Cech - de Rham Chern character on the stack of holomorphic vector bundles

We provide a formula for the Chern character of a holomorphic vector bundle in the hyper-cohomology of the de Rham complex of holomorphic sheaves on a complex manifold. This Chern character can be thought of as a completion of the Chern character in Hodge cohomology obtained as the trace of the exponential of the Atiyah class, which is \v{C}ech closed, to one that is \v{C}ech-Del closed. Such a completion is a key step toward lifting O'Brian-Toledo-Tong invariants of coherent sheaves from Hodge cohomology to de Rham cohomology. An alternate approach toward the same end goal, instead using simplicial differential forms and Green complexes, can be found in Hosgood's works [Ho1, Ho2]. In the algebraic setting, and more generally for K\"{a}hler manifolds, where Hodge and de Rham cohomologies agree, such extensions are not necessary, whereas in the non-K\"{a}hler, or equivariant settings the two theories differ. We provide our formulae as a map of simplicial presheaves, which readily extend the results to the equivariant setting and beyond. This paper can be viewed as a sequel to [GMTZ1] which covered such a discussion in Hodge cohomology. As an aside, we give a conceptual understanding of how formulas obtained by Bott and Tu for Chern classes using transition functions and those from Chern-Weil theory using connections, are part of a natural unifying story.

Simplicial presheaves of Green complexes and twisting cochains

We construct three simplicial presheaves on the site of ringed spaces, and in particular on that of complex manifolds. The descent objects for these simplicial presheaves yield Toledo--Tong's twisting cochains, simplicial twisting cochains, and complexes that appear in Green's thesis on Chern classes for coherent analytic sheaves, respectively. We thus extend the aforementioned constructions to the equivariant setting, and more generally to stacks. This is the first step in achieving push-forwards in K-theory and Riemann--Roch theorems for appropriate stacks, as was achieved by Toledo and Tong for arbitrary complex manifolds, and further pursued by O'Brian and Green.

Categorical models for path spaces

We establish an explicit comparison between two constructions in homotopy theory: the left adjoint of the homotopy coherent nerve functor, also known as the rigidification functor, and the Kan loop groupoid functor. This is achieved by considering localizations of the rigidification functor, unraveling a construction of Hinich, and using a sequence of operators originally introduced by Szczarba in 1961. As a result, we obtain several combinatorial models for the path category of a simplicial set. We then pass to the chain level and describe a model for the path category, now considered as a category enriched over differential graded (dg) coalgebras, in terms of a suitable algebraic chain model for the underlying simplicial set. This is achieved through a version of the cobar functor inspired by Lazarev and Holstein's categorical Koszul duality. As a consequence, we obtain a conceptual explanation of a result of Franz stating that there is a natural dg bialgebra quasi-isomorphism from the extended cobar construction on the chains of a reduced simplicial set to the chains on its Kan loop group.

A detailed look at the Szczarba map

We explain how to derive an explicit formula for a natural transformation relating the (left adjoints of) the homotopy coherent nerve and the Dwyer-Kan simplicial classifying space functor. The formula is derived using a method introduced by Szczarba when comparing two different chain models of a fibration. This note may be taken as a companion to section 3 of our previous article "Categorical models for path spaces".

Chern character for infinity vector bundles

Coherent sheaves on general complex manifolds do not necessarily have resolutions by finite complexes of vector bundles. However D. Toledo and Y.L.L. Tong showed that one can resolve coherent sheaves by objects analogous to chain complexes of holomorphic vector bundles, whose cocycle relations are governed by a coherent infinite system of homotopies. In the modern language such objects are obtained by the infinity-sheafification of the simplicial presheaf of chain complexes of holomorphic vector bundles. We define a Chern character as a map of simplicial presheaves, whereby the connected components of its sheafification recovers the Chern character of Toledo and Tong. As a consequence our construction extends Toledo Tong and O'Brian Toledo Tong's definition of the Chern character to the settings of stacks and in particular the equivariant setting. Even in the classical setting of complex manifolds, the induced maps on higher homotopy groups provide new Chern-Simons, and higher Chern-Simons, invariants for coherent sheaves.

A homological approach to the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble

We study the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE) using noncommutative geometry and the homological framework of the Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) formalism. Coefficients of the correlation functions in the GUE with respect to the rank $N$ are described in terms of ribbon graph Feynman diagrams that then lead to a counting problem for the corresponding surfaces. The canonical relations provided by this homological setup determine a recurrence relation for these correlation functions. Using this recurrence relation and properties of the Catalan numbers, we determine the leading order behavior of the correlation functions with respect to the rank $N$. As an application, we prove a generalization of Wigner's semicircle law and compute all the large $N$ statistical correlations for the family of random variables in the GUE defined by multi-trace functions.

