Tight contact structures on hyperbolic homology 3-spheres

We produce a large class of hyperbolic homology 3-spheres admitting arbitrarily many distinct tight contact structures. We also produce a sub-class admitting arbitrarily many distinct tight contact structures within the same homotopy class of oriented plane distributions. As a corollary, we give a recipe to construct hyperbolic L-spaces admitting arbitrarily many distinct tight contact structures. We also introduce a notion of geometric limits of contact structures compatible with geometric limits of hyperbolic manifolds and study the behavior of the tight contact structures we construct under geometric limits.

Commensurated hyperbolic subgroups

We show that if H is a non-elementary hyperbolic commensurated subgroup of infinite index in a hyperbolic group G, then H is virtually a free product of hyperbolic surface groups and free groups. We prove that whenever a one-ended hyperbolic group H is a fiber of a non-trivial hyperbolic bundle then H virtually splits over a 2-ended subgroup.

Cubulating Drilled bundles over graphs

We start with a Gromov-hyperbolic surface bundle $E$ over a graph, and drill out essential simple closed curves from fibers to obtain a drilled bundle $F$. We prove that for such drilled bundles $F$, the fundamental group $π_1(F)$ is relatively hyperbolic with $(\mathbb{Z}\oplus \mathbb{Z})$ peripheral groups. Combining the relative hyperbolicity of $π_1(F)$ thus obtained with a theorem of Wise, we establish virtually special cubulability of $π_1(F)$ provided that the maximal undrilled subbundles of $F$ are cubulable.

Indiscrete Common Commensurators

We develop a framework for common commensurators of discrete subgroups of lattices in isometry groups of CAT(0) spaces. We show that the Greenberg-Shalom hypothesis about discreteness of common commensurators of Zariski dense subgroups and lattices fails in this generality, even if one imposes strong finiteness conditions. We analyze some examples due to Burger and Mozes in this context and show that they have discrete common commensurator.

The Gromov-Tischler theorem for stratified spaces

We define a notion of a symplectic structure on stratified spaces, and demonstrate that given a symplectic structure on a stratified space $X$ with integral cohomology class, $X$ can be symplectically embedded in some complex projective space equipped with the standard Kähler form. This extends a theorem, due to Gromov and Tischler for manifolds, to stratified spaces.

Commensurators of normal subgroups of lattices

We study a question of Greenberg-Shalom concerning arithmeticity of discrete subgroups of semisimple Lie groups with dense commensurators. We answer this question positively for normal subgroups of lattices. This generalizes a result of the second author and T. Koberda for certain normal subgroups of arithmetic lattices in SO(n,1) and SU(n,1).

h-Principle for Stratified Spaces

We extend Gromov and Eliashberg-Mishachev's h-principle on manifolds to stratified spaces. This is done in both the sheaf-theoretic framework of Gromov and the smooth jets framework of Eliashberg-Mishachev. The generalization involves developing 1) the notion of stratified continuous sheaves to extend Gromov's theory, 2) the notion of smooth stratified bundles to extend Eliashberg-Mishachev's theory. A new feature is the role played by homotopy fiber sheaves. We show, in particular, that stratumwise flexibility of stratified continuous sheaves along with flexibility of homotopy fiber sheaves furnishes the parametric h-principle. We extend the Eliashberg-Mishachev holonomic approximation theorem to stratified spaces. We also prove a stratified analog of the Smale-Hirsch immersion theorem.

Commensurators of thin normal subgroups and abelian quotients

We give an affirmative answer to many cases of a question due to Shalom, which asks if the commensurator of a thin subgroup of a Lie group is discrete. In this paper, let $K<Γ<G$ be an infinite normal subgroup of an arithmetic lattice $Γ$ in a rank one simple Lie group $G$, such that the quotient $Q=Γ/K$ is infinite. We show that the commensurator of $K$ in $G$ is discrete, provided that $Q$ admits a surjective homomorphism to $\mathbb{Z}$. In this case, we also show that the commensurator of $K$ contains the normalizer of $K$ with finite index. We thus vastly generalize a result of the authors, which showed that many natural normal subgroups of $\mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$ have discrete commensurator in $\mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{R})$.

Combining Rational maps and Kleinian groups via orbit equivalence

We develop a new orbit equivalence framework for holomorphically mating the dynamics of complex polynomials with that of Kleinian surface groups. We show that the only torsion-free Fuchsian groups that can be thus mated are punctured sphere groups. We describe a new class of maps that are topologically orbit equivalent to Fuchsian punctured sphere groups. We call these higher Bowen-Series maps. The existence of this class ensures that the Teichmüller space of matings has one component corresponding to Bowen-Series maps and one corresponding to higher Bowen-Series maps. We also show that, unlike in higher dimensions, topological orbit equivalence rigidity fails for Fuchsian groups acting on the circle. We also classify the collection of Kleinian Bers boundary groups that are mateable in our framework.

