Synergizing Hyper-accelerated Power Optimization and Wavelength-Dependent QoT-Aware Cross-Layer Design in Next-Generation Multi-Band EONs

The extension of elastic optical networks (EON) to multi-band transmission (MB-EON) shows promise in enhancing spectral efficiency, throughput, and long-term cost-effectiveness for telecom operators. However, designing MB-EON networks introduces complex challenges, notably the optimization of physical parameters like optical power and quality of transmission (QoT). Frequency-dependent characteristics of fiber, such as loss, dispersion, and nonlinear effects, alongside inter-channel stimulated Raman scattering, pose significant hurdles when extending beyond the L+C (LC) band to a continuous spectrum over 100 nm. In this study, we propose a span-by-span methodology for optimal power allocation, introducing two hyper-accelerated power optimization (HPO) strategies: flat launch power (FLP) and flat received power (FRP). These approaches significantly expedite network power optimization while preserving the stability of running services. Our comparative analysis of FLP and FRP models reveals that while FRP has a minimal effect on capacity (increasing less than 10 Tbps for an L+C+S (LCS) system over 100 km), it improves flatness and GSNR/OSNR metrics in the S-band by approximately 2/0 dB and 2.5/6 dB, respectively. A network-wide analysis across various topologies shows that the FRP technique enhances minimum GSNR, contributing to a throughput increase of 12% to 75%, depending on network scale, at a 1% bandwidth blocking rate. Lastly, our application of HPO in MB-EON for both local and global power optimization demonstrates that while both approaches offer comparable performance, global optimization is simpler and more cost-effective for large-scale networks.

Launch Power Optimization in super-(C+L) Systems

We investigate launch power optimization in 12-THz super-(C+L) systems, using iterative performance evaluation enabled by NLI closed-form models. We find that, despite the strong ISRS, these systems tolerate well easy-to-implement suboptimal launch power profiles, with marginal throughput loss.

Launch Power Optimization for Dynamic Elastic Optical Networks over C+L Bands

We propose an algorithm for calculating the optimum launch power over the entire C+L bands by maximizing the cumulative link GSNR of a channel plan built upon multiple modulation formats, with application to dynamic EONs. Exact last-fit spectrum assignment proves to outperform exact first-fit in terms of average GSNR at arrival time.

A GN-model closed-form formula supporting ultra-low fiber loss and short fiber spans

We report on a fully closed-form approximation of the GN model for Nyquist WDM systems that extends the range of applicability of previously available formulas to values of fiber loss and span loss that were not previously covered. In particular, so far, a closed-form formula was available for zero loss, and another for span loss of at least about 7 dB. The new formula is accurate over any fiber loss and any span loss value. The interest for this new formula is varied, ranging from hollow-core fibers to improving modeling of standard systems that present lumped loss along installed spans (such as splices or connectors).

Characterization of the Link Function in GN and EGN methods for Nonlinearity Assessment of Ultrawideband Coherent Fiber Optic Communication Systems with Raman Effect

In this paper, we present an accurate and numerically efficient method to implement the GN and EGN nonlinearity prediction methods when the power evolution along the fiber is in an arbitrary form. This approach will provide us with a reliable tool to efficiently use GN and Enhanced GN (EGN) methods for analysis of the nonlinearity for ultrawideband coherent fiber optic WDM systems (C+L band or even wider bandwidth systems) in the presence of the Inter-channel Stimulated Raman Scattering (ISRS) and systems using forward-pumped or/and backward-pumped Raman amplification.

A Real-Time Closed-Form Model for Nonlinearity Modeling in Ultra-Wide-Band Optical Fiber Links Accounting for Inter-channel Stimulated Raman Scattering and Co-Propagating Raman Amplification

In this paper, we present a novel closed-form model (CFM) for accurate and fast evaluation of nonlinear interference in modern ultrawideband coherent optical fiber communication systems. Starting from the Gaussian noise model (GN model), using reasonable approximations and machine-learning optimized improvements, we achieve an accurate CFM capable of handling ultrawide band (C+L or wider) optical fiber systems in the presence of Inter-channel Stimulated Raman Scattering (ISRS) and forward-pumped Raman amplification.

