Zero modes of tight binding electrons on the honeycomb lattice

Tight binding electrons on the honeycomb lattice are studied where nearest neighbor hoppings in the three directions are $t_a,t_b$ and $t_c$, respectively. For the isotropic case, namely for $t_a=t_b=t_c$, two zero modes exist where the energy dispersions at the vanishing points are linear in momentum $k$. Positions of zero modes move in the momentum space as $t_a,t_b$ and $t_c$ are varied. It is shown that zero modes exist if $||\frac{t_b}{t_a}| -1| \leq |\frac{t_c}{t_a}| \leq ||\frac{t_b}{t_a}|+1|$. The density of states near a zero mode is proportional to $|E|$ but it is propotional to $\sqrt{|E|}$ at the boundary of this condition.

Critical Spectra and Wavefunctions of a One-dimensional Quasiperiodic System

We numerically study a one dimensional quasiperiodic system obtained from two dimensional electrons on the triangular lattice in a uniform magnetic field aided by the multifractal method. The phase diagram consists of three phases: two metallic phases and one insulating phase separated by critical lines with one bicritical point. Novel transitions between the two metallic phases exist. We examine the spectra and the wavefunctions along the critical lines. Several types of level statistics are obtained. Distributions of the band widths $P_B(w)$ near the origin (in the tail) %around the origin (in the tail) have a form $P_B(w) \sim w^β$ ($P_B(w) \sim e^{-γw}$) ($β, γ> 0 $), while at the bicritical point $P_B(w) \sim w^{-β'}$ ($β'>0$). Also distributions of the level spacings follow an inverse power law $P_G(s) \sim s^{- δ}$ ($δ> 0$). For the wavefunctions at the centers of spectra, scaling exponents and their distribution in terms of the $α$-$f(α)$-curve are obtained. The results in the vicinity of critical points are consistent with the phase diagram.

Pump process of the rotatory molecular motor and its energy efficiency

The pump process of the ratchet model inspired by the $F_o$ rotatory motor of ATP synthase is investigated. In this model there are two kinds of characteristic time. One is dynamical, the relaxation time of the system. Others are chemical, the chemical reaction rates at which a proton binds to or dissociates from the motor protein. The inequalities between them affect the behavior of the physical quantities, such as the rotation velocity and the proton pumping rates across the membrane. The energy transduction efficiency is calculated and the condition under which the efficiency can become higher is discussed. The proton pumping rate and the efficiency have a peak where a certain set of inequalities between the chemical reaction rates and the reciprocal of the relaxation time holds. The efficiency also has a peak for a certain value of the load. The best efficiency condition for the pump process is consistent with that for the motor process.

Propagation of Light in Cantor Media

We numerically find that transmission coefficients have a rich structure as a function of wavelength in Cantor media. Complete transmission and complete reflection are observed. We also find that light propagation has scalings with respect to number of layers.

Critical Level Statistics of the Fibonacci Model

We numerically analyze spectral properties of the Fibonacci model which is a one-dimensional quasiperiodic system. We find that the energy levels of this model have the distribution of the band widths $w$ obeys $P_B(w)\sim w^α$ $(w\to 0)$ and $P_B(w) \sim e^{-βw}$ $(w\to\infty)$, the gap distribution $P_G(s)\sim s^{-δ}$ $(s\to 0)$ ($α,β,δ>0$) . We also compare the results with those of multi-scale Cantor sets. We find qualitative differences between the spectra of the Fibonacci model and the multi-scale Cantor sets.

Motion of rotatory molecular motor and chemical reaction rate

We examine the dependence of the physical quantities of the rotatory molecular motor, such as the rotation velocity and the proton translocation rate, on the chemical reaction rate using the model based only on diffusion process. A peculiar behavior of proton translocation is found and the energy transduction efficiency of the motor protein is enhanced by this behavior. We give a natural explanation that this behavior is universal when certain inequalities between chemical reaction rates hold. That may give a clue to examine whether the motion of the molecular motor is dominated by diffusion process or not.

On Berry Phase in Bloch States

We comment on the relation between Berry phase and quantized Hall conductivities for charge and spin currents in some Bloch states, such as Bloch electrons in the presence of electromagnetic fields and quasiparticles in the vortex states of superfluid $^3$He. One can find out that the arguments presented here are closely related to the spontaneous polarization in crystalline dielectrics and the adiabatic pumping.

Berry phase and spin quantum Hall effect in the vortex state of superfluid He3 in two dimensions

We show that the spin quantum Hall effect in the vortex state of two-dimensional rotating superfluid He3 can be described as an adiabatic spin transport of Bloch quasiparticles. We show that the spin Hall conductivity is written by the Berry phase as well as the Chern number. The results have similarity to the adiabatic pumping of Bloch electrons and the spontaneous polarization in crystalline dielectrics.

Triplet superconductivity induced by screened phonon interactions in ferromagnetic compounds

We propose that screened pairing interactions mediated by phonons could give rise to a spin triplet superconductivity in ferromagnetic compounds such as UGe_2. It is pointed out that the pairing interactions include anisotropic components such as those of p, d, f-waves in addition to dominant s-wave component due to the momentum dependence. Since the ferromagnetic long-range order coexists, there is a large splitting of the Fermi surfaces of up and down spin electrons, which suppresses singlet pairing. Therefore, triplet pairing occurs at last due to the sub-dominant anisotropic interactions, even in the absence of magnetic contribution to the pairing interactions.

