A Generalisation of Interlinked Cycle Structures and Their Index Coding Capacity

Cycles and Cliques in a side-information graph reduce the number of transmissions required in an index coding problem. Thapa, Ong and Johnson defined a more general form of overlapping cycles, called the interlinked-cycle (IC) structure, that generalizes cycles and cliques. They proposed a scheme, that leverages IC structures in digraphs to construct scalar linear index codes. In this paper, we extend the notion of interlinked cycle structure to define more generalised graph structures called overlapping interlinked cycle (OIC) structures. We prove the capacity of OIC structures by giving an index code with length equal to the order of maximum acyclic induced subgraph (MAIS) of OIC structures.

Reduced Complexity Index Codes and Improved Upperbound on Broadcast Rate for Neighboring Interference Problems

A single unicast index coding problem (SUICP) with symmetric neighboring interference (SNI) has $K$ messages and $K$ receivers, the $k$th receiver $R_{k}$ wanting the $k$th message $x_{k}$ and having the interference with $D$ messages after and $U$ messages before its desired message. Maleki, Cadambe and Jafar studied SUICP(SNI) because of its importance in topological interference management problems. Maleki \textit{et. al.} derived the lowerbound on the broadcast rate of this setting to be $D+1$. In our earlier work, for SUICP(SNI) with arbitrary $K,D$ and $U$, we defined set $\mathbf{S}$ of 2-tuples and for every $(a,b) \in \mathbf{S}$, we constructed $b$-dimensional vector linear index code with rate $D+1+\frac{a}{b}$ by using an encoding matrix of dimension $Kb \times (b(D+1)+a)$. In this paper, we use the symmetric structure of the SUICP(SNI) to reduce the size of encoding matrix by partitioning the message symbols. The rate achieved in this paper is same as that of the existing constructions of vector linear index codes. More specifically, we construct $b$-dimensional vector linear index codes for SUICP(SNI) by partitioning the $Kb$ messages into $b(U+1)+c$ sets for some non-negative integer $c$. We use an encoding matrix of size $\frac{Kb}{b(U+1)+c} \times \frac{b(D+1)+a}{b(U+1)+c}$ to encode each partition separately. The advantage of this method is that the receivers need to store atmost $\frac{b(D+1)+a}{b(U+1)+c}$ number of broadcast symbols (index code symbols) to decode a given wanted message symbol. We also give a construction of scalar linear index codes for SUICP(SNI) with arbitrary $K,D$ and $U$. We give an improved upperbound on the braodcast rate of SUICP(SNI).

A Relation Between Weight Enumerating Function and Number of Full Rank Sub-matrices

In most of the network coding problems with $k$ messages, the existence of binary network coding solution over $\mathbb{F}_2$ depends on the existence of adequate sets of $k$-dimensional binary vectors such that each set comprises of linearly independent vectors. In a given $k \times n$ ($n \geq k$) binary matrix, there exist ${n}\choose{k}$ binary sub-matrices of size $k \times k$. Every possible $k \times k$ sub-matrix may be of full rank or singular depending on the columns present in the matrix. In this work, for full rank binary matrix $\mathbf{G}$ of size $k \times n$ satisfying certain condition on minimum Hamming weight, we establish a relation between the number of full rank sub-matrices of size $k \times k$ and the weight enumerating function of the error correcting code with $\mathbf{G}$ as the generator matrix. We give an algorithm to compute the number of full rank $k \times k$ submatrices.

A Field-Size Independent Code Construction for Groupcast Index Coding Problems

The length of an optimal scalar linear index code of a groupcast index coding problem is equal to the minrank of its side information hypergraph. The side-information hypergraph becomes a side-information graph for a special class of groupcast index coding problems known as unicast index coding problems. The computation of minrank is an NP-hard problem. There exists a low rank matrix completion method and clique cover method to find suboptimal solutions to the index coding problem represented by a side-information graph. However, both the methods are NP-hard. The number of computations required to find the minrank depends on the number of edges present in the side-information graph. In this paper, we define the notion of minrank-critical edges in a side-information graph and derive some properties of minrank, which identifies minrank-non-critical edges. Using these properties we present a method for reduction of the given minrank computation problem into a smaller problem. Also, we give an heuristic algorithm to find a clique cover of the side-information graph by using some binary operations on the adjacency matrix of the side-information graph. We also give a method to convert a groupcast index coding problem into a single unicast index coding problem. Combining all these results, we construct index codes (not necessarily optimal length) for groupcast index coding problems. The construction technique is independent of field size and hence can be used to construct index codes over binary field. In some cases the constructed index codes are better than the best known in the literature both in terms of the length of the code and the minimum field size required.

