Handlebody decompositions of 3-manifolds and polycontinuous patterns

We introduce the concept of a handlebody decomposition of a 3-manifold, a generalization of a Heegaard splitting, or a trisection. We show that two handlebody decompositions of a closed orientable 3-manifold are stably equivalent. As an application to materials science, we consider a mathematical model of polycontinuous patterns and discuss a topological study of microphase separation of a block copolymer melt.

The maximum and minimum genus of a multibranched surface

In this paper, we give a lower bound for the maximum and minimum genus of a multibranched surface by the first Betti number and the minimum and maximum genus of the boundary of the neighborhood of it, respectively. As its application, we show that the maximum and minimum genus of $G\times S^1$ is equal to twice of the maximum and minimum genus of $G$ for a graph $G$, respectively. This provides an interplay between graph theory and 3-manifold theory.

A partial order on multibranched surfaces in 3-manifolds

In this paper, we introduce a partial order on neighborhood equivalence classes of maximally spread essential multibranched surfaces embedded in a 3-manifold. We show that if a maximally spread essential multibranched surface is atoroidal and acylindrical, then its equivalence class is minimal with respect to the partial order.

Unknotting submanifolds of the 3-sphere by twistings

By the Fox's re-embedding theorem, any compact submanifold of the 3-sphere can be re-embedded in the 3-sphere so that it is unknotted. It is unknown whether the Fox's re-embedding can be replaced with twistings. In this paper, we will show that any closed 2-manifold embedded in the 3-sphere can be unknotted by twistings. In spite of this phenomenon, we show that there exists a compact 3-submanifold of the 3-sphere which cannot be unknotted by twistings. This shows that the Fox's re-embedding cannot always be replaced with twistings.

Two more proofs that the Kinoshita graph is knotted

The Kinoshita graph is a particular embedding in the 3-sphere of a graph with three edges, two vertices and no loops. It has the remarkable property that although the removal of any edge results in an unknotted loop, the Kinoshita graph is itself knotted. We use two classical theorems from knot theory to give two particularly simple proofs that the Kinoshita graph is knotted. Apart from appealing to the two classical theorems, the exposition is elementary and is aimed at those with only a passing familiarity with knot theory.

Characterization of 3-punctured spheres in non-hyperbolic link exteriors

In this paper, we characterize non-hyperbolic 3-component links in the 3-sphere whose exteriors contain essential 3-punctured spheres with non-integral boundary slopes. We also show the existence of embeddings of some multibranched surfaces in the 3-sphere which satisfy some homological conditions to be embedded in the 3-sphere.

Decomposing Heegaard splittings along separating incompressible surfaces in 3-manifolds

In this paper, by putting a separating incompressible surface in a 3-manifold into Morse position relative to the height function associated to a strongly irreducible Heegaard splitting, we show that an incompressible subsurface of the Heegaard splitting can be found, by decomposing the 3-manifold along the separating surface. Further if the Heegaard surface is of Hempel distance at least 4, then there is a pair of such subsurfaces on both sides of the given separating surface. This gives a particularly simple hierarchy for the 3-manifold.

The incompatibility of crossing number and bridge number for knot diagrams

We define and compare several natural ways to compute the bridge number of a knot diagram. We study bridge numbers of crossing number minimizing diagrams, as well as the behavior of diagrammatic bridge numbers under the connected sum operation. For each notion of diagrammatic bridge number considered, we find crossing number minimizing knot diagrams which fail to minimize bridge number. Furthermore, we construct a family of minimal crossing diagrams for which the difference between diagrammatic bridge number and the actual bridge number of the knot grows to infinity.

Knots and surfaces

This article is an English translation of Japanese article "Musubime to Kyokumen", Math. Soc. Japan, Sugaku Vol. 67, No. 4 (2015) 403--423. It surveys a specific area in Knot Theory concerning surfaces in knot exteriors. In version 2, we added comments on the solutions or counterexamples for Conjecture 3.5, Conjecture 3.7 and Conjecture 5.30.

Height, trunk and representativity of knots

In this paper, we investigate three geometrical invariants of knots, the height, the trunk and the representativity. First, we give a conterexample for the conjecture which states that the height is additive under connected sum of knots. We also define the minimal height of a knot and give a potential example which has a gap between the height and the minimal height. Next, we show that the representativity is bounded above by a half of the trunk. We also define the trunk of a tangle and show that if a knot has an essential tangle decomposition, then the representativity is bounded above by half of the trunk of either of the two tangles. Finally, we remark on the difference among Gabai's thin position, ordered thin position and minimal critical position. We also give an example of a knot which bounds an essential non-orientable spanning surface, but has arbitrarily large representativity.

Genera and minors of multibranched surfaces

We say that a $2$-dimensional CW complex is a multibranched surface if we remove all points whose open neighborhoods are homeomorphic to the $2$-dimensional Euclidean space, then we obtain a $1$-dimensional complex which is homeomorphic to a disjoint union of some $S^1$'s. We define the genus of a multibranched surface $X$ as the minimum number of genera of $3$-dimensional manifold into which $X$ can be embedded. We prove some inequalities which give upper bounds for the genus of a multibranched surface. A multibranched surface is a generalization of graphs. Therefore, we can define "minors" of multibranched surfaces analogously. We study various properties of the minors of multibranched surfaces.

Thin position for incompressible surfaces in 3-manifolds

In this paper, we give an algorithm to build all compact orientable atoroidal Haken 3-manifolds with tori boundary or closed orientable Haken 3-manifolds, so that in both cases, there are embedded closed orientable separating incompressible surfaces which are not tori. Next, such incompressible surfaces are related to Heegaard splittings. For simplicity, we focus on the case of separating incompressible surfaces, since non-separating ones have been extensively studied. After putting the surfaces into Morse position relative to the height function associated to the Heegaard splittings, a thin position method is applied so that levels are thin or thick, depending on the side of the surface. The complete description of the surface in terms of these thin/thick levels gives a hierarchy. Also this thin/thick description can be related to properties of the curve complex for the Heegaard surface.

An obstruction to embedding $2$-dimensional complexes into the $3$-sphere

We consider an embedding of a $2$-dimensional CW complex into the $3$-sphere, and construct it's dual graph. Then we obtain a homogeneous system of linear equations from the $2$-dimensional CW complex in the first homology group of the complement of the dual graph. By checking that the homogeneous system of linear equations does not have an integral solution, we show that some $2$-dimensional CW complexes cannot be embedded into the 3-sphere.

Knot homotopy in subspaces of the 3-sphere

We discuss an "extrinsic" property of knots in a 3-subspace of the 3-sphere $S^3$ to characterize how the subspace is embedded in $S^3$. Specifically, we show that every knot in a subspace of the 3-sphere is transient if and only if the exterior of the subspace is a disjoint union of handlebodies, i.e. regular neighborhoods of embedded graphs, where a knot in a 3-subspace of $S^3$ is said to be transient if it can be moved by a homotopy within the subspace to the trivial knot in $S^3$. To show this, we discuss relation between certain group-theoretic and homotopic properties of knots in a compact 3-manifold, which can be of independent interest. Further, using the notion of transient knot, we define an integer-valued invariant of knots in $S^3$ that we call the transient number. We then show that the union of the sets of knots of unknotting number one and tunnel number one is a proper subset of the set of knots of transient number one.
