Clustering of point vortices in a periodic box

The Monte Carlo simulation of $N$ point vortices with square periodic boundary conditions is performed where $N$ is order of 100. The clustering property is examined by computing the $L$ function familiar in the field of spatial ecology. The case of a positive value of $L$ corresponds to the state of clustering and the Onsager's negative temperature.

Double Periodicity and Frequency-Locking in the Langford Equation

The bifurcation structure of the Langford equation is studied numerically in detail. Periodic, doubly-periodic, and chaotic solutions and the routes to chaos via coexistence of double periodicity and period-doubling bifurcations are found by the Poincaré plot of successive maxima of the first mode $x_1$. Frequency-locked periodic solutions corresponding to the Farey sequence $F_n$ are examined up to $n=14$. Period-doubling bifurcations appears on some of the periodic solutions and the similarity of bifurcation structures between the sine-circle map and the Langford equation is shown. A method to construct the Poincaré section for triple periodicity is proposed.

Point Process Analysis of Vortices in a Periodic Box

The motion of assemblies of point vortices in a periodic parallelogram can be described by the complex position $z_j(t)$ whose time derivative is given by the sum of the complex velocities induced by other vortices and the solid rotation centered at $z_j$. A numerical simulation up to 100 vortices in a square periodic box is performed with various initial conditions, including single and double rows, uniform spacing, checkered pattern, and complete spatial randomness. Point process theory in spatial ecology is applied in order to quantify clustering of the distribution of vortices. In many cases, clustering of the distribution persists after a long time if the initial condition is clustered. In the case of positive and negative vortices with the same absolute value of strength, the $L$ function becomes positive for both types of vortices. Scattering or recoupling of pairs of vortices by a third vortex is remarkable.

Clustering Analysis of Periodic Point Vortices with the $L$ Function

A motion of point vortices with periodic boundary conditions is studied by using Weierstrass zeta functions. Scattering and recoupling of a vortex pair by a third vortex becomes remarkable when the vortex density is large. Clustering of vortices with various initial conditions is quantitated by the $L$ function used in point process theory in spatial ecology. It is shown that clustering persists if it is initially clustered like an infinite row or a checkered pattern.

Bifurcations and Chaos in the Six-Dimensional Turbulence Model of Gledzer

The cascade-shell model of turbulence with six real variables originated by Gledzer is studied numerically using Mathematica 5.1. Periodic, doubly-periodic and chaotic solutions and the routes to chaos via both frequency-locking and period-doubling are found by the Poincaré plot of the first mode $v_1$. The circle map on the torus is well approximated by the summation of several sinusoidal functions. The dependence of the rotation number on the viscosity parameter is in accordance with that of the sine-circle map. The complicated bifurcation structure and the revival of a stable periodic solution at the smaller viscosity parameter in the present model indicates that the turbulent state may be very sensitive to the Reynolds number.

Scattering of dislocated wavefronts by vertical vorticity and the Aharonov-Bohm effect I: Shallow water

When a surface wave interacts with a vertical vortex in shallow water the latter induces a dislocation in the incident wavefronts that is analogous to what happens in the Aharonov-Bohm effect for the scattering of electrons by a confined magnetic field. In addition to this global similarity between these two physical systems there is scattering. This paper reports a detailed calculation of this scattering, which is quantitatively different from the electronic case in that a surface wave penetrates the inside of a vortex while electrons do not penetrate a solenoid. This difference, together with an additional difference in the equations that govern both physical systems lead to a quite different scattering in the case of surface waves, whose main characteristic is a strong asymmetry in the scattering cross section. The assumptions and approximations under which these effects happen are carefully considered, and their applicability to the case of scattering of acoustic waves by vorticity is noted.

On the Probability Distribution of Velocity Circulation in Three-Dimensional Turbulence

The probability distribution functions of the circulation of velocity in three-dimensional decaying isotropic turbulence are examined by the database of the numerical simulation based on the pseudospectral method. It is shown that the standard deviation increases nearly as $A^{2/3}$ where $A$ is the area of the loop. The PDFs change from exponential to gaussian as the size becomes large. The former agrees well with the prediction by Migdal (1993), although the latter does not match. A modification is proposed to explain the gaussian distribution with the $A^{2/3}$ dependence.
