Additively indecomposable quadratic forms over biquadratic and simplest cubic fields

In this paper, we study additively indecomposable quadratic forms over real biquadratic and simplest cubic fields. In particular, we show that over these fields, we can always find such a classical form in 2 variables, which differs from the situation for forms over integers. Moreover, for some cases, we derive a lower bound on the number of classical, additively indecomposable binary quadratic forms up to equivalence.

Linear constellations in primes with arithmetic restrictions

We prove analogues of the theorem of Green and Tao on linear constellations in primes, in which the primes under consideration are restricted by certain arithmetic conditions. Our first main result is conditional upon Hooley's Riemann hypothesis and imposes the extra condition that the primes have prescribed primitive roots. Our second main result is unconditional and imposes the extra condition that the primes have prescribed Artin symbols in given Galois number fields. In the appendix we present an application of the second result in inverse Galois theory.

Sums of two units in number fields

Let $K$ be a number field with ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_K$. Let $\mathcal{N}_K$ be the set of positive integers $n$ such that there exist units $\varepsilon, δ\in \mathcal{O}_K^\times$ satisfying $\varepsilon + δ= n$. We show that $\mathcal{N}_K$ is a finite set if $K$ does not contain any real quadratic subfield. In the case where $K$ is a cubic field, we also explicitly classify all solutions to the unit equation $\varepsilon + δ= n$ when $K$ is either cyclic or has negative discriminant.

Additively indecomposable quadratic forms over totally real number fields

We give an upper bound for the norm of the determinant of additively indecomposable, totally positive definite quadratic forms defined over the ring of integers of totally real number fields. We apply these results to find lower and upper bounds for the minimal ranks of $n$-universal quadratic forms. For $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2}),~\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{3}),~\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{5}),~\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{6})$, and $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{21})$, we classify, up to equivalence, all classical, additively indecomposable binary quadratic forms.

Additive structure of non-monogenic simplest cubic fields

We consider Shanks' simplest cubic fields $K$ for which the index $[\mathcal{O}_K:\mathbb{Z}[ρ]]$ of a root $ρ$ of the defining parametric polynomial is $3$. For them, we study the additive indecomposables of $K$ and provide a complete list of them. Moreover, we use the knowledge of the indecomposables to prove some interesting consequences on the arithmetic of $K$. Mainly, we obtain good bounds on the ranks of universal quadratic forms over $K$ and prove that the Pythagoras number of $\mathcal{O}_K$ is $6$.

Arithmetic of cubic number fields: Jacobi-Perron, Pythagoras, and indecomposables

We study a new connection between multidimensional continued fractions, such as Jacobi--Perron algorithm, and additively indecomposable integers in totally real cubic number fields. First, we find the indecomposables of all signatures in Ennola's family of cubic fields, and use them to determine the Pythagoras numbers. Second, we compute a number of periodic JPA expansions, also in Shanks' family of simplest cubic fields. Finally, we compare these expansions with indecomposables to formulate our conclusions.

Bounds on the Pythagoras number and indecomposables in biquadratic fields

We show that for all real biquadratic fields not containing $\sqrt{2}$, $\sqrt{3}$, $\sqrt{5}$, $\sqrt{6}$, $\sqrt{7},$ and $\sqrt{13}$, the Pythagoras number of the ring of algebraic integers is at least $6$. We will also provide an upper bound on the norm and the minimal (codifferent) trace of additively indecomposable integers in some families of these fields.

Artin Twin Primes

We say that a prime number $p$ is an $\textit{Artin prime}$ for $g$ if $g$ mod $p$ generates the group $(\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z})^{\times}$. For appropriately chosen integers $d$ and $g$, we present a conjecture for the asymptotic number $π_{d,g}(x)$ of primes $p \leq x$ such that both $p$ and $p+d$ are Artin primes for $g$. In particular, we identify a class of pairs $(d,g)$ for which $π_{d,g}(x) =0$. Our results suggest that the distribution of Artin prime pairs, amongst the ordinary prime pairs, is largely governed by a Poisson binomial distribution.

Trace and norm of indecomposable integers in cubic orders

We study the structure of the codifferent and of additively indecomposable integers in families of totally real cubic fields. We prove that for cubic orders in these fields, the minimal trace of indecomposable integers multiplied by totally positive elements of the codifferent can be arbitrarily large. This is very surprising, as in the so far studied examples of quadratic and simplest cubic fields, this minimum is 1 and 2. We further give sharp upper bounds on the norms of indecomposable integers in our families.

On the Pythagoras number of the simplest cubic fields

The simplest cubic fields $\mathbb{Q}(ρ)$ are generated by a root $ρ$ of the polynomial $x^3-ax^2-(a+3)x-1$ where $a\geq -1$. In this paper, we will show that the Pythagoras number of the order $\mathbb{Z}[ρ]$ is equal to $6$ for $a\geq 3$.

There are no universal ternary quadratic forms over biquadratic fields

We study totally positive definite quadratic forms over the ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_K$ of a totally real biquadratic field $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{m}, \sqrt{s})$. We restrict our attention to classical forms (i.e., those with all non-diagonal coefficients in $2\mathcal{O}_K$) and prove that no such forms in three variables are universal (i.e., represent all totally positive elements of $\mathcal{O}_K$). This provides further evidence towards Kitaoka's conjecture that there are only finitely many number fields over which such forms exist. One of our main tools are additively indecomposable elements of $\mathcal{O}_K$; we prove several new results about their properties.

Universal quadratic forms, small norms and traces in families of number fields

We obtain good estimates on the ranks of universal quadratic forms over Shanks' family of the simplest cubic fields and several other families of totally real number fields. As the main tool we characterize all the indecomposable integers in these fields and the elements of the codifferent of small trace. We also determine the asymptotics of the number of principal ideals of norm less than the square root of the discriminant.

Arithmetics in number systems with cubic base

This paper focuses on greedy expansions, one possible representation of numbers, and on arithmetical operations with them. Performing addition or multiplication some additional digits can appear. We study bounds on the number of such digits assuming the finiteness of the expansion of the considered sum or product, especially for the case of cubic Pisot units.

Indecomposable integers in real quadratic fields

In 2016, Jang and Kim stated a conjecture about the norms of indecomposable integers in real quadratic number fields $\mathbb{Q} \left( \sqrt{D} \right)$ where $D>1$ is a squarefree integer. Their conjecture was later disproved by Kala for $D \equiv 2 \bmod 4$. We investigate such indecomposable integers in greater detail. In particular, we find the minimal $D$ in each congruence class $D \equiv 1,2,3 \bmod 4$ that provides a counterexample to the Jang-Kim Conjecture; provide infinite families of such counterexamples; and state a refined version of the Jang-Kim conjecture. Lastly, we prove a slightly weaker version of our refined conjecture that is of the correct order of magnitude, showing the Jang-Kim Conjecture is only wrong by at most $O \left( \sqrt{D} \right)$.

Universal Quadratic Forms and Indecomposables over Biquadratic Fields

The aim of this article is to study (additively) indecomposable algebraic integers $\mathcal O_K$ of biquadratic number fields $K$ and universal totally positive quadratic forms with coefficients in $\mathcal O_K$. There are given sufficient conditions for an indecomposable element of a quadratic subfield to remain indecomposable in the biquadratic number field $K$. Furthermore, estimates are proven which enable algorithmization of the method of escalation over $K$. These are used to prove, over two particular biquadratic number fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2}, \sqrt{3})$ and $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{6}, \sqrt{19})$, a lower bound on the number of variables of a universal quadratic forms, verifying Kitaoka's conjecture.