The simplicial coalgebra of chains determines homotopy types rationally and one prime at a time

We prove that the simplicial cocommutative coalgebra of singular chains on a connected topological space determines the homotopy type rationally and one prime at a time, without imposing any restriction on the fundamental group. In particular, the fundamental group and the homology groups with coefficients in arbitrary local systems of vector spaces are completely determined by the natural algebraic structure of the chains. The algebraic structure is presented as the class of the simplicial cocommutative coalgebra of chains under a notion of weak equivalence induced by a functor from coalgebras to algebras coined by Adams as the cobar construction. The fundamental group is determined by a quadratic equation on the zeroth homology of the cobar construction of the normalized chains which involves Steenrod's chain homotopies for cocommutativity of the coproduct. The homology groups with local coefficients are modeled by an algebraic analog of the universal cover which is invariant under our notion of weak equivalence. We conjecture that the integral homotopy type is also determined by the simplicial coalgebra of integral chains, which we prove when the universal cover is of finite type.

Large $N$ phenomena and quantization of the Loday-Quillen-Tsygan theorem

We offer a new approach to large $N$ limits using the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism, both commutative and noncommutative, and we exhibit how the Loday-Quillen-Tsygan Theorem admits BV quantizations in that setting. Matrix integrals offer a key example: we demonstrate how this formalism leads to a recurrence relation that in principle allows us to compute all multi-point correlation functions. We also explain how the Harer-Zagier relations may be expressed in terms of this noncommutative geometry derived from the BV formalism. As another application, we consider the problem of quantization in the large $N$ limit and demonstrate how the Loday-Quillen-Tsygan Theorem leads us to a solution in terms of noncommutative geometry. These constructions are relevant to open topological field theories and string field theory, providing a mechanism that relates moduli of categories of branes to moduli of brane gauge theories.

Rational homotopy equivalences and singular chains

Bousfield and Kan's $\mathbb{Q}$-completion and fiberwise $\mathbb{Q}$-completion of spaces lead to two different approaches to the rational homotopy theory of non-simply connected spaces. In the first approach, a map is a weak equivalence if it induces an isomorphism on rational homology. In the second, a map of connected and pointed spaces is a weak equivalence if it induces an isomorphism between fundamental groups and higher rationalized homotopy groups; we call these maps $π_1$-rational homotopy equivalences. In this paper, we compare these two notions and show that $π_1$-rational homotopy equivalences correspond to maps that induce $Ω$-quasi-isomorphisms on the rational singular chains, i.e. maps that induce a quasi-isomorphism after applying the cobar functor to the dg coassociative coalgebra of rational singular chains. This implies that both notions of rational homotopy equivalence can be deduced from the rational singular chains by using different algebraic notions of weak equivalences: quasi-isomorphism and $Ω$-quasi-isomorphisms. We further show that, in the second approach, there are no dg coalgebra models of the chains that are both strictly cocommutative and coassociative.

Singular chains and the fundamental group

We show that the natural algebraic structure of the singular chains on a path connected topological space determines the fundamental group functorially. Moreover, we describe a notion of weak equivalence for the relevant algebraic structure under which the data of the fundamental group is preserved.

The Hodge Chern character of holomorphic connections as a map of simplicial presheaves

We define a map of simplicial presheaves, the Chern character, that assigns to every sequence of composable non connection preserving isomorphisms of vector bundles with holomorphic connections an appropriate sequence of holomorphic forms. We apply this Chern character map to the Cech nerve of a good cover of a complex manifold and assemble the data by passing to the totalization to obtain a map of simplicial sets. In simplicial degree 0, this map gives a formula for the Chern character of a bundle in terms of the clutching functions. In simplicial degree 1, this map gives a formula for the Chern character of bundle maps. In each simplicial degree beyond 1, these invariants, defined in terms of the transition functions, govern the compatibilities between the invariants assigned in previous simplicial degrees. In addition to this, we also apply this Chern character to complex Lie groupoids to obtain invariants of bundles on them in terms of the simplicial data. For group actions, these invariants land in suitable complexes calculating various Hodge equivariant cohomologies. In contrast, the de Rham Chern character formula involves additional terms and will appear in a sequel paper. In a sense, these constructions build on a point of view of "characteristic classes in terms of transition functions" advocated by Raoul Bott, which has been addressed over the years in various forms and degrees, concerning the existence of formulae for the Hodge and de Rham characteristic classes of bundles solely in terms of their clutching functions.

