Optically Sensorized Electro-Ribbon Actuator (OS-ERA)

Electro-Ribbon Actuators (ERAs) are lightweight flexural actuators that exhibit ultrahigh displacement and fast movement. However, their embedded sensing relies on capacitive sensors with limited precision, which hinders accurate control. We introduce OS-ERA, an optically sensorized ERA that yields reliable proprioceptive information, and we focus on the design and integration of a sensing solution without affecting actuation. To analyse the complex curvature of an ERA in motion, we design and embed two soft optical waveguide sensors. A classifier is trained to map the sensing signals in order to distinguish eight bending states. We validate our model on six held-out trials and compare it against signals' trajectories learned from training runs. Across all tests, the sensing output signals follow the training manifold, and the predicted sequence mirrors real performance and confirms repeatability. Despite deliberate train-test mismatches in actuation speed, the signal trajectories preserve their shape, and classification remains consistently accurate, demonstrating practical voltage- and speed-invariance. As a result, OS-ERA classifies bending states with high fidelity; it is fast and repeatable, solving a longstanding bottleneck of the ERA, enabling steps toward closed-loop control.

Enhanced quantum emission from a topological Floquet resonance

Entanglement is a valuable resource in quantum information technologies. The practical implementation of entangled photon sources faces obstacles from imperfections and defects inherent in physical systems, resulting in a loss or degradation of entanglement. The topological photonic insulators, however, have emerged as promising candidates, demonstrating an exceptional capability to resist defect-induced scattering, thus enabling the development of robust entangled sources. Despite their inherent advantages, building programmable topologically protected entangled sources remains challenging due to complex device designs and weak material nonlinearity. Here we present a development in entangled photon pair generation achieved through a non-magnetic and tunable anomalous Floquet insulator, utilizing an optical spontaneous four-wave mixing process. We verify the non-classicality and time-energy entanglement of the photons generated by our topological system. Our experiment demonstrates a substantial enhancement in nonclassical photon pair generation compared to devices reliant only on topological edge states. Our result could lead to the development of resilient quantum sources with potential applications in quantum technology.

The Design and Simulation of a Coarse-to-Fine Optical MEMS Accelerometer

In this paper, a novel coarse-to-fine optical MEMS accelerometer based on the Fabry Perot (FP) interferometer is proposed. The mechanical structure consists of a proof mass that is suspended by four L-shaped springs. The deflection of the proof mass due to the applied acceleration is detected using two FP cavities which comprise the optical system of the device. Using coarse-to-fine measurement and the dual-wavelength method increases the sensitivity of the accelerometer as well as the linear measurement range simultaneously. The optical simulation shows that the sensitivity of the proposed device is 10 times as high as that of a similar optical MEMS accelerometer with one FP cavity. In addition, the proposed optical system is insensitive to the displacements of the proof mass in orthogonal directions as a result of which cross-axis sensitivity is considerably reduced. The minimum feature size of the structure is 15 um and the optical signal is conducted completely through the optical fibers, facilitating the fabrication of the device. The simulation results are as follows: mechanical sensitivity of 190 nm/g, optical sensitivity of 8 nm/g, linear measurement of 5 g, and first resonance frequency of 1141 Hz.

Design and Fabrication of a Differential MOEMS Accelerometer Based on Fabry Perot micro-cavities

In this paper, a differential MOEMS accelerometer based on the Fabry-Perot (FP) micro-cavities is presented. The optical system of the device consists of two FP cavities and the mechanical system is composed of a proof mass that is suspended by four springs. The applied acceleration tends to move the PM from its resting position. This mechanical displacement can be measured by the FP interferometer formed between the proof mass cross-section and the optical fiber end face. The proposed sensor is fabricated on a silicon on insulator (SOI) wafer using the bulk micromachining method. The results of the sensor characterization show that the accelerometer has a linear response in the range of 1g. Also, the optical sensitivity and resolution of the sensor in the static characterization are 6.52 nm/g and 153ug. The sensor sensitivity in the power measurement is 49.6 mV/g and its resonant is at 1372 Hz. Using the differential measurement method increases the sensitivity of the accelerometer. Based on experimental data, the sensor sensitivity is two times as high as that of a similar MOEMS accelerometer with one FP cavity.

Closed-Loop MOEMS Accelerometer

In this paper, a closed-loop micro-opto-electro-mechanical system (MOEMS) accelerometer based on the Fabry-Pérot (FP) interferometer is presented. The FP cavity is formed between the end of a cleaved single-mode optical fiber and the cross-section of a proof mass (PM) which is suspended by four U-shaped springs. The applied acceleration tends to move the PM in the opposite direction. The arrays of fixed and movable comb fingers produce an electrostatic force which keeps the PM in its resting position. The voltage that can provide this electrostatic force is considered as the output of the sensor. Using a closed-loop detection method it is possible to increase the measurement range without losing the resolution. The proposed sensor is fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator wafer using the bulk micromachining method. The results of the sensor characterization show that the accelerometer has a linear response in the range of 5 g. In the closed-loop mode, the sensitivity and bias instability of the sensor are 1.16 V/g and 40 g, respectively.

A Multi-stage Stochastic Programming Approach for Network Capacity Expansion with Multiple Sources of Capacity

In networks, there are often more than one source of capacity. The capacities can be permanently or temporarily owned by the decision maker. Depending on the nature of sources, we identify the permanent capacity, spot market capacity and contract capacity. We use a scenario tree to model the uncertainty, and build a multi-stage stochastic integer program that can incorporate multiple sources and multiple types of capacities in a general network. We propose two solution methodologies for the problem. Firstly, we design an asymptotically convergent approximation algorithm. Secondly, we design a cutting plane algorithm based on Benders decomposition to find tight bounds for the problem. The numerical experiments show superb performance of the proposed algorithms compared with commercial software.
