Gap and out-gap breathers in a binary modulated discrete nonlinear Schrödinger model

We consider a modulated discrete nonlinear Schrödinger (DNLS) model with alternating on-site potential, having a linear spectrum with two branches separated by a 'forbidden' gap. Nonlinear localized time-periodic solutions with frequencies in the gap and near the gap -- discrete gap and out-gap breathers (DGBs and DOGBs) -- are investigated. Their linear stability is studied varying the system parameters from the continuous to the anti-continuous limit, and different types of oscillatory and real instabilities are revealed. It is shown, that generally DGBs in infinite modulated DNLS chains with hard (soft) nonlinearity do not possess any oscillatory instabilities for breather frequencies in the lower (upper) half of the gap. Regimes of 'exchange of stability' between symmetric and antisymmetric DGBs are observed, where an increased breather mobility is expected. The transformation from DGBs to DOGBs when the breather frequency enters the linear spectrum is studied, and the general bifurcation picture for DOGBs with tails of different wave numbers is described. Close to the anti-continuous limit, the localized linear eigenmodes and their corresponding eigenfrequencies are calculated analytically for several gap/out-gap breather configurations, yielding explicit proof of their linear stability or instability close to this limit.

Standing wave instabilities in a chain of nonlinear coupled oscillators

We consider existence and stability properties of nonlinear spatially periodic or quasiperiodic standing waves (SWs) in one-dimensional lattices of coupled anharmonic oscillators. Specifically, we consider Klein-Gordon (KG) chains with either soft (e.g., Morse) or hard (e.g., quartic) on-site potentials, as well as discrete nonlinear Schroedinger (DNLS) chains approximating the small-amplitude dynamics of KG chains with weak inter-site coupling. The SWs are constructed as exact time-periodic multibreather solutions from the anticontinuous limit of uncoupled oscillators. In the validity regime of the DNLS approximation these solutions can be continued into the linear phonon band, where they merge into standard harmonic SWs. For SWs with incommensurate wave vectors, this continuation is associated with an inverse transition by breaking of analyticity. When the DNLS approximation is not valid, the continuation may be interrupted by bifurcations associated with resonances with higher harmonics of the SW. Concerning the stability, we identify one class of SWs which are always linearly stable close to the anticontinuous limit. However, approaching the linear limit all SWs with nontrivial wave vectors become unstable through oscillatory instabilities, persisting for arbitrarily small amplitudes in infinite lattices. Investigating the dynamics resulting from these instabilities, we find two qualitatively different regimes for wave vectors smaller than or larger than pi/2, respectively. In one regime persisting breathers are found, while in the other regime the system rapidly thermalizes.

Decay of DNLS breathers through inelastic multiphonon scattering

We consider the long-time evolution of weakly perturbed discrete nonlinear Schroedinger breathers. While breather growth can occur through nonlinear interaction with one single initial linear mode, breather decay is found to require excitation of at least two independent modes. All growth and decay processes of lowest order are found to disappear for breathers larger than a threshold value.

Oscillatory Instabilities of Standing Waves in One-Dimensional Nonlinear Lattices

In one-dimensional anharmonic lattices, we construct nonlinear standing waves (SWs) reducing to harmonic SWs at small amplitude. For SWs with spatial periodicity incommensurate with the lattice period, a transition by breaking of analyticity versus wave amplitude is observed. As a consequence of the discreteness, oscillatory linear instabilities, persisting for arbitrarily small amplitude in infinite lattices, appear for all wave numbers Q not equal to zero or π. Incommensurate analytic SWs with |Q|>π/2 may however appear as 'quasi-stable', as their instability growth rate is of higher order.

