Numerical Study on Entrance Length in Thermal Counterflow of Superfluid $^4$He

Three-dimensional numerical simulations in a square duct were conducted to investigate entrance lengths of normal fluid and superfluid flows in a thermal counterflow of superfluid $^4$He. The two fluids were coarse-grained by using the Hall-Vinen-Bekharevich-Khalatnikov (HVBK) model and were coupled through mutual friction. We solved the HVBK equations by parameterizing the coefficient of the mutual friction to consider the vortex line density. A uniform mutual friction parameter was assumed in the streamwise direction. Our simulation showed that the entrance length of the normal fluid from a hot end becomes shorter than that of a single normal fluid due to the mutual friction with the parabolically developed superfluid flow near the hot end. As the mutual friction increases, the entrance length decreases. Same as that, the entrance length of the superfluid from a cold end is affected by the strength of the mutual friction due to the parabolically developed normal fluid flow near the cold end. Aside from the entrance effect, the realized condition of a tail-flattened flow is discussed by parameterizing the superfluid turbulent eddy viscosity and the mutual friction.

Phase separation of quantized vortices in two-component miscible Bose-Einstein condensates in a two-dimensional box potential

The dynamics of quantized vortices in two-dimensional two-component miscible Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) trapped by a box potential has been numerically studied using the Gross{ Pitaevskii model. We have discovered a novel phenomenon where the vortices of the two components spatially separate from each other, which we call the phase separation of the distribution of vortices. This phase separation occurs when the inter-component coupling is strong. Onsager vortices, on the other hand, are formed in both components when the inter-component coupling is weak. We distinguish between Onsager vortices and phase-separated vortices by two types of effective distances between vortices. The dependence of the transition between the Onsager vortices and phase-separated vortices on the inter-component interaction is also studied.

Thermalization of a weakly interacting Bose gas in a disordered trap

Previously we numerically showed that thermalization can occur in an oscillating Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with a disordered harmonic trap when healing length $ξ$ of the condensate is shorter than the correlation length $σ_{D}$ of the disorder [see, for example, the experiment reported in Phys. Rev. A \textbf{82}, 033603 (2010)]. In this work, we investigate the weakly interacting or Anderson localization regime $ξ>σ_{D}$ and show that the oscillating BEC can also exhibit a relaxation process from nonequilibrium to equilibrium. In such an isolated quantum system, energy and particle number are conserved and the irreversible evolution towards thermodynamic equilibrium is induced by the disorder. The thermodynamic equilibrium is evidenced by the maximized entropy $S\left[n_{k}\right]$ in which the waveaction spectrum $n_{k}$ follows the Rayleigh-Jeans distribution. Besides, unlike a monotonic irreversible process of thermalization to equilibrium, the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou recurrence arises in this system, manifested by the oscillation of the non-equilibrium entropy.

Thermalization and localization of an oscillating Bose-Einstein condensate in a disordered trap

We numerically simulate an oscillating Bose-Einstein condensate in a disordered trap [Phys. Rev. A 82, 033603 (2010)] and the results are in good agreement with the experiment. It allows us to verify that total energy and particle number are conserved in this quantum system. The disorder acts as a medium, which results in a relaxation from nonequilibrium to equilibrium, i.e., thermalization. An algebraic localization is realized when the system approaches the equilibrium, and if the system falls into the regime when the healing length of the condensate exceeds the correlation length of the disorder, exponential Anderson localization is to be observed.

Synthetic dissipation and cascade fluxes in a turbulent quantum gas

Scale-invariant fluxes are the defining property of turbulent cascades, but their direct measurement is a notorious problem. Here we perform such a measurement for a direct energy cascade in a turbulent quantum gas. Using a time-periodic force, we inject energy at a large lengthscale and generate a cascade in a uniformly-trapped Bose gas. The adjustable trap depth provides a high-momentum cutoff $k_{\textrm{D}}$, which realises a synthetic dissipation scale. This gives us direct access to the particle flux across a momentum shell of radius $k_{\textrm{D}}$, and the tunability of $k_{\textrm{D}}$ allows for a clear demonstration of the zeroth law of turbulence: we observe that for fixed forcing the particle flux vanishes as $k_{\textrm{D}}^{-2}$ in the dissipationless limit $k_{\textrm{D}}\rightarrow \infty$, while the energy flux is independent of $k_{\textrm{D}}$. Moreover, our time-resolved measurements give unique access to the pre-steady-state dynamics, when the cascade front propagates in momentum space.

