Superconductivity beyond Pauli's limit in bulk NbS2: Evidence for the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state

We present magnetic torque, specific heat and thermal expansion measurements combined with a piezo rotary positioner of the bulk transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) superconductor NbS2 in high magnetic fields applied strictly parallel to its layer structure. The upper critical field of superconducting TMDs in the 2D form is known to be dramatically enhanced by a special form of Ising spin orbit coupling. This Ising superconductivity is very robust against the Pauli limit for superconductivity. We find that superconductivity beyond the Pauli limit still exists in bulk single crystals of NbS2. However, the comparison of our upper critical field transition line with numerical simulations rather points to the development of a Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state above the Pauli limit as a cause. This is also consistent with the observation of a magnetic field driven phase transition in the thermodynamic quantities within the superconducting state near the Pauli limit.

Crystal structure and phase transitions at high pressures in the superconductor FeSe0.89S0.11

We report on the structural phase transitions in the S doped FeSe superconductor by powder synchrotron X ray diffraction at high pressures up to 18.5 GPa under compression and decompression modes. In order to create high quasi hydrostatic pressures, diamond anvil cells filled with helium as a pressure transmitting medium were used. It was found that at ambient pressure and room temperature, S doped FeSe has a tetragonal structure. Under compression, in the region of 10 GPa, a phase transition from the tetragonal into the orthorhombic structure is observed, which persists up to 18.5 GPa. Our results strongly suggest that, at decompression, as the applied pressure decreases to 6 GPa and then is completely removed, most of the sample recrystallizes into the hexagonal phase of the structural type NiAs. However, the other part of the sample remains in the high pressure orthorhombic phase, while the tetragonal phase is not restored. These observations illustrate a strong hysteresis of the structural properties of S doped FeSe during a phase transition under pressure.

Growth of Transition Metal Dichalcogenides by Solvent Evaporation Technique

Due to their physical properties and potential applications in energy conversion and storage, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have garnered substantial interest in recent years. Amongst this class of materials, TMDs based on molybdenum, tungsten, sulfur and selenium are particularly attractive due to their semiconducting properties and the availability of bottom-up synthesis techniques. Here we report a method which yields high quality crystals of transition metal diselenide and ditelluride compounds (PtTe2, PdTe2, NiTe2, TaTe2, TiTe2, RuTe2, PtSe2, PdSe2, NbSe2, TiSe2, VSe2, ReSe2) from their solid solutions, via vapor deposition from a metal-saturated chalcogen melt. Additionally, we show the synthesis of rare-earth metal poly-chalcogenides and NbS2 crystals using the aforementioned process. Most of the obtained crystals have a layered CdI2 structure. We have investigated the physical properties of selected crystals and compared them to state-of-the-art findings reported in the literature. Remarkably, the charge density wave transition in 1T-TiSe2 and 2H-NbSe2 crystals is well-defined at TCDW ~ 200 K and ~ 33 K, respectively. Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and electron diffraction are used to directly access the electronic and crystal structures of PtTe2 single crystals, and yield state-of-the-art measurements.

Magnetic phase diagram and magneto-elastic coupling of NiTiO3

We report high-resolution dilatometry on high-quality single crystals of NiTiO3 grown by means of the optical floating-zone technique. The anisotropic magnetic phase diagram is constructed from thermal expansion and magnetostriction studies up to B=15T and magnetization studies in static (15T) and pulsed (60T) magnetic fields. Our data allow to quantitatively study magneto-elastic coupling and to determine uniaxial pressure dependencies. While the entropy changes are found to be of magnetic nature, Grüneisen analysis implies only one relevant energy scale in the whole low-temperature regime. Thereby, our data suggest that the observed structural changes due to magneto-elastic coupling and previously reported magnetodielectric coupling[1] are driven by the same $magnetic$ degrees of freedom that lead to long-range magnetic order in NiTiO3, which in turn, establishes a linear magnetodielectric coupling in this compound.

High-Pressure Phase Diagram of NdFeAsO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$: Disappearance of superconductivity on the verge of ferromagnetism from nd moments

We investigated transport and magnetic properties of NdFeAsO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$ single crystal under hydrostatic pressures up to 50\,GPa. The ambient pressure superconductivity at $T_{c} \sim$ 45.4\,K is fully suppressed at $P_{c} \sim$ 21 GPa. Upon further increase of the pressure, the ferromagnetism associated with the order of rare-earth subsystem is induced at the border of superconductivity. Our finding is supported by the hysteresis in the magnetization $M$($H$) loops and the strong increase in the field cooled data, $M$($T$), toward low temperatures. We also show that the temperature evolution of the electrical resistivity as a function of pressure is consistent with a crossover from a Fermi-liquid to non-Fermi-liquid to Fermi-liquid. These results give access to the high-pressure side of the superconducting phase diagram in 1111 type of materials.