Growth and decay of discrete nonlinear Schroedinger breathers interacting with internal modes or standing-wave phonons

We investigate the long-time evolution of weakly perturbed single-site breathers (localized stationary states) in the discrete nonlinear Schroedinger (DNLS) equation. The perturbations we consider correspond to time-periodic solutions of the linearized equations around the breather, and can be either (i) spatially localized, or (ii) spatially extended. For case (i), which corresponds to the excitation of an internal mode of the breather, we find that the nonlinear interaction between the breather and its internal mode always leads to a slow growth of the breather amplitude and frequency. In case (ii), corresponding to interaction between the breather and a standing-wave phonon, the breather will grow provided that the wave vector of the phonon is such that the generation of radiating higher-harmonics at the breather is possible. In other cases, breather decay is observed. This condition yields a limit value for the breather frequency above which no further growth is possible. We also discuss another mechanism for breather growth and destruction which becomes important when the amplitude of the perturbation is non-negligible, and which originates from the oscillatory instabilities of the nonlinear standing-wave phonons.

Quantum nonlinear lattices and coherent state vectors

Quantized nonlinear lattice models are considered for two different classes, boson and fermionic ones. The quantum discrete nonlinear Schroedinger model (DNLS) is our main objective, but its so called modified discrete nonlinear (MDNLS) version is also included, together with the fermionic polaron (FP) model. Based on the respective dynamical symmetries of the models, a method is put forward which by use of the associated boson and spin coherent state vectors (CSV) and a factorization ansatz for the solution of the Schroedinger equation, leads to quasiclassical Hamiltonian equations of motion for the CSV parameters. Analysing the geometrical content of the factorization ansatz made for the state vectors invokes the study of the Riemannian and symplectic geometry of the CSV manifolds as generalized phase spaces. Next, we investigate analytically and numerically the behavior of mean values and uncertainties of some physically interesting observables as well as the modifications in the quantum regime of processes such as the discrete self trapping (DST), in terms of the Q-function and the distribution of excitation quanta of the lattice sites. Quantum DST in the symmetric ordering of lattice operators is found to be relatively enhanced with respect to the classical DST. Finally, the meaning of the factorization ansatz for the lattice wave function is explained in terms of disregarded quantum correlations, and as a quantitative figure of merit for that ansatz a correlation index is introduced.

Effects of long-range dispersion in nonlinear dynamics of DNA molecules

A discrete nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) model with long-range dispersive interactions describing the dynamical structure of DNA is proposed. Dispersive interactions of two types: the power dependence $r^{-s}$ and the exponential dependence $e^{-βr}$ on the distance, $r$, are studied. For $s$ less than some critical value, $s_{cr}$, and similarly for $β\leq β_{cr}$ there is an interval of bistability where two stable stationary states: narrow, pinned states and broad, mobile states exist at each value of the total energy. For cubic nonlinearity the bistability of the solitons occurs for dipole-dipole dispersive interaction $(s=3)$, and for the inverse radius of the dispersive interaction $β\leq β_{cr}=1.67$. For increasing degree of nonlinearity, $σ$, the critical values $s_{cr}$ and $β_{cr}$ increase. The long-distance behavior of the intrinsically localized states depends on $s$. For $s>3$ their tails are exponential while for $2<s<3$ they are algebraic. A controlled switching between pinned and mobile states is demonstrated applying a spatially symmetric perturbation in the form of a parametric kick. The mechanism could be important for controlling energy storage and transport in DNA molecules.

Models for energy and charge transport and storage in biomolecules

Two models for energy and charge transport and storage in biomolecules are considered. A model based on the discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation with long-range dispersive interactions (LRI's) between base pairs of DNA is offered for the description of nonlinear dynamics of the DNA molecule. We show that LRI's are responsible for the existence of an interval of bistability where two stable stationary states, a narrow, pinned state and a broad, mobile state, coexist at each value of the total energy. The possibility of controlled switching between pinned and mobile states is demonstrated. The mechanism could be important for controlling energy storage and transport in DNA molecules. Another model is offered for the description of nonlinear excitations in proteins and other anharmonic biomolecules. We show that in the highly anharmonic systems a bound state of Davydov and Boussinesq solitons can exist.

Discreteness-Induced Oscillatory Instabilities of Dark Solitons

We reveal that even weak inherent discreteness of a nonlinear model can lead to instabilities of the localized modes it supports. We present the first example of an oscillatory instability of dark solitons, and analyse how it may occur for dark solitons of the discrete nonlinear Schrodinger and generalized Ablowitz-Ladik equations.