Anisotropic superconductivity mediated by phonons in layered compounds with weak screening effect

Anisotropic pairing interactions mediated by phonons are examined in layer systems. It is shown that the screening effects become weaker when the layer spacing increases. Then the anisotropic components of the pairing interactions increase with the screening length since the momentum dependence changes. As a result, various types of anisotropic superconductivity occur depending on the parameter region. For example, p-wave superconductivity occurs when the short-range part of Coulomb repulsion is strong and the layer spacing is large. Two kinds of inter-layer pairing may occur when the layer spacing is not too large. Although the phonon contribution to the d-wave pairing interaction is weaker than the p-wave interaction, it increases with the layer spacing. Relevance of the present results to organic superconductors, high-T_c cuprates, and Sr_2RuO_4 is discussed.

Enhancement of superconductive critical temperatures in almost empty or full bands in two dimensions: possible relevance to beta-HfNCl, C60 and MgB2

We examine possibility of enhancement of superconductive critical temperature in two-dimensions. The weak coupling BCS theory is applied, especially when the Fermi level is near the edges of the electronic bands. The attractive interaction depends on ${\bf k}$ due to screening. The density of states(DOS) does not have a peak near the bottom of the band, but $k$-dependent contribution to DOS (electron density on the Fermi surface) has a diverging peak at the bottom or top. These features lead to significant enhancement of the critical temperatures. The results are qualitatively consistent with the superconductive behaviors of HfNCl ($\Tc \le 25K$) and ZrNCl($\Tc \le 15K$), C$_{60}$ with a field-effect transistor configuration ($\Tc = 52K$), and MgB$_2$ ($\Tc \approx 40K$) which have the unexpectedly high superconductive critical transition temperatures.

Pseudogap due to antiferromagnetic fluctuations and the phase diagram of the high temperature oxide superconductors

A reduction of the density of states near the Fermi energy in the normal state (pseudogap) of high-temperature oxide superconductors is examined on the basis of the two-dimensional tight-binding model with effective interactions due to antiferromagnetic fluctuations. By using antiferromagnetic correlation lengths which are phenomenologically assumed, the doping dependence of the pseudogap is obtained. The superconducting transition temperature decreases and eventually vanishes due to the pseudogap as the hole concentration is reduced.

Unconventional odd-parity superconductivity in the ladder compounds

Superconductive properties of the two-leg ladder compounds are studied theoretically. The antiferromagnetic fluctuations are considered because of the good nesting of the Fermi surfaces. The attractive interaction which is most likely due to the electron-phonon coupling is also taken into account. Under this circumstance, it is shown that the superconductivity has two sets of spin-triplet pairings. The gaps for both pairings have no node.

Mechanism of spin-triplet superconductivity in Sr2RuO4

The unique Fermi surfaces and their nesting properties of Sr2RuO4 are considered. The existence of unconventional superconductivity is shown microscopically, for the first time, from the magnetic interactions (due to nesting) and the phonon-mediated interactions. The odd-parity superconductivity is favored in the $α$ and $β$ sheets of the Fermi surface, and the various superconductivities are possible in the $γ$ sheet. There are a number of possible odd-parity gaps, which include the gaps with nodes, the breaking of time-reversal symmetry and $\vec{d}\parallel \hat{z}$.

High temperature superconductivity from the two-dimensional semiconductors without magnetism

We examine the possibility of high temperature superconductivity from two-dimensional semiconductor without antiferromagnetic fluctuations. The weak coupling BCS theory is applied, especially where the Fermi level is near the bottom of the conduction band. Due to screening, the attractive interaction is local in k-space. The density of states(DOS) does not have a peak near the bottom of the band, but k-dependent contribution to DOS has a diverging peak at the bottom. These features lead to high temperature superconductivity which may explain the possible superconductivity of WO_3.

Spin-triplet superconductivity in quasi-one dimension

We consider a system with electron-phonon interaction, antiferromagnetic fluctuations and disconnected open Fermi surfaces. The existence of odd-parity superconductivity in this circumstance is shown for the first time. If it is applied to the quasi-one-dimensional systems like the organic conductors (TMTSF)_2X we obtain spin-triplet superconductivity with nodeless gap. Our result is also valid in higher dimensions(2d and 3d).

Phase transition between d-wave and anisotropic s-wave gaps in high temperature oxides superconductors

We study models for superconductivity with two interactions: $V^>$ due to antiferromagnetic(AF) fluctuations and $V^<$ due to phonons, in a weak coupling approach to the high temperature superconductivity. The nature of the two interactions are considerably different; $V^>$ is positive and sharply peaked at ($\pmπ$,$ \pmπ$) while $V^<$ is negative and peaked at ($0,0$) due to weak phonon screening. We numerically find (a) weak BCS attraction is enough to have high critical temperature if a van Hove anomaly is at work, (b) $V^>$ (AF) is important to give d-wave superconductivity, (c) the gap order parameter $Δ({\bf k})$ is constant(s-wave) at extremely overdope region and it changes to anisotropic s-wave as doping is reduced, (d) there exists a first order phase transition between d-wave and anisotropic s-wave gaps. These results are qualitatively in agreement with preceding works; they should be modified in the strongly underdope region by the presence of antiferromagnetic fluctuations and ensuing AF pseudogap.

Novel vortex lattice transition in d-wave superconductors

We study the vortex state in a magnetic field parallel to the $c$ axis in the framework of the extended Ginzburg Landau equation. We find the vortex acquires a fourfold modulation proportional to $\cos(4ϕ)$ where $ϕ$ is the angle ${\bf r}$ makes with the $a$-axis. This term gives rise to an attractive interaction between two vortices when they are aligned parallel to $(1,1,0)$ or $(1,-1,0)$. We predict the first order vortex lattice transition at $B=H_{cr}\sim κ^{-1} H_{c2}(t)$ from triangular into the square lattice tilted by $45^\circ$ from the $a$ axis. This gives the critical field $H_{cr}$ a few Tesla for YBCO and Bi2212 monocrystals at low temperatures ($T\leq 10 K$).
