RobResilience: Implementing and Evaluating a Resilience Framework for Cyber-Physical Embodied Systems

In embodied cyber-physical systems, active cyberattacks pose an immediate threat not just to data, but to physical integrity and human safety. While existing security approaches excel at detection, they lack the runtime mechanisms to determine whether a disruption is tolerable or if performance degradation remains within safe operational bounds. This gap leaves autonomous systems vulnerable to graceful failure paralysis, where they cannot distinguish between a safe, degraded state and a catastrophic hazard during an ongoing attack. This paper presents RobResilience, an implementation of a formal resilience framework for embodied cyber-physical systems in a Webots simulation environment, using a PR2 robot and ROS2. The framework evaluates three predicates at runtime: tolerable disruption ($δ$), tolerable degradation ($γ$), and mitigation feasibility ($μ$), over a compromised device set derived from IDS confidence scores. When resilience is lost, the framework triggers available mitigation strategies. We evaluate our implementation through eight attack scenarios that systematically cover all possible combinations of the predicate state space, varying attack targets, degradation rates, and mitigation availability. Results confirm that the runtime behaviour of the implementation is consistent with the theoretical definitions.

Risk-Averse Planning and Plan Assessment for Marine Robots

Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) need to operate for days without human intervention and thus must be able to do efficient and reliable task planning. Unfortunately, efficient task planning requires deliberately abstract domain models (for scalability reasons), which in practice leads to plans that might be unreliable or under performing in practice. An optimal abstract plan may turn out suboptimal or unreliable during physical execution. To overcome this, we introduce a method that first generates a selection of diverse high-level plans and then assesses them in a low-level simulation to select the optimal and most reliable candidate. We evaluate the method using a realistic underwater robot simulation, estimating the risk metrics for different scenarios, demonstrating feasibility and effectiveness of the approach.

Toward Real-Time Image Annotation Using Marginalized Coupled Dictionary Learning

In most image retrieval systems, images include various high-level semantics, called tags or annotations. Virtually all the state-of-the-art image annotation methods that handle imbalanced labeling are search-based techniques which are time-consuming. In this paper, a novel coupled dictionary learning approach is proposed to learn a limited number of visual prototypes and their corresponding semantics simultaneously. This approach leads to a real-time image annotation procedure. Another contribution of this paper is that utilizes a marginalized loss function instead of the squared loss function that is inappropriate for image annotation with imbalanced labels. We have employed a marginalized loss function in our method to leverage a simple and effective method of prototype updating. Meanwhile, we have introduced ${\ell}_1$ regularization on semantic prototypes to preserve the sparse and imbalanced nature of labels in learned semantic prototypes. Finally, comprehensive experimental results on various datasets demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method for image annotation tasks in terms of accuracy and time. The reference implementation is publicly available on https://github.com/hamid-amiri/MCDL-Image-Annotation.