Onsager vortex formation in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

We numerically study the dynamics of quantized vortices in two-dimensional two-component Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) trapped by a box potential. For one-component BECs in a box potential, it is known that quantized vortices form Onsager vortices, which are clusters of same-sign vortices. We confirm that the vortices of the two components spatially separate from each other-even for miscible two-component BECs-suppressing the formation of Onsager vortices. This phenomenon is caused by the repulsive interaction between vortices belonging to different components, hence, suggesting a new possibility for vortex phase separation.

Three-Dimensional Coupled Dynamics of Two-Fluid Model in Superfluid $^4$He: Deformed Velocity Profile of Normal Fluid in Thermal Counterflow

The coupled dynamics of the two-fluid model of superfluid $^4$He is numerically studied for quantum turbulence of the thermal counterflow in a square channel. We combine the vortex filament model of the superfluid and the Navier-Stokes equations of normal fluid. Simulations of the coupled dynamics show that the velocity profile of the normal fluid is deformed significantly by superfluid turbulence as the vortices become dense. This result is consistent with recently performed visualization experiments. We introduce a dimensionless parameter that characterizes the deformation of the velocity profile.

Emergence of spiral dark solitons in the merging of rotating Bose-Einstein condensates

Merging of isolated Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) is an important topic due to its relevance to matter-wave interferometry and the Kibble-Zurek mechanism. Many past research focused on merging of BECs with uniform initial phases. In our recent numerical study (Phys. Rev. A 97, 013612 (2018)), we revealed that upon merging of rotating BECs with non-uniform initial phases, spiral-shaped dark solitons can emerge. These solitons facilitate angular momentum transfer and allow the merged condensate to rotate even in the absence of quantized vortices. More strikingly, the sharp endpoints of these spiral solitons can induce rotational motion in the BECs like vortices but with effectively a fraction of a quantized circulation. This paper reports our systematic study on the merging dynamics of rotating BECs. We discuss how the potential barrier that initially separates the BECs can affect the profile of the spiral solitons. We also show that the number of spiral solitons created in the BECs matches the relative winding number of the rotating BECs. The underlying mechanism of the observed soliton dynamics is explained.

Rotation and Angular Momentum Transfer in Bose-Einstein Condensates Induced by Spiral Dark Solitons

It is a common view that rotational motion in a superfluid can exist only in the presence of quantized vortices. However, in our numerical studies on the merging of two concentric Bose-Einstein condensates with axial symmetry in two-dimensional space, we observe the emergence of a spiral dark soliton when one condensate has a non-zero initial angular momentum. This spiral dark soliton enables the transfer of angular momentum between the condensates and allows the merged condensate to rotate even in the absence of quantized vortices. We examine the flow field around the soliton and reveal that its sharp endpoint can induce flow like a vortex point but with a fraction of a quantized circulation. This interesting nontopological "phase defect" may generate broad interests since rotational motion is essential in many quantum transport processes.