Accurate Closed-Form Real-Time EGN Model Formula Leveraging Machine-Learning over 8500 Thoroughly Randomized Full C-Band Systems

We derived an approximate non-linear interference (NLI) closed-form model (CFM), capable of handling a very broad range of optical WDM system scenarios. We tested the CFM over 8500 randomized C-band WDM systems, of which 6250 were fully-loaded and 2250 were partially loaded. The systems had highly diversified channel formats, symbol rates, fibers, as well as other parameters. We improved the CFM accuracy by augmenting the formula with simple machine-learning factors, optimized by leveraging the system test-set. We further improvedthe CFM by adding a term which models special situations where NLI has high self-coherence. In the end, we obtained a very good match with the results found using the numerically-integrated Enhanced GN-model (or EGN-model). We also checked the CFM accuracy by comparing its predictions with full-C-Band split-step simulations of 300 randomized systems. The combined high accuracy and very fast computation time (milliseconds) of the CFM potentially make it an effective tool for real-time physical-layer-aware optical network management and control.

A closed-form approximate incoherent GN-model supporting MCI contributions

In this paper, a closed form formula for nonlinearity modeling in modern coherent fiber optic communication systems is derived based on the incoherent GN model. The model covers multi-channel interference (MCI). The effectiveness of the derived formula is shown particularly in near zero dispersion environment. Finally, accuracy of the derived formula is improved by adding correction factors based on a large data test set.

A GN/EGN-Model Real-Time Closed-Form Formula Tested over 7,000 Virtual Links

We derived a fully-closed-form GN-model formula and tested its accuracy of over 7,000 highly randomized Cband system scenarios. By further applying a correction that leverages the large system test-set, we were able to substantially improve it and obtain EGN-model accuracy with real-time-compatible computation effort.

A GN-model closed-form formula considering coherency terms in the Link function and covering all possible islands in 2-D GN integration

Efficient evaluation of nonlinearity in modern coherent optical telecommunication networks is necessary for design, optimization and management. The original GN model formula can not be used in real time applications due to long processing time needed for numerical 2-D integration, particularly when facing with full C band or C+L band. There are closed form approximations of the GN model which has been mathematically derived based on some assumptions which fail in low dispersion regime. In this work, we derive a GN closed form formula without any restrictive assumption capable of handling arbitrary WDM combs and arbitrary link structures in closed form which can be used with a very good accuracy with respect to original GN formula for networks employing both high and low dispersion fibers.

Statistical Modeling and Performance Characterization of an Ultrafast Digital Lightwave Communication System Using a Power-Cubic Optical Nonlinear Preprocessor (Extended Version)

In this paper, we present an analytical approach in obtaining the probability density function (pdf) of the random decision variable Y, formed at the output of power-cubic all-optical nonlinear preprocessor followed by the photodetector. Our approach can be used to accurately evaluate the performance of ultrafast pulse detection in the presence of Gaussian noise. Through rigorous Monte-Carlo simulation, the accuracy of widely used Gaussian approximation of decision variable Y is refuted. However, in this paper we show that the so called Log-Pearson type-3 probability density function (LP3 pdf) is an excellent representation for the decision variable Y . Three distinguishable parameters of the LP3 pdf are obtained through analytical derivation of three moments of the decision variable Y . Furthermore, toward a more realistic model, in addition to ASE Gaussian noise, the effects of shot and thermal noises are also included. Finally, using the presented analytical approach, it is shown that power-cubic preprocessor outperforms its quadratic counterparts, i.e., Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) and Two Photon Absorption (TPA) devices, in high power regime where shot and thermal noises can be neglected.
