Steady states and phase transitions in heterogeneous asymmetric exclusion processes

We study the nonequilibrium steady states in totally asymmetric exclusion processes (TASEP) with open boundary conditions having spatially inhomogeneous hopping rates. Considering smoothly varying hopping rates, we show that the steady states are in general classified by the steady state currents in direct analogy with open TASEPs having uniform hopping rates. We calculate the steady state bulk density profiles, which are now spatially nonuniform. We also obtain the phase diagrams in the plane of the control parameters, which though have phase boundaries that are in general curved lines, have the same topology as their counterparts for conventional open TASEPs, independent of the form of the hopping rate functions. This reveals a type of universality, not encountered in critical phenomena. Surprisingly and in contrast to the phase transitions in an open TASEP with uniform hopping, our studies on the phase transitions in the model reveal that all the three transitions are {\em first order} in nature. { We also demonstrate that this model admits delocalised domain walls (DDWs) on the phase boundaries demarcating the generalised low and high density phases in this model. However, in contrast to the DDWs observed in an open TASEP with uniform hopping, the envelopes of the DDWs in the present model are generally curved lines.}

Dynamics and stability of contractile actomyosin ring in the cell

Contraction of the cytokinetic ring during cell division leads to physical partitioning of a eukaryotic cell into two daughter cells. This involves flows of actin filaments and myosin motors in the growing membrane interface at the mid-plane of the dividing cell. Assuming boundary driven alignment of the acto-myosin filaments at the inner edge of the iterface we explore how the resulting active stresses influence the flow. Using the continuum gel theory framework, we obtain exact axisymmetric solutions of the dynamical equations. These solutions are consistent with experimental observations on closure rate. Using these solutions we perform linear stability analysis for the contracting ring under non-axisymmetric deformations. Our analysis shows that few low wave number modes, which are unstable during onset of the constriction, later on become stable when the ring shrinks to smaller radii, which is a generic feature of actomyosin ring closure. Our theory also captures how the effective tension in the ring decreases with its radius causing significant slow down in the contraction process at later times.

AI-enabled Blockchain: An Outlier-aware Consensus Protocol for Blockchain-based IoT Networks

A new framework for a secure and robust consensus in blockchain-based IoT networks is proposed using machine learning. Hyperledger fabric, which is a blockchain platform developed as part of the Hyperledger project, though looks very apt for IoT applications, has comparatively low tolerance for malicious activities in an untrustworthy environment. To that end, we propose AI-enabled blockchain (AIBC) with a 2-step consensus protocol that uses an outlier detection algorithm for consensus in an IoT network implemented on hyperledger fabric platform. The outlier-aware consensus protocol exploits a supervised machine learning algorithm which detects anomaly activities via a learned detector in the first step. Then, the data goes through the inherent Practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance (PBFT) consensus protocol in the hyperledger fabric for ledger update. We measure and report the performance of our framework with respect to the various delay components. Results reveal that our implemented AIBC network (2-step consensus protocol) improves hyperledger fabric performance in terms of fault tolerance by marginally compromising the delay performance.

A Prospect Theoretic Approach for Trust Management in IoT Networks under Manipulation Attacks

As Internet of Things (IoT) and Cyber-Physical systems become more ubiquitous and an integral part of our daily lives, it is important that we are able to trust the data aggregate from such systems. However, the interpretation of trustworthiness is contextual and varies according to the risk tolerance attitude of the concerned application and varying levels of uncertainty associated with the evidence upon which trust models act. Hence, the data integrity scoring mechanisms should have provisions to adapt to varying risk attitudes and uncertainties. In this paper, we propose a Bayesian inference model and a prospect theoretic framework for data integrity scoring that quantify the trustworthiness of data collected from IoT devices in the presence of an adversaries who manipulate the data. We consider an imperfect anomaly monitoring mechanism that monitors the data being sent from each device and classifies the outcome as not compromised, compromised, and cannot be inferred. These outcomes are conceptualized as a multinomial hypothesis of a Bayesian inference model with three parameters which are then used for calculating a utility value on how reliable the aggregate data is. We use a prospect theory inspired approach to quantify this data integrity score and evaluate the trustworthiness of the aggregate data from the IoT framework. Furthermore, we also model the system using the traditionally used expected utility theory and compare the results with that obtained using prospect theory. As decisions are based on how the data is fused, we propose two measuring models: one optimistic and another conservative. The proposed framework is validated using extensive simulation experiments. We show how data integrity scores vary under a variety of system factors like attack intensity and inaccurate detection.

A Survey on Consensus Protocols in Blockchain for IoT Networks

The success of blockchain as the underlying technology for cryptocurrencies has opened up possibilities for its use in other application domains as well. The main advantages of blockchain for its potential use in other domains are its inherent security mechanisms and immunity to different attacks. A blockchain relies on a consensus method for agreeing on any new data. Most of the consensus methods which are currently used for the blockchain of different cryptocurrencies require high computational power and thus are not apt for resource-constrained systems. In this article, we discuss and survey the various blockchain based consensus methods that are applicable to resource constrained IoT devices and networks. A typical IoT network consists of several devices which have limited computational and communications capabilities. Most often, these devices cannot perform intensive computations and are starved for bandwidth. Therefore, we discuss the possible measures that can be taken to reduce the computational power and convergence time for the underlying consensus methods. We also talk about some of the alternatives to the public blockchain like private blockchain and tangle, along with their potential adoption for IoT networks. Furthermore, we review the existing consensus methods that have been implemented and explore the possibility of utilizing them to realize a blockchain based IoT network. Some of the open research challenges are also put forward.
