Interaction of phonons with discrete breather in strained graphene

We numerically analyze the interaction of small-amplitude phonon waves with standing gap discrete breather (DB) in strained graphene. To make the system support gap DB, strain is applied to create a gap in the phonon spectrum. We only focus on the in-plane phonons and DB, so the issue is investigated under a quasi-one-dimensional setup. It is found that, for the longitudinal sound waves having frequencies below 6 THz, DB is transparent and thus no radiation of energy from DB takes place; whereas for those sound waves with higher frequencies within the acoustic (optical) phonon band, phonon is mainly transmitted (reflected) by DB, and concomitantly, DB radiates its energy when interacting with phonons. The latter case is supported by the fact that, the sum of the transmitted and reflected phonon energy densities is noticeably higher than that of the incident wave. Our results here may provide insight into energy transport in graphene when the spatially localized nonlinear vibration modes are presented.

Energy transfer in strained graphene assisted by discrete breathers excited by external ac driving

In the present molecular dynamics study, external ac driving is used at frequencies outside the phonon spectrum to excite gap DBs in uniformly strained graphene nanoribbon. Harmonic displacement or harmonic force is applied to a zigzag atomic chain of graphene. In the former case non-propagating DBs are excited on the atoms next to the driven atoms, while in the latter case the excited DBs propagate along the nanoribbon. The energy transfer along the nanoribbon assisted by the DBs is investigated in detail and the differences between harmonic displacement driving and harmonic force driving are discussed. It is concluded that the amplitude of external driving at out of phonon spectrum frequencies should not necessarily be large to obtain a noticeable energy transfer to the system. Overall, our results suggest that external harmonic driving even at relatively small driving amplitudes can be used to control excitation of DBs and consequently the energy transfer to the system.

Electrically Engineered Band Gap in Two-Dimensional Ge, Sn, and Pb: A First-Principles and Tight-Binding Approach

First-principles calculations were performed to investigate the electronic structure of two-dimensional (2-D) Ge, Sn, and Pb without and with the presence of an external electric field in combination with spin-orbit coupling. Tight-binding calculations based on four orbitals per atom and an effective single orbital are presented to match with the results obtained from first-principles calculations. In particular, the electronic band structure and the band splitting are investigated with both models. Moreover, the simple $k\cdot p$ model is also considered in order to understand the band splitting in the presence of an external electric field and spin-orbit coupling. A large splitting is obtained, which is expected to be useful for spintronic devices. The fair agreement between the first-principle, $k\cdot p$ model, and tight-binding approaches leads to a table of parameters for future tight-binding studies on hexagonal 2-D nanostructures. By using the tight binding parameters, the transport properties of typical 0-D triangular quantum dots between two semi-infinite electrodes in the presence of spin-orbit coupling are addressed.
