Discrete time crystal order in spin chains enabled by Floquet flat bands

We propose a novel protocol to realize discrete time-crystal (DTC) order in clean, periodically driven spin-$1/2$ chains. In each drive cycle, a global spin flip is followed by a two-tone flat-band segment. This flat-band segment engineers a fully degenerate Floquet quasienergy spectrum, suppresses thermalization, and stabilizes a robust period-doubled subharmonic response. Using exact time evolution, we identify a pronounced subharmonic peak at half the drive frequency in the Fourier spectrum of the order parameter, thereby providing clear evidence for the emergence of stable DTC. The resulting phase is insensitive to system size, interaction strength, and interaction range; however, it remains sensitive to spin-rotation errors ($\varepsilon_r$), which can destabilize the subharmonic response. Compared with disorder-induced many-body localized (MBL) and disorder-free dynamically many-body localized (DMBL) DTCs, we find that the exact flat-band protocol offers a broader tunability of drive parameters, whereas MBL and DMBL based DTCs are more resistant to $\varepsilon_r$. In particular, the $\varepsilon_r$ sensitivity can be suppressed by incorporating additional spin-spin interactions that have modest deviations from the ideal flat-band protocol. This manifests itself in a robust DTC response over a finite window of spin-coupling strengths and drive frequencies. Our results establish flat-band driving as a versatile and experimentally relevant route to DTC order in disorder-free spin systems and motivate further exploration of nonequilibrium phases.

Integrable Floquet Time Crystals in One Dimension

We demonstrate the realization of a Discrete Time-Crystal (DTC) phase in a family of periodically driven, one-dimensional quadratic lattice Hamiltonians that can be obtained using spin chains. These interactions preserve integrability while opening controllable gaps at resonant quasienergies and pinning the emergent quasienergy modes that are responsible for subharmonics. We demonstrate that the DTC phase is rigid in the parameter space of transverse field and an additional interaction like Next-Nearest-Neighbor (NNN) coupling strength, with the drive frequency optimized to produce the strongest subharmonic response. We also provide a detailed phase diagram of the model, exhibiting a Floquet Paramagnet (FPM) phase, as well as sharp quantum phase transitions between the FPM and the DTC. Finite-size scaling of the Floquet quasienergy splitting between the emergent subharmonic mode and its conjugate shows that the DTC lifetime diverges exponentially with system size. Thus, our work establishes a novel mechanism for achieving robust long-lived DTCs in one dimension. Motivation for this work stems from the limitations of disorder-based stabilization schemes that rely on many-body localization and exhibit only prethermal or finite-lived plateaus, eventually restoring ergodicity. Disorder-free routes are therefore highly desirable. Integrable (or Floquet-integrable) systems provide an attractive alternative because their extensive set of conserved quantities and constrained scattering strongly restrict thermalization channels. Our construction exploits these integrable restrictions together with longer-range NNN engineering to produce a clean, robust DTC that avoids the prethermal fragility of disordered realizations.

Time crystal embodies chimeralike state in periodically driven quantum spin system

Chimera states are a captivating occurrence in which a system composed of multiple interconnected elements exhibits a distinctive combination of synchronized and desynchronized behavior. The emergence of these states can be attributed to the complex interdependence between quantum entanglement and the delicate balance of interactions among system constituents. The emergence of discrete-time crystal (DTC) in typical many-body periodically driven systems occurs when there is a breaking of time translation symmetry. Coexisting coupled DTC and a ferromagnetic dynamically many-body localized (DMBL) phase at distinct regions have been investigated under the controlled spin rotational error of a disorder-free spin-1/2 chain for different types of spin-spin interactions. We contribute a novel approach for the emergence of the DTC-DMBL-chimeralike state, which is robust against external static fields in a periodically driven quantum many-body system.

Phase Crossover induced by Dynamical Many Body Localization in Periodically Driven Long-Range Spin Systems

Dynamical many-body freezing occurs in periodic transverse field-driven integrable quantum spin systems. Under freezing conditions, quantum dynamics causes practically infinite hysteresis in the drive response, maintaining its starting value. We find similar resonant freezing in the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick (LMG) model. In the LMG, the freezing conditions in the driving field suppresses the heating postulated by the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) by inducing dynamical many-body localization, or DMBL. This is in contrast to Many Body Localization (MBL), which requires disorder to suppress ETH. DMBL has been validated by the inverse participation ratio (IPR) of the quasistationary Floquet modes. Similarly to the TFIM, the LMG exhibits high-frequency localization only at freezing points. IPR localization in the LMG deteriorates with an inverse system size law at lower frequencies, which indicates heating to infinite temperature. Furthermore, adiabatically increasing frequency and amplitude from low values raises the Floquet state IPR in the LMG from nearly zero to unity, indicating a phase crossover. This occurrence enables a future technique to construct an MBL engine in clean systems that can be cycled by adjusting drive parameters only.
