Realized Stochastic Volatility Models with Skew-t Distributions for Volatility and Tail Risk Forecasting

Accurate forecasting of volatility is essential for financial risk management and for the evaluation of tail risk measures such as value-at-risk (VaR) and expected shortfall (ES). This study proposes the realized stochastic volatility (RSV) model, an extension of the traditional stochastic volatility (SV) model that incorporates realized volatility as an efficient proxy for latent volatility. To better capture the stylized features of financial return distributions, particularly skewness and heavy tails, we consider three variants of skew-t distributions, two of which also admit skew-normal components to flexibly model asymmetry. The models are estimated using a Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo approach and applied to daily returns and realized volatility measures for major U.S. and Japanese stock indices. Empirically, RSV models robustly improve volatility forecasts relative to SV models across both indices, all four realized volatility proxies, and both pairwise and joint evaluation procedures. The evidence on VaR and ES forecasts is more heterogeneous and the advantage of RSV and skew-t specifications over their SV counterparts is mixed. Across both volatility and tail risk forecasting, RSV and skew-t specifications are useful in several settings, but no single specification dominates uniformly across indices, risk levels, and sample periods.

Returns and Order Flow Imbalances: Intraday Dynamics and Macroeconomic News Effects

We study the interaction between returns and order flow imbalances in the S&P 500 E-mini futures market using a structural VAR model identified through heteroskedasticity. The model is estimated at one-second frequency for each 15-minute interval, capturing both intraday variation and endogeneity due to time aggregation. We find that macroeconomic news announcements sharply reshape price-flow dynamics: price impact rises, flow impact declines, return volatility spikes, and flow volatility falls. Pooling across days, both price and flow impacts are significant at the one-second horizon, with estimates broadly consistent with stylized limit-order-book predictions. Impulse responses indicate that shocks dissipate almost entirely within a second. Structural parameters and volatilities also exhibit pronounced intraday variation tied to liquidity, trading intensity, and spreads. These results provide new evidence on high-frequency price formation and liquidity, highlighting the role of public information and order submission in shaping market quality.

Nonlinear Optical Response in two-dimensional Mott Insulators

We study the third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility $χ^{(3)}$ and photoexcited states of two-dimensional (2D) Mott insulators by using an effective model in the strong-coupling limit of a half-filled Hubbard model. In the numerically exact diagonalization calculations on finite-size clusters, we find that the coupling of charge and spin degrees of freedom plays a crucial role in the distribution of the dipole-allowed states with odd parity and the dipole-forbidden states with even parity in the photoexcited states. This is in contrast with the photoexcited states in one dimension, where the charge and spin degrees of freedom are decoupled. In the third-harmonic generation (THG) spectrum, main contribution is found to come from the process of three-photon resonance associated with the odd-parity states. As a result, the two-photon resonance process is less pronounced in the THG spectrum. The calculated THG spectrum is compared with recent experimental data. We also find that $χ^{(3)}$ with cross-polarized configuration of pump and probe photons shows spectral distributions similar to $χ^{(3)}$ with co-polarized configuration, although the weight is small. These findings will help the analyses of the experimental data of $χ^{(3)}$ in the 2D Mott insulators.