Numerical Studies of Quantum Turbulence

We review numerical studies of quantum turbulence. Quantum turbulence is currently one of the most important problems in low temperature physics and is actively studied for superfluid helium and atomic Bose--Einstein condensates. A key aspect of quantum turbulence is the dynamics of condensates and quantized vortices. The dynamics of quantized vortices in superfluid helium are described by the vortex filament model, while the dynamics of condensates are described by the Gross--Pitaevskii model. Both of these models are nonlinear, and the quantum turbulent states of interest are far from equilibrium. Hence, numerical studies have been indispensable for studying quantum turbulence. In fact, numerical studies have contributed in revealing the various problems of quantum turbulence. This article reviews the recent developments in numerical studies of quantum turbulence. We start with the motivation and the basics of quantum turbulence and invite readers to the frontier of this research. Though there are many important topics in the quantum turbulence of superfluid helium, this article focuses on inhomogeneous quantum turbulence in a channel, which has been motivated by recent visualization experiments. Atomic Bose--Einstein condensates are a modern issue in quantum turbulence, and this article reviews a variety of topics in the quantum turbulence of condensates e.g. two-dimensional quantum turbulence, weak wave turbulence, turbulence in a spinor condensate, $etc.$, some of which has not been addressed in superfluid helium and paves the novel way for quantum turbulence researches. Finally we discuss open problems.

Quantum crystallography of Rydberg-dressed Bose gases on a square lattice

We numerically investigate the quantum crystallographic phases of a Rydberg-dressed Bose gas loaded on a square lattice by using the mean-field Gross--Pitaevskii model. For a relatively weak lattice confinement, the phases of ground state undergo amorphism, polycrystal, and polymorphism following the increase of the blockade radius, and if the confinement is stronger, a single crystal with a specific filling factor will be formed. In order to distinctively characterize these phases, the structure function is also studied. In such an anisotropic system, we report that the first diagonal element of the superfluid-fraction tensor should be a measurable quantity, and an anisotropy parameter can be defined. In addition, for such crystallographic phases, the interaction potential can manifest where the grain boundaries appear.

Coflow turbulence of superfluid ${}^4$He in a square channel: Vortices trapped on a cylindrical attractor

We perform a numerical simulation of the dynamics of quantized vortices produced by coflow in a square channel using the vortex filament model. Unlike the situation in thermal counterflow, where the superfluid velocity $v_{\rm s}$ and normal-fluid velocity $v_{\rm n}$ flow in opposite directions, in coflow, $v_{\rm s}$ and $v_{\rm n}$ flow in the same direction. Quantum turbulence in thermal counterflow has been long studied theoretically and experimentally, and its various features have been revealed. In recent years, an experiment on quantum turbulence in coflow has been performed to observe different features of thermal counterflow. By supposing that $v_{\rm s}$ is uniform and $v_{\rm n}$ takes the Hagen-Poiseuille profile, which is different from the experiment where $v_{\rm n}$ is thought to be turbulent, we calculate the coflow turbulence. Vortices preferentially accumulate on the surface of a cylinder for $v_{\rm s} \simeq v_{\rm n}$ by mutual friction; namely, the coflow turbulence has an attractor. How strongly the vortices are attracted depends on the temperature and velocity. The length of the vortices increases as the vortices protruding from the cylindrical attractor continue to wrap around it. As the vortices become dense on the attractor, they spread toward its interior by their repulsive interaction. Then, the superfluid velocity profile induced by the vortices gradually mimics the normal-fluid velocity profile. This is an indication of velocity matching, which is an important feature of coflow turbulence.

Bogoliubov-wave turbulence in Bose-Einstein condensates

We theoretically and numerically study Bogoliubov-wave turbulence in three-dimensional atomic Bose-Einstein condensates with the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, investigating three spectra for the macroscopic wave function, the density distribution, and the Bogoliubov-wave distribution. In this turbulence, Bogoliubov waves play an important role in the behavior of these spectra, so that we call it Bogoliubov-wave turbulence. In a previous study [D. Proment \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. A \textbf{80}, 051603(R) (2009)], a $-3/2$ power law in the spectrum for the macroscopic wave function was suggested by using weak wave turbulence theory, but we find that another $-7/2$ power law appears in both theoretical and numerical calculations. Furthermore, we focus on the spectrum for the density distribution, which can be observed in experiments, discussing the possibility of experimental observation. Through these analytical and numerical calculations, we also demonstrate that the previously neglected condensate dynamics induced by the Bogoliubov waves is remarkably important.