The colimit of an $\infty$-local system as a twisted tensor product

We describe several equivalent models for the infinity-category of infinity-local systems of chain complexes over a space using the framework of quasi-categories. We prove that the given models are equivalent as infinity-categories by exploiting the relationship between the differential graded nerve functor and the cobar construction. We use one of these models to calculate the quasi-categorical colimit of an infinity-local system in terms of a twisted tensor product.

The functor of singular chains detects weak homotopy equivalences

The normalized singular chains of a path connected pointed space $X$ may be considered as a connected $E_{\infty}$-coalgebra $\mathbf{C}_*(X)$ with the property that the $0^{\text{th}}$ homology of its cobar construction, which is naturally a cocommutative bialgebra, has an antipode, i.e. it is a cocommutative Hopf algebra. We prove that a continuous map of path connected pointed spaces $f: X\to Y$ is a weak homotopy equivalence if and only if $\mathbf{C}_*(f): \mathbf{C}_*(X)\to \mathbf{C}_*(Y)$ is an $\mathbfΩ$-quasi-isomorphism, i.e. a quasi-isomorphism of dg algebras after applying the cobar functor $\mathbfΩ$ to the underlying dg coassociative coalgebras. The proof is based on combining a classical theorem of Whitehead together with the observation that the fundamental group functor and the data of a local system over a space may be described functorially from the algebraic structure of the singular chains.

Cubical rigidification, the cobar construction, and the based loop space

We prove the following generalization of a classical result of Adams: for any pointed and connected topological space $(X,b)$, that is not necessarily simply connected, the cobar construction of the differential graded (dg) coalgebra of normalized singular chains in $X$ with vertices at $b$ is weakly equivalent as a differential graded associative algebra (dga) to the singular chains on the Moore based loop space of $X$ at $b$. We deduce this statement from several more general categorical results of independent interest. We construct a functor $\mathfrak{C}_{\square_c}$ from simplicial sets to categories enriched over cubical sets with connections which, after triangulation of their mapping spaces, coincides with Lurie's rigidification functor $\mathfrak{C}$ from simplicial sets to simplicial categories. Taking normalized chains of the mapping spaces of $\mathfrak{C}_{\square_c}$ yields a functor $Λ$ from simplicial sets to dg categories which is the left adjoint to the dg nerve functor. For any simplicial set $S$ with $S_0=\{x\}$, $Λ(S)(x,x)$ is a dga isomorphic to $ΩQ_Δ(S)$, the cobar construction on the dg coalgebra $Q_Δ(S)$ of normalized chains on $S$. We use these facts to show that $Q_Δ$ sends categorical equivalences between simplicial sets to maps of connected dg coalgebras which induce quasi-isomorphisms of dga's under the cobar functor.

Center of mass and Kähler structures

There is a sequence of positive numbers $δ_{2n}$, such that for any connected $2n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold $M$, there are two mutually exclusive possibilities: $1)$ There is a complex structure on $M$ making it into a Kähler manifold, or $2)$ For any almost complex structure $J$ compatible with the metric, at every point $p\in M$, there is a smooth loop $γ$ at $p$ such that $dist(J_p, hol_γ^{-1}J_phol_γ)> δ_{2n}$.

Differential K-theory as equivalence classes of maps to Grassmannians and unitary groups

We construct a model of differential K-theory, using the geometrically defined Chern forms, whose cocycles are certain equivalence classes of maps into the Grassmannians and unitary groups. In particular, we produce the circle-integration maps for these models using classical homotopy-theoretic constructions, by incorporating certain differential forms which reconcile the incompatibility between these even and odd Chern forms. By the uniqueness theorem of Bunke and Schick, this model agrees with the spectrum-based models in the literature whose abstract Chern cocycles are compatible with the delooping maps on the nose.

Loop Differential K-theory

In this paper we introduce an equivariant extension of the Chern-Simons form, associated to a path of connections on a bundle over a manifold M, to the free loop space LM, and show it determines an equivalence relation on the set of connections on a bundle. We use this to define a ring, loop differential K-theory of M, in much the same way that differential K-theory can be defined using the Chern-Simons form [SS]. We show loop differential K-theory yields a refinement of differential K-theory, and in particular incorporates holonomy information into its classes. Additionally, loop differential K-theory is shown to be strictly coarser than the Grothendieck group of bundles with connection up to gauge equivalence. Finally, we calculate loop differential K-theory of the circle.
