quasiliner systems of parabolic equations with non-homogeneous boundary conditions or transmission conditions in fixed domains by using the so-called Hanzawa transform. We separate solutions into the stationary part and the oscillatory part. The linearized equations for the stationary part have eigen-value $0$, which is avoided by changing the equations with the help of the necessary conditions for the existence of solutions to the original problems. To treat the oscillatory part, we establish the maximal $L_p$-$L_q$ regularity theorem of the periodic solutions for the system of parabolic equations with non-homogeneous boundary conditions or transmission conditions, which is obtained by the systematic use of $\mathcal{R}$-solvers to the resolvent problem for the linearized equations and the transference theorem for the $L_p$ boundedness of operator-valued Fourier multipliers. These approaches are the novelty of this paper.

On the asymptotic structure of steady Stokes and Navier-Stokes flows around a rotating two-dimensional body

We establish pointwise decay estimates for the velocity field of a steady two-dimensional Stokes flow around a rotating body via a new approach rather than analysis adopted in the previous literature. The novelty is to analyze the singular behavior of the constants in these estimates with respect to the angular velocity of the body, where such singularity is reasonable on account of the Stokes paradox. We then employ the estimates to identify the asymptotic structure at infinity of a steady scale-critical Navier-Stokes flow, being assumed to be small, around a rotating body. It is proved that the leading term is given by a self-similar Navier-Stokes flow which exhibits a circular profile and whose coefficient is the torque acting on the body.

Nonlinear acoustics: Blackstock-Crighton equations with a periodic forcing term

The Blackstock-Crighton equations describe the motion of a viscous, heat-conducting, compressible fluid. They are used as models for acoustic wave propagation in a medium in which both nonlinear and dissipative effects are taken into account. In this article, a mathematical analysis of the Blackstock-Crighton equations with a time-periodic forcing term is carried out. For arbitrary time-periodic data (sufficiently restricted in size) it is shown that a time-periodic solution of the same period always exists. This implies that the dissipative effects are sufficient to avoid resonance within the Blackstock-Crighton models. The equations are considered in a three-dimensional bounded domain with both non-homogeneous Dirichlet and Neumann boundary values. Existence of a solution is obtained via a fixed-point argument based on appropriate a priori estimates for the linearized equations.

On Time-Periodic Solutions to Parabolic Boundary Value Problems of Agmon-Douglis-Nirenberg Type

Time-periodic solutions to partial differential equations of parabolic type corresponding to an operator that is elliptic in the sense of Agmon-Douglis-Nirenberg are investigated. In the whole- and half-space case we construct an explicit formula for the solution and establish coercive Lp estimates. The estimates generalize a famous result of Agmon, Douglis and Nirenberg for elliptic problems to the time-periodic case.

Nonlinear Wave Equation with Damping: Periodic Forcing and Non-Resonant Solutions to the Kuznetsov Equation

Existence of non-resonant solutions of time-periodic type are established for the Kuznetsov equation with a periodic forcing term. The equation is considered in a three-dimensional whole-space, half-space and bounded domain, and with both non-homogeneous Dirichlet and Neumann boundary values. A method based on Lp estimates of the corresponding linearization, namely the wave equation with Kelvin-Voigt damping, is employed.

Time-periodic solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations in the three-dimensional whole-space with a non-zero drift term: Asymptotic profile at spatial infinity

An asymptotic expansion at spatial infinity of a weak time-periodic solution to the Navier-Stokes equations with a non-zero drift term in the three-dimensional whole-space is carried out. The asymptotic profile is explicitly identified and expressed in terms of the well-known Oseen fundamental solution. A pointwise estimate is given for the remainder term.

Time-period flow of a viscous liquid past a body

Time-periodic solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations that govern the flow of a viscous liquid past a three-dimensional body moving with a time-periodic velocity are investigated. The net motion of the body over a full time-period is assumed to be non-zero. In this case the appropriate linearization of the system is constituted by the time-periodic Oseen equations in a three-dimensional exterior domain. A priori Lp estimates are established for this linearization. Based on these estimates, existence of a solution to the fully non-linear Navier-Stokes problem is obtained by the contraction mapping principle.

Existence and regularity of time-periodic solutions to the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations

Existence, uniqueness, and regularity of time-periodic solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations in the three-dimensional whole-space are investigated. We consider the Navier-Stokes equations with a non-zero drift term corresponding to the physical model of a fluid flow around a body that moves with a non-zero constant velocity. Existence of a strong time-periodic solution is shown for small time-periodic data. It is further shown that this solution is unique in a large class of weak solutions that can be considered physically reasonable. Finally, we establish regularity properties for any strong solution regardless of its size.

Maximal regularity of the time-periodic Navier-Stokes system

Time-periodic solutions to the linearized Navier-Stokes system in the $n$-dimensional whole-space are investigated. For time-periodic data in $L^q$-spaces, maximal regularity and corresponding a priori estimates for the associated time-periodic solutions are established. More specifically, a Banach space of time-periodic vector fields is identified with the property that the linearized Navier-Stokes operator maps this space homeomorphically onto the $L^q$-space of time-periodic data.