The Sullivan dictionary and Bowen-Series maps

The Sullivan dictionary between Kleinian groups and rational dynamics describes striking similarities between the fields, both in terms of the objects of study as well as the techniques used. We give an expository account of a recent bridge between the two sides of the dictionary by describing a framework for combining a Fuchsian group with a complex polynomial into a single dynamical system on the Riemann sphere.

Combination Theorems in Groups, Geometry and Dynamics

The aim of this article is to give a survey of combination theorems occurring in hyperbolic geometry, geometric group theory and complex dynamics, with a particular focus on Thurston's contribution and influence in the field.

Mixing Properties of Stable Random Fields Indexed by Amenable and Hyperbolic Groups

We show that any stationary symmteric $α$-stable ($SαS$) random field indexed by a countable amenable group $G$ is weakly mixing if and only if it is generated by a null action, extending works of Samorodnitsky and Wang-Roy-Stoev for abelian groups to all amenable groups. This enables us to improve significantly the domain of a recently discovered connection to von Neumann algebras. We also establish ergodicity of stationary $SαS$ fields associated with boundary and double boundary actions of a hyperbolic group $G$, where the boundary is equipped with either the Patterson-Sullivan or the hitting measure of a random walk, and the double boundary is equipped with the Bowen-Margulis-Sullivan measure.

Stable Random Fields, Patterson-Sullivan measures and Extremal Cocycle Growth

We study extreme values of group-indexed stable random fields for discrete groups $G$ acting geometrically on spaces $X$ in the following cases: 1) $G$ acts freely, properly discontinuously by isometries on a CAT(-1) space $X$, 2) $G$ is a lattice in a higher rank Lie group, acting on a symmetric space $X$, 3) $G$ is the mapping class group of a surface acting on its Teichmuller space. The connection between extreme values and the geometric action is mediated by the action of the group $G$ on its limit set equipped with the Patterson-Sullivan measure. Based on motivation from extreme value theory, we introduce an invariant of the action called extremal cocycle growth which measures the distortion of measures on the boundary in comparison to the movement of points in the space $X$ and show that its non-vanishing is equivalent to finiteness of the Bowen-Margulis measure for the associated unit tangent bundle $U(X/G)$ provided $X/G$ has non-arithmetic length spectrum. As a consequence, we establish a dichotomy for the growth-rate of a partial maxima sequence of stationary symmetric $α$-stable ($0 < α< 2$) random fields indexed by groups acting on such spaces. We also establish analogous results for normal subgroups of free groups.

Commutators, commensurators, and $\mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$

Let $H<\mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$ be a finite index normal subgroup which is contained in a principal congruence subgroup, and let $Φ(H)\neq H$ denote a term of the lower central series or the derived series of $H$. In this paper, we prove that the commensurator of $Φ(H)$ in $\mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{R})$ is discrete. We thus obtain a natural family of thin subgroups of $\mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{R})$ whose commensurators are discrete, establishing some cases of a conjecture of Shalom.

Surface group representations in ${\rm SL}_2({\mathbb C})$ with finite mapping class orbits

Given an oriented surface of positive genus with finitely many punctures, we classify the finite orbits of the mapping class group action on the moduli space of semisimple complex special linear two dimensional representations of the fundamental group of the surface. For surfaces of genus at least two, such orbits correspond to homomorphisms with finite image. For genus one, they correspond to the finite or special dihedral representations. We also obtain an analogous result for bounded orbits in the moduli space.

Propagating quasiconvexity from fibers

Let $1 \to K \longrightarrow G \stackrelπ\longrightarrow Q$ be an exact sequence of hyperbolic groups. Let $Q_1 < Q$ be a quasiconvex subgroup and let $G_1=π^{-1}(Q_1)$. Under relatively mild conditions (e.g. if $K$ is a closed surface group or a free group and $Q$ is convex cocompact), we show that infinite index quasiconvex subgroups of $G_1$ are quasiconvex in $G$. Related results are proven for metric bundles, developable complexes of groups, and graphs of groups.

Meromorphic projective structures, grafting and the monodromy map

A meromorphic projective structure on a punctured Riemann surface $X\setminus P$ is determined, after fixing a standard projective structure on $X$, by a meromorphic quadratic differential with poles of order three or more at each puncture in $P$. In this article we prove the analogue of Thurston's grafting theorem for such meromorphic projective structures, that involves grafting crowned hyperbolic surfaces. This also provides a grafting description for projective structures on $\mathbb{C}$ that have polynomial Schwarzian derivatives. As an application of our main result, we prove the analogue of a result of Hejhal, namely, we show that the monodromy map to the decorated character variety (in the sense of Fock-Goncharov) is a local homeomorphism.