Optimal Scalar Linear Index Codes for Symmetric and Neighboring Side-information Problems

A single unicast index coding problem (SUICP) is called symmetric neighboring and consecutive (SNC) side-information problem if it has $K$ messages and $K$ receivers, the $k$th receiver $R_{k}$ wanting the $k$th message $x_{k}$ and having the side-information $D$ messages immediately after $x_k$ and $U$ ($D\geq U$) messages immediately before $x_k$. Maleki, Cadambe and Jafar obtained the capacity of this SUICP(SNC) and proposed $(U+1)$-dimensional optimal length vector linear index codes by using Vandermonde matrices. However, for a $b$-dimensional vector linear index code, the transmitter needs to wait for $b$ realizations of each message and hence the latency introduced at the transmitter is proportional to $b$. For any given single unicast index coding problem (SUICP) with the side-information graph $G$, MAIS($G$) is used to give a lowerbound on the broadcast rate of the ICP. In this paper, we derive MAIS($G$) of SUICP(SNC) with side-information graph $G$. We construct scalar linear index codes for SUICP(SNC) with length $\left \lceil \frac{K}{U+1} \right \rceil - \left \lfloor \frac{D-U}{U+1} \right \rfloor$. We derive the minrank($G$) of SUICP(SNC) with side-information graph $G$ and show that the constructed scalar linear index codes are of optimal length for SUICP(SNC) with some combinations of $K,D$ and $U$. For SUICP(SNC) with arbitrary $K,D$ and $U$, we show that the length of constructed scalar linear index codes are atmost two index code symbols per message symbol more than the broadcast rate. The given results for SUICP(SNC) are of practical importance due to its relation with topological interference management problem in wireless communication networks.

On the Broadcast Rate of Index Coding Problems with Symmetric and Consecutive Interference

A single unicast index coding problem (SUICP) with symmetric and consecutive interference (SCI) has $K$ messages and $K$ receivers, the $k$th receiver $R_k$ wanting the $k$th message $x_k$ and having interference $\mathcal{I}_k= \{x_{k-U-m},\dots,x_{k-m-2},x_{k-m-1}\}\cup\{x_{k+m+1}, x_{k+m+2},\dots,x_{k+m+D}\}$ and side-information $\mathcal{K}_k=(\mathcal{I}_k \cup x_k)^c$. In this paper, we derive a lowerbound on the broadcast rate of single unicast index coding problem with symmetric and consecutive interference (SUICP(SCI)). In the SUICP(SCI), if $m=0$, we refer this as single unicast index coding problem with symmetric and neighboring interference (SUICP(SNI)). In our previous work\cite{VaR5}, we gave the construction of near-optimal vector linear index codes for SUICP(SNI) with arbitrary $K,D,U$. In this paper, we convert the SUICP(SCI) into SUICP(SNI) and give the construction of near-optimal vector linear index codes for SUICP(SCI) with arbitrary $K,U,D$ and $m$. The constructed codes are independent of field size. The near-optimal vector linear index codes of SUICP(SNI) is a special case of near-optimal vector linear index codes constructed in this paper for SUICP(SCI) with $m=0$. In our previous work\cite{VaR6}, we derived an upperbound on broadcast rate of SUICP(SNI). In this paper, we give an upperbound on the broadcast rate of SUICP(SCI) by using our earlier result on the upperbound on the broadcast rate of SUICP(SNI). We derive the capacity of SUICP(SCI) for some special cases.

Reduced Dimensional Optimal Vector Linear Index Codes for Index Coding Problems with Symmetric Neighboring and Consecutive Side-information

A single unicast index coding problem (SUICP) with symmetric neighboring and consecutive side-information (SNCS) has $K$ messages and $K$ receivers, the $k$th receiver $R_k$ wanting the $k$th message $x_k$ and having the side-information $\mathcal{K}_k=\{x_{k-U},\dots,x_{k-2},x_{k-1}\}\cup\{x_{k+1}, x_{k+2},\dots,x_{k+D}\}$. The single unicast index coding problem with symmetric neighboring and consecutive side-information, SUICP(SNCS), is motivated by topological interference management problems in wireless communication networks. Maleki, Cadambe and Jafar obtained the symmetric capacity of this SUICP(SNCS) and proposed optimal length codes by using Vandermonde matrices. In our earlier work, we gave optimal length $(U+1)$-dimensional vector linear index codes for SUICP(SNCS) satisfying some conditions on $K,D$ and $U$ \cite{VaR1}. In this paper, for SUICP(SNCS) with arbitrary $K,D$ and $U$, we construct optimal length $\frac{U+1}{\text{gcd}(K,D-U,U+1)}$-dimensional vector linear index codes. We prove that the constructed vector linear index code is of minimal dimension if $\text{gcd}(K-D+U,U+1)$ is equal to $\text{gcd}(K,D-U,U+1)$. The proposed construction gives optimal length scalar linear index codes for the SUICP(SNCS) if $(U+1)$ divides both $K$ and $D-U$. The proposed construction is independent of field size and works over every field. We give a low-complexity decoding for the SUICP(SNCS). By using the proposed decoding method, every receiver is able to decode its wanted message symbol by simply adding some index code symbols (broadcast symbols).