Superconducting gap symmetry in BaFe$_{1.9}$Ni$_{0.1}$As$_{2}$ superconductor

We report on the Andreev spectroscopy and specific heat of high-quality single crystals BaFe$_{1.9}$Ni$_{0.1}$As$_{2}$. The intrinsic multiple Andreev reflection spectroscopy reveals two anisotropic superconducting gaps $Δ_L \approx 3.2 \textendash 4.5$\,meV, $Δ_S \approx 1.2 \textendash 1.6$\,meV (the ranges correspond to the minimum and maximum value of the coupling energy in the $k_xk_y$-plane). The $25 \textendash 30 \%$ anisotropy shows the absence of nodes in the superconducting gaps. Using a two-band model with s-wave-like gaps $Δ_L \approx 3.2$\,meV and $Δ_S \approx 1.6$\,meV, the temperature dependence of the electronic specific heat can be well described. A linear magnetic field dependence of the low-temperature specific heat offers a further support of s-wave type of the order parameter. We find that a d-wave or single-gap BCS theory under the weak-coupling approach cannot describe our experiments.

High-pressure behavior of superconducting boron-doped diamond

This work investigates the high-pressure structure of freestanding superconducting ($T_{c}$ = 4.3\,K) boron doped diamond (BDD) and how it affects the electronic and vibrational properties using Raman spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction in the 0-30\,GPa range. High-pressure Raman scattering experiments revealed an abrupt change in the linear pressure coefficients and the grain boundary components undergo an irreversible phase change at 14\,GPa. We show that the blue shift in the pressure-dependent vibrational modes correlates with the negative pressure coefficient of $T_{c}$ in BDD. The analysis of x-ray diffraction data determines the equation of state of the BDD film, revealing a high bulk modulus of $B_{0}$=510$\pm$28\,GPa. The comparative analysis of high-pressure data clarified that the sp$^{2}$ carbons in the grain boundaries transform into hexagonal diamond.

NbS$_{3}$: A unique quasi one-dimensional conductor with three charge density wave transitions

Through transport, compositional and structural studies, we review the features of the charge-density wave (CDW) conductor of NbS$_{3}$ (phase II). We highlight three central results: 1) In addition to the previously reported CDW transitions at $T_{P1}$ = 360\,K and $T_{P2}$ = 150\,K, another CDW transition occurs at a much higher temperature $T_{P0}$ = 620-650\,K; evidence for the non-linear conductivity of this CDW is presented. 2) We show that CDW associated with the $T_{P2}$ - transition arises from S vacancies acting as donors. Such a CDW transition has not been observed before. 3) We show exceptional coherence of the $T_{P1}$-CDW at room-temperature. Additionally, we report on the effects of uniaxial strain on the CDW transition temperatures and transport.

Anomalous correlation effects and unique phase diagram of electron doped FeSe revealed by angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy

In FeSe-derived superconductors, the lack of a systematic and clean control on the carrier concentration prevents the comprehensive understanding on the phase diagram and the interplay between different phases. Here by K dosing and angle resolved photoemission study on thick FeSe films and FeSe$_{0.93}$S$_{0.07}$ bulk crystals, the phase diagram of FeSe as a function of electron doping is established, which is extraordinarily different from other Fe-based superconductors. The correlation strength remarkably increases with increasing doping, while an insulting phase emerges in the heavily overdoped regime. Between the nematic phase and the insulating phase, a dome of enhanced superconductivity is observed, with the maximum superconducting transition temperature of 44$\pm$2~K. The enhanced superconductivity is independent of the thickness of FeSe, indicating that it is intrinsic to FeSe. Our findings provide an ideal system with variable doping for understanding the different phases and rich physics in the FeSe family.