Direct and inverse cascades of spin-wave turbulence in spin-1 ferromagnetic spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

We theoretically and numerically study spin-wave turbulence in spin-1 ferromagnetic spinor Bose-Einstein condensates, finding direct and inverse cascades with power-law behavior. To derive these power exponents analytically, the conventional weak wave turbulence theory is applied to the spin-1 spinor Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Thus, we obtain the $-7/3$ and $-5/3$ power laws in the transverse spin correlation function for the direct and inverse cascades, respectively. To confirm these power laws, numerical calculations are performed that obtain results consistent with these power laws.

Logarithmic velocity profile of quantum turbulence of superfluid $^4$He

The logarithmic velocity profile is the most important statistical law of classical turbulence affected by channel walls. This paper demonstrates numerically that the logarithmic velocity profile of a superfluid flow appears in quantum turbulence under pure normal flow in a channel. We investigated the configuration and dynamics of an inhomogeneous vortex tangle affected by the walls, and found the characteristic behavior of the log-law.

Counterflow quantum turbulence of He II in a square channel: Numerical analysis with nonuniform flows of the normal fluid

We perform a numerical analysis of counterflow quantum turbulence of superfluid 4He with nonuni- form flows by using the vortex filament model. In recent visualization experiments nonuniform laminar flows of the normal fluid, namely, Hagen-Poiseuille flow and tail-flattened flow, have been observed. Tail-flattened flow is a novel laminar flow in which the outer part of the Hagen-Poiseuille flow becomes flat. In our simulation, the velocity field of the normal fluid is prescribed to be two nonuniform profiles. This work addresses a square channel to obtain important physics not revealed in the preceding numerical works. In the studies of the two profiles we analyze the statistics of the physical quantities. Under Hagen-Poiseuille flow, inhomogeneous quantum turbulence appears as a statistically steady state. The vortex tangle shows a characteristic space-time oscillation. Under tail-flattened flow, the nature of the quantum turbulence depends strongly on that flatness. Vortex line density increases significantly as the profile becomes flatter, being saturated above a certain flatness. The inhomogeneity is significantly reduced in comparison to the case of Hagen-Poiseuille flow. Investigating the behavior of quantized vortices reveals that tail-flattened flow is an intermedi- ate state between Hagen-Poiseuille flow and uniform flow. In both profiles we obtain a characteristic inhomogeneity in the physical quantities, which suggests that a boundary layer of superfluid appears near a solid boundary. The vortex tangle produces a velocity field opposite to the applied superfluid flow, and, consequently, the superfluid flow becomes smaller than the applied one.

Spin-superflow turbulence in spin-1 ferromagnetic spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

Spin-superflow turbulence (SST) in spin-1 ferromagnetic spinor Bose-Einstein condensates is theoretically and numerically studied by using the spinor Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equations. SST is turbulence in which the disturbed spin and superfluid velocity fields are coupled. Applying the Kolmogorov-type dimensional scaling analysis to the hydrodynamic equations of spin and velocity fields, we theoretically find that the -5/3 and -7/3 power laws appear in spectra of the superflow kinetic and the spin-dependent interaction energy, respectively. Our numerical calculation of the GP equations confirms SST with the coexistence of disturbed spin and superfluid velocity field with two power laws.

Counterflow quantum turbulence in a square channel under the normal fluid with a Poiseuille flow

We perform a numerical analysis of superfluid turbulence produced by thermal counterflow in He II by using the vortex filament model. Counterflow in a low aspect ratio channel is known to show the transition from laminar flow to the two turbulent states TI and TII. The present understanding is that the TI has the turbulent superfluid and the laminar normal fluid but both fluids are turbulent in the TII state. This work studies the vortex tangle in the TI state. Solid boundary condition is applied to walls of a square channel, and the velocity field of the normal fluid is prescribed to be a laminar Poiseuille profile. An inhomogeneous vortex tangle, which concentrates near the solid boundaries, is obtained as the statistically steady state. It is sustained by its characteristic space-time oscillation. The inhomogeneity of the vortex tangle shows the characteristic dependence on temperature, which is caused by two competitive effects, namely the profile of the counterflow velocity and the mutual friction.