A New Upperbound on the Broadcast Rate of Index Coding Problems with Symmetric Neighboring Interference

A single unicast index coding problem (SUICP) with symmetric neighboring interference (SNI) has equal number of $K$ messages and $K$ receivers, the $k$th receiver $R_{k}$ wanting the $k$th message $x_{k}$ and having the side-information $\mathcal{K}_{k}=(\mathcal{I}_{k} \cup x_{k})^c,$ where ${I}_k= \{x_{k-U},\dots,x_{k-2},x_{k-1}\}\cup\{x_{k+1}, x_{k+2},\dots,x_{k+D}\}$ is the interference with $D$ messages after and $U$ messages before its desired message. The single unicast index coding problem with symmetric neighboring interference (SUICP-SNI) is motivated by topological interference management problems in wireless communication networks. Maleki, Cadambe and Jafar obtained the capacity of this SUICP-SNI with $K$ tending to infinity and Blasiak, Kleinberg and Lubetzky for the special case of $(D=U=1)$ with $K$ being finite. Finding the capacity of the SUICP-SNI for arbitrary $K,D$ and $U$ is a challenging open problem. In our previous work, for an SUICP-SNI with arbitrary $K,D$ and $U$, we defined a set $\mathcal{\mathbf{S}}$ of $2$-tuples such that for every $(a,b)$ in that set $\mathcal{\mathbf{S}}$, the rate $D+1+\frac{a}{b}$ is achieved by using vector linear index codes over every finite field. In this paper, we give an algorithm to find the values of $a$ and $b$ such that $(a,b) \in \mathcal{\mathbf{S}}$ and $\frac{a}{b}$ is minimum. We present a new upperbound on the broadcast rate of SUICP-SNI and prove that this upper bound coincides with the existing results on the exact value of the capacity of SUICP-SNI in the respective settings.

Near-Optimal Vector Linear Index Codes For Single Unicast Index Coding Problems with Symmetric Neighboring Interference

Maleki, Cadambe and Jafar obtained the capacity of this single unicast index coding problem with symmetric neighboring interference (SUICP-SNI) with $K$ tending to infinity and Blasiak, Kleinberg and Lubetzky for the special case of $(D=U=1)$ with $K$ being finite. In our previous work, we proved the capacity of SUICP-SNI for arbitrary $K$ and $D$ with $U=\text{gcd}(K,D+1)-1$. This paper deals with near-optimal linear code construction for SUICP-SNI with arbitrary $K,U$ and $D.$ For SUICP-SNI with arbitrary $K,U$ and $D$, we define a set of $2$-tuples such that for every $(a,b)$ in that set the rate $D+1+\frac{a}{b}$ is achieved by using vector linear index codes over every field. We prove that the set $\mathcal{\mathbf{S}}$ consists of $(a,b)$ such that the rate of constructed vector linear index codes are at most $\frac{K~\text{mod}~(D+1)}{\left \lfloor \frac{K}{D+1} \right \rfloor}$ away from a known lower bound on broadcast rate of SUICP-SNI. The three known results on the exact capacity of the SUICP-SNI are recovered as special cases of our results. Also, we give a low complexity decoding procedure for the proposed vector linear index codes for the SUICP-SNI.

Capacity of Some Index Coding Problems with Symmetric Neighboring Interference

Maleki, Cadambe and Jafar obtained the capacity of this symmetric neighboring interference single unicast index coding problem (SNI-SUICP) with $(K)$ tending to infinity and Blasiak, Kleinberg and Lubetzky for the special case of $(D=U=1)$ with $K$ being finite. In this work, for any finite $K$ and arbitrary $D$ we obtain the capacity for the case $U=gcd(K,D+1)-1.$ Our proof is constructive, i.e., we give an explicit construction of a linear index code achieving the capacity.