Crossover of the pairing symmetry from $s$- to $d$-wave in iron pnictide superconductors

One of the major themes in the physics of condensed matter is unconventional superconductivity in correlated electronic systems. The symmetry structure of Cooper pairs is thought to be the key to the understanding of the pairing mechanism of their superconductivity. In iron pnictide superconductors, the precise symmetry of the order parameter as well its evolution with doping remains highly controversial. There is no general consensus on the nature of pairing in iron-based superconductors leaving the perspectives ranging from $s^{++}$ wave, to $s^{\pm}$, and $d$ wave. Here we show that doping induced a sudden change of the pairing symmetry from the $s^{++}$- to $d$-wave in the BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_{x}$As$_{2}$ system with an $s^{\pm}$ state near the crossover boundary at $x=0.15$. The presence of the $s^{\pm}$ state is of particular scientific interest because an intermediate phase breaks the pairing symmetry when the $s$- and $d$-wave phases come together to interfere. For $x <$ 0.15, the temperature dependence of the London penetration depth, lower critical field, and specific heat in the superconducting (SC) state provides strong evidence for a two-band $s$-wave order parameter. Upon doping for $x >$ 0.15, we find the temperature and magnetic-field contributions to the specific heat in $T^{2}$ and $\sqrt{H}$, respectively, indicating line nodes in the SC gap. These findings thus clarify the symmetry nature as well as the evolution of the SC order parameter with doping in pnictide superconductors.

Crystal growth and the electronic phase diagram of the 4$d$ doped Na$_{1-δ}$Fe$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$As in comparison with 3$d$ doped Na$_{1-δ}$Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$As

Single crystals of Na$_{1-δ}$Fe$_{1-x}$T$_x$As with T = Co, Rh have been grown using a self-flux technique. The crystals were thoroughly characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility and electronic transport with particular focus on the Rh-doped samples. Measurements of the specific heat and ARPES were conducted exemplarily for the optimally doped compositions. The spin-density wave transition (SDW) observed for samples with low Rh concentration ($0\,\leq\,x\,\leq\,0.013$) is fully suppressed in the optimally doped sample. The superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) is enhanced from $10$~K in Na$_{1-δ}$FeAs to $21$~K in the optimally doped sample ($x$ = 0.019) of the Na$_{1-δ}$Fe$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$As series and decreases for the overdoped compounds, revealing a typical shape for the superconducting part of the electronic phase diagram. Remarkably, the phase diagram is almost identical to that of Co-doped Na$_{1-δ}$FeAs, suggesting a generic phase diagram for both dopants.

Superconducting properties of sulfur-doped iron selenide

The recent discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in single-layer iron selenide has generated significant experimental interest for optimizing the superconducting properties of iron-based superconductors through the lattice modification. For simulating the similar effect by changing the chemical composition due to S doping, we investigate the superconducting properties of high-quality single crystals of FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_{x}$ ($x$=0, 0.04, 0.09, and 0.11) using magnetization, resistivity, the London penetration depth, and low temperature specific heat measurements. We show that the introduction of S to FeSe enhances the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$, anisotropy, upper critical field $H_{c2}$, and critical current density $J_{c}$. The upper critical field $H_{c2}(T)$ and its anisotropy are strongly temperature dependent, indicating a multiband superconductivity in this system. Through the measurements and analysis of the London penetration depth $λ_{ab}(T)$ and specific heat, we show clear evidence for strong coupling two-gap $s$-wave superconductivity. The temperature-dependence of $λ_{ab}(T)$ calculated from the lower critical field and electronic specific heat can be well described by using a two-band model with $s$-wave-like gaps. We find that a $d$-wave and single-gap BCS theory under the weak-coupling approach can not describe our experiments. The change of specific heat induced by the magnetic field can be understood only in terms of multiband superconductivity.

Nodeless superconductivity in the presence of spin-density wave in pnictide superconductors: The case of BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_{x}$As$_{2}$

The characteristics of Fe-based superconductors are manifested in their electronic, magnetic properties, and pairing symmetry of the Cooper pair, but the latter remain to be explored. Usually in these materials, superconductivity coexists and competes with magnetic order, giving unconventional pairing mechanisms. We report on the results of the bulk magnetization measurements in the superconducting state and the low-temperature specific heat down to 0.4 K for BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_{x}$As$_{2}$ single crystals. The {electronic} specific heat displays a pronounced anomaly at the superconducting transition temperature and a small residual part {at low temperatures in the superconducting state}. The normal-state Sommerfeld coefficient increases with Ni doping for $x$ = 0.092, 0.096, and 0.10, which illustrates the competition between magnetism and superconductivity. Our analysis of the temperature dependence of the superconducting-state specific heat and the London penetration depth provides strong evidence for a two-band $s$-wave order parameter. Further, the data of the London penetration depth calculated from the lower critical field follow an exponential temperature dependence, characteristic of a fully gapped superconductor. These observations clearly show that the superconducting gap in the nearly optimally doped compounds is nodeless.
