Sparse matrix factorizations for fast linear solvers with application to Laplacian systems

In solving a linear system with iterative methods, one is usually confronted with the dilemma of having to choose between cheap, inefficient iterates over sparse search directions (e.g., coordinate descent), or expensive iterates in well-chosen search directions (e.g., conjugate gradients). In this paper, we propose to interpolate between these two extremes, and show how to perform cheap iterations along non-sparse search directions, provided that these directions can be extracted from a new kind of sparse factorization. For example, if the search directions are the columns of a hierarchical matrix, then the cost of each iteration is typically logarithmic in the number of variables. Using some graph-theoretical results on low-stretch spanning trees, we deduce as a special case a nearly-linear time algorithm to approximate the minimal norm solution of a linear system $Bx= b$ where $B$ is the incidence matrix of a graph. We thereby can connect our results to recently proposed nearly-linear time solvers for Laplacian systems, which emerge here as a particular application of our sparse matrix factorization.

Zero forcing number, constrained matchings and strong structural controllability

The zero forcing number is a graph invariant introduced to study the minimum rank of the graph. In 2008, Aazami proved the NP-hardness of computing the zero forcing number of a simple undirected graph. We complete this NP-hardness result by showing that the non-equivalent problem of computing the zero forcing number of a directed graph allowing loops is also NP-hard. The rest of the paper is devoted to the strong controllability of a networked system. This kind of controllability takes into account only the structure of the interconnection graph, but not the interconnection strengths along the edges. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition in terms of zero forcing sets for the strong controllability of a system whose underlying graph is a directed graph allowing loops. Moreover, we explain how our result differs from a recent related result discovered by Monshizadeh et al. Finally, we show how to solve the problem of finding efficiently a minimum-size input set for the strong controllability of a self-damped system with a tree-structure.

Computing the minimum rank of a loop directed tree

The minimum rank of a graph is the minimum possible rank of a real matrix whose zero-nonzero pattern is described by the graph. The current algorithms can compute efficiently the minimum rank of undirected trees. This paper provides an algorithm to compute in polynomial time the minimum rank of directed trees allowing loops.