Low-Complexity Decoding for Symmetric, Neighboring and Consecutive Side-information Index Coding Problems

The capacity of symmetric, neighboring and consecutive side-information single unicast index coding problems (SNC-SUICP) with number of messages equal to the number of receivers was given by Maleki, Cadambe and Jafar. For these index coding problems, an optimal index code construction by using Vandermonde matrices was proposed. This construction requires all the side-information at the receivers to decode their wanted messages and also requires large field size. In an earlier work, we constructed binary matrices of size $m \times n (m\geq n)$ such that any $n$ adjacent rows of the matrix are linearly independent over every field. Calling these matrices as Adjacent Independent Row (AIR) matrices using which we gave an optimal scalar linear index code for the one-sided SNC-SUICP for any given number of messages and one-sided side-information. By using Vandermonde matrices or AIR matrices, every receiver needs to solve $K-D$ equations with $K-D$ unknowns to obtain its wanted message, where $K$ is the number of messages and $D$ is the size of the side-information. In this paper, we analyze some of the combinatorial properties of the AIR matrices. By using these properties, we present a low-complexity decoding which helps to identify a reduced set of side-information for each users with which the decoding can be carried out. By this method every receiver is able to decode its wanted message symbol by simply adding some index code symbols (broadcast symbols). We explicitly give both the reduced set of side-information and the broadcast messages to be used by each receiver to decode its wanted message. For a given pair or receivers our decoding identifies which one will perform better than the other when the broadcast channel is noisy.

Optimal Scalar Linear Index Codes for One-Sided Neighboring Side-Information Problems

The capacity of symmetric instance of the multiple unicast index coding problem with neighboring antidotes (side-information) with number of messages equal to the number of receivers was given by Maleki \textit{et al.} In this paper, we construct matrices of size $ m \times n (m \geq n)$ over $F_q$ such that any $n$ adjacent rows of the matrix are linearly independent. By using such matrices, we give an optimal scalar linear index codes over $F_q$ for the symmetric one-sided antidote problems considered by Maleki \textit{et al.} for any given number of messages and one-sided antidotes. The constructed codes are independent of field size and hence works over every field.

Optimal Vector Linear Index Codes for Some Symmetric Side Information Problems

This paper deals with vector linear index codes for multiple unicast index coding problems where there is a source with K messages and there are K receivers each wanting a unique message and having symmetric (with respect to the receiver index) two-sided antidotes (side information). Optimal scalar linear index codes for several such instances of this class of problems for one-sided antidotes(not necessarily adjacent) have already been reported. These codes can be viewed as special cases of the symmetric unicast index coding problems discussed by Maleki, Cadambe and Jafar with one sided adjacent antidotes. In this paper, starting from a given multiple unicast index coding problem with with K messages and one-sided adjacent antidotes for which a scalar linear index code $\mathfrak{C}$ is known, we give a construction procedure which constructs a sequence (indexed by m) of multiple unicast index problems with two-sided adjacent antidotes (for the same source) for all of which a vector linear code $\mathfrak{C}^{(m)}$ is obtained from $\mathfrak{C}.$ Also, it is shown that if $\mathfrak{C}$ is optimal then $\mathfrak{C}^{(m)}$ is also optimal for all $m.$ We illustrate our construction for some of the known optimal scalar linear codes.

A Lifting Construction for Scalar Linear Index Codes

This paper deals with scalar linear index codes for canonical multiple unicast index coding problems where there is a source with K messages and there are K receivers each wanting a unique message and having symmetric (with respect to the receiver index) antidotes (side information). Optimal scalar linear index codes for several such instances of this class of problems have been reported in \cite{MRRarXiv}. These codes can be viewed as special cases of the symmetric unicast index coding problems discussed in \cite{MCJ}. In this paper a lifting construction is given which constructs a sequence of multiple unicast index problems starting from a given multiple unicast index coding problem. Also, it is shown that if an optimal scalar linear index code is known for the problem given starting problem then optimal scalar linear index codes can be obtained from the known code for all the problems arising from the proposed lifting construction. For several of the known classes of multiple unicast problems our construction is used to obtain several sequences of multiple unicast problem with optimal scalar linear index codes.

Optimal Scalar Linear Index Codes for Some Symmetric Multiple Unicast Problems

The capacity of symmetric instance of the multiple unicast index coding problem with neighboring antidotes (side-information) with number of messages equal to the number of receivers was given by Maleki, Cadambe and Jafar. In this paper we consider ten symmetric multiple unicast problems with lesser antidotes than considered by them and explicitly construct scalar linear codes for these problems. These codes are shown to achieve the capacity or equivalently these codes shown to be of optimal length. Also, the constructed codes enable the receivers use small number of transmissions to decode their wanted messages which is important to have the probability of message error reduced in a noisy broadcast channel. Some of the cases considered are shown to be critical index coding problems and these codes help to identify some of the subclasses considered by others to be not critical index coding problems.
