UI-UG 2: Advancing Mobile UI Understanding and Generation with Fine-Grained Supervision and Reinforcement Learning

Mobile UI understanding and generation require both fine-grained component perception and reliable structured synthesis. Inspired by the unified direction introduced by UI-UG, we present UI-UG 2, a compact 4B-parameter multimodal large language model (MLLM) that advances mobile UI Understanding and Generation with broader task coverage, a front-end-aligned taxonomy, and online render-aware reinforcement learning. UI-UG 2 constructs a multi-source understanding corpus from RICO, VINS, Android in the Wild, and Android Control, annotated with an 80-category two-level UI taxonomy aligned with front-end component semantics, and pairs it with over 5,000 requirement-screenshot-JSON tuples for progressive structured UI generation through a domain-specific language (DSL). For understanding, UI-UG 2 introduces decomposed rewards for category prediction, OCR fidelity, color recognition, dense grounding, and GUI grounding. Unlike the offline Direct Preference Optimization (DPO)-style generation optimization in UI-UG, UI-UG 2 optimizes generation through end-to-end online Group Relative Policy Optimization (GRPO): sampled DSL outputs are rendered with a Playwright-based server-side pipeline and evaluated using LLM-as-a-Judge and contrastive preference ranking. Experiments show that UI-UG 2 achieves the strongest referring and dense-grounding results among the evaluated models on our 80-category benchmark, and achieves the best composite generation score among compared models at a compact scale (4B). More importantly, we observe a consistent understanding-to-generation transfer: adding fine-grained UI perception supervision improves generation quality under a fixed training budget, suggesting that component-level semantics provide a shared representational foundation for both tasks.

Reasoning for Mobile User Experience with Multimodal LLMs: Task, Benchmark, and Approach

User experience (UX) centered on usability, perceived consistency, and functional clarity is fundamental to real-world user interfaces (UI). The application of multimodal large language models (MLLMs) in the field of user interfaces is evolving rapidly, such as visual element grounding, graphical user interface (GUI) agents, and design-to-code generation. However, research efforts on evaluating UX based on UI screenshots are still immature. To address this, we propose UXBench, a novel multimodal benchmark consisting of 2,000 VQA data samples designed to assess MLLMs' ability to perform UI-based reasoning. UXBench includes 8 tasks based on real-world UI screenshots that require fine-grained diagnosis of UX issues across layout relationships, visual hierarchy, and content consistency. Our extensive evaluation of mainstream MLLMs shows that they remain fundamentally limited in their capacity for UI-based reasoning. The results underscore the need for further advancements in this area. To bridge this gap, we propose UI-UX, an MLLM based on Qwen3-VL-4B-Thinking foundation model and enhanced via reinforcement learning with two key innovations: a reward routing mechanism that dynamically balances perceptual understanding and logical reasoning during inference, and an asymmetric transition reward that suppresses redundant or insufficient reasoning steps. Experiments demonstrate that UI-UX achieves state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance on UXBench, attaining an accuracy of 0.7963 -- surpassing Claude-4.5-Sonnet's 0.6550 -- while exhibiting strong generalization across diverse UI tasks and maintaining low inference latency.

UI-UG: A Unified MLLM for UI Understanding and Generation

Although Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) have been widely applied across domains, they are still facing challenges in domain-specific tasks, such as User Interface (UI) understanding accuracy and UI generation quality. In this paper, we introduce UI-UG (a unified MLLM for UI Understanding and Generation), integrating both capabilities. For understanding tasks, we employ Supervised Fine-tuning (SFT) combined with Group Relative Policy Optimization (GRPO) to enhance fine-grained understanding on the modern complex UI data. For generation tasks, we further use Direct Preference Optimization (DPO) to make our model generate human-preferred UIs. In addition, we propose an industrially effective workflow, including the design of an LLM-friendly domain-specific language (DSL), training strategies, rendering processes, and evaluation metrics. In experiments, our model achieves state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance on understanding tasks, outperforming both larger general-purpose MLLMs and similarly-sized UI-specialized models. Our model is also on par with these larger MLLMs in UI generation performance at a fraction of the computational cost. We also demonstrate that integrating understanding and generation tasks can improve accuracy and quality for both tasks. Code and Model: https://github.com/neovateai/UI-UG
