Thin shell limit and the derivation of the viscosity operator on the ellipsoid

In this paper we derive four new candidates for an intrinsic viscosity operator on an ellipsoid by using the heuristic of the thin shell limit along the scaling direction of the ellipsoid. We show that the general method of the thin shell limit through the asymptotic expansion depends on the averaging method used. We consider both the homogeneous Navier and Hodge boundary conditions. We also obtain a geometric representation of these two boundary conditions.

The Gauss formulas for Laplacians on submanifolds

There are several types of Laplacians of a vector field on a Riemannian manifold. These include the Bochner and the Hodge Laplacian. The Gauss formula for the Levi-Civita connection relates the extrinsic connection to the intrinsic connection. We extend the Gauss formula for the connection to formulas for the different types of Laplacians of a vector field on a submanifold of any codimension $k\geq 1$. In the process, we derive a Gauss formula for the Ricci operator, formulas for the divergence of the second fundamental form, and a formula for the Laplacian of a $1$-form on a surface of revolution in terms of the Lie derivatives. The formulas have applications to the study of the formulation of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on a Riemannian manifold.

The formulation of the Navier-Stokes equations on Riemannian manifolds

We consider the generalization of the Navier-Stokes equations from $\mathbb R^n$ to the Riemannian manifolds. There are inequivalent formulations of the Navier-Stokes equations on manifolds due to the different possibilities for the Laplacian operator acting on vector fields on a Riemannian manifold. We present several distinct arguments that indicate that the form of the equations proposed by Ebin and Marsden in 1970 should be adopted as the correct generalization of the Navier-Stokes to the Riemannian manifolds.

The restriction problem on the ellipsoid

Following a restriction argument in the Euclidean space, we derive a geometric invariant formula for a possible viscosity operator for an incompressible fluid flow on an ellipsoid embedded in $\mathbb R^3$. We also give an asymptotic expansion of the formula in terms of the eccentricity associated with the ellipsoid.

Blowing Up Solutions to the Zakharov System for Langmuir Waves

Langmuir waves take place in a quasi-neutral plasma and are modeled by the Zakharov system. The phenomenon of collapse, described by blowing up solutions plays a central role in their dynamics. We present in this article a review of the main mathematical properties of blowing up solutions. They include conditions for blowup in finite or infinite time, description of self-similar singular solutions and lower bounds for the rate of blowup of certain norms associated to the solutions.

Hodge decomposition of the Sobolev space $H^1$ on a space form of nonpositive curvature

The Hodge decomposition is well-known for compact manifolds. The result has been extended by Kodaira to include non-compact manifolds and $L^2$ forms. We further extend the Hodge decomposition to the Sobolev space $H^1$ for general $k$-forms on non-compact manifolds of nonpositive constant sectional curvature. As a result, we also obtain a decomposition on $\mathbb R^N$.

Almost sure boundedness of iterates for derivative nonlinear wave equations

We study nonlinear wave equations on $\mathbb R^{2+1}$ with quadratic derivative nonlinearities, which include in particular nonlinearities exhibiting a null form structure, with random initial data in $H_x^1\times L^2_x$. In contrast to the counterexamples of Zhou \cite{Zhou} and Foschi-Klainerman \cite{FK}, we obtain a uniform time interval $I$ on which the Picard iterates of all orders are almost surely bounded in $C_t(I ; \dot H_x^1)$.

Antithesis of the Stokes paradox on the hyperbolic plane

We show there exists a nontrivial $H^1_0$ solution to the steady Stokes equation on the 2D exterior domain in the hyperbolic plane. Hence we show there is no Stokes paradox in the hyperbolic setting. We also show the existence of a nontrivial solution to the steady Navier-Stokes equation in the same setting, whereas the analogous problem is open in the Euclidean case.

Asymptotic behavior of the steady Navier-Stokes equation on the hyperbolic plane

We develop the asymptotic behavior for the solutions to the stationary Navier-Stokes equation in the exterior domain of the 2D hyperbolic space. More precisely, given the finite Dirichlet norm of the velocity, we show the velocity decays to $0$ at infinity. We also address the decay rate for the vorticity and the behavior of the pressure.

On the well-posedness of relativistic viscous fluids with non-zero vorticity

We study the problem of coupling Einstein's equations to a relativistic and physically well-motivated version of the Navier-Stokes equations. Under a natural evolution condition for the vorticity, we prove existence and uniqueness in a suitable Gevrey class if the fluid is incompressible, where this condition is given an appropriate relativistic interpretation, and show that the solutions enjoy the finite propagation speed property.

An ODE for boundary layer separation on a sphere and a hyperbolic space

Ma and Wang derived an equation linking the separation location and times for the boundary layer separation of incompressible fluid flows. The equation gave a necessary condition for the separation (bifurcation) point. The purpose of this paper is to generalize the equation to other geometries, and to phrase it as a simple ODE. Moreover we consider the Navier-Stokes equation with the Coriolis effect, which is related to the presence of trade winds on Earth.

Topological defects in the abelian Higgs model

We give a rigorous description of the dynamics of the Nielsen-Olesen vortex line. In particular, given a worldsheet of a string, we construct initial data such that the corresponding solution of the abelian Higgs model will concentrate near the evolution of the string. Moreover, the constructed solution stays close to the Nielsen-Olesen vortex solution.

Non-uniqueness of the Leray-Hopf solutions in the hyperbolic setting

We consider the Navier-Stokes equation on $\mathbb{H}^{2}(-a^{2})$, the two dimensional hyperbolic space with constant sectional curvature $-a^{2}$. We prove an ill-posedness result in the sense that the uniqueness of the Leray-Hopf weak solutions to the Navier-Stokes equation breaks down on $\mathbb{H}^{2}(-a^{2})$. We also obtain a corresponding result on a more general negatively curved manifold for a modified geometric version of the Navier-Stokes equation. Finally, as a corollary we also show a lack of the Liouville theorem in the hyperbolic setting both in two and three dimensions.
