KKR 18: A Late Arrival Galaxy?

KKR 18 is a dwarf irregular galaxy in the Local Void at a distance of 9.46 Mpc. It is gas rich and was experiencing vigorous star formation 20 - 100 Myr ago. Its metallicity is 4% of Solar from an emission spectrum, qualifying is as extremely metal poor (XMP). Its most remarkable characteristic is an extremely deficient Red Giant Branch. This feature is shared with a small number of other dwarf galaxies and it is inferred that they lack ancient stellar components. It is suggested that these are late arrival galaxies (LAG).

Optical identification of the FASHI sources: toward the extended Local Volume

We extracted a list of 662 nearby (within $\sim16$ Mpc) HI-detection sources from the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) All Sky HI Survey (FASHI) and made a visual identification of them with optical counterpart. This inspection led to the discovery of 71 new dwarf galaxies. All of them are dwarf irregular galaxies with ongoing star formation. They are characterized by the following median parameters: visual magnitude of $g=17.8$ mag and color $(g-r)=0.29$ mag, HI-flux $S_\mathrm{HI}=718$ mJy km/s, HI-mass $M_\mathrm{HI}=3.7\times10^7$ $M_\odot$, as well as the HI line-width of $W_{50}=37$ km/s.

The TRGB-SBF Project. IV. A Color Calibration of the TRGB in the JWST F090W+F150W Filters

Observations with JWST in the F090W band provide a powerful tool for determining galaxy distances based on tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) measurements. It is a great convenience that the TRGB lies at an almost constant absolute magnitude level at low metallicities. However, the TRGB becomes fainter at high metallicities in the F090W filter. Details of this break in slope are critical for precision applications in the acquisition of distances. With an absolute scaling set by the maser distance to NGC 4258 (but excluding the uncertainty in that distance), the value $M^\mathrm{TRGB}_\mathrm{F090W} = -4.40 \pm 0.03$ mag (traditional Vega) is found for $(\mathrm{F090W}-\mathrm{F150W})_0<1.65$ mag. The theoretical RGB isochrone that reaches the color 1.65 at the RGB tip corresponds to metallicity $[M/H] = -0.57$ for a 10 Gyr population. The calibration is used to derive distances for 16 galaxies relative to the megamaser host NGC 4258. Revised distances are on average slightly closer than literature values derived from the same data.

100 Proof: HI Observations of 100 Nearby Dwarf Galaxies with the 100-meter Green Bank Telescope

We describe the results of observations with the 100m Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT) in the HI line of 105 nearby dwarf galaxies, 60 of which were discovered recently in the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys. Of 105 objects observed, we detected 77 galaxies with the following median parameters: an HI-flux of 0.69 Jy km/s, a heliocentric velocity of 732 km/s, and a $W_{50}$ line width of 32 km/s. 70 are isolated late-type objects and 35 are new probable satellites of nearby spiral galaxies (NGC 628, NGC 2787, NGC 3556, NGC 4490, NGC 4594 and NGC 5055). The detected galaxies are predominantly gas-rich systems with a median gas-to-stellar-mass ratio of 1.87. In general, they follow the classic Tully-Fisher relation obtained for large disk-dominated spiral galaxies if their $M_{21}$ magnitudes are used instead of B-magnitudes.

The TRGB-SBF Project. II. Resolving the Virgo Cluster with JWST

The Virgo Cluster is the nearest substantial cluster of galaxies to the Milky Way and a cornerstone of the extragalactic distance scale. Here, we present JWST/NIRCam observations that simultaneously cover the cores and halos of ten galaxies in and around the Virgo Cluster and are designed to perform simultaneous measurements of the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) and surface brightness fluctuations (SBF). Seven of the targets are within the Virgo Cluster and where we are able to resolve some of the cluster's substructure, while an additional three provide important constraints on Virgo infall. The seven galaxies within Virgo itself all have SBF measurements from the Advanced Camera for Surveys Virgo Cluster Survey (ACSVCS). After adjusting the ACSVCS measurements for the offset from our new JWST TRGB measurements, we determine a distance to the Virgo Cluster of d $=$ 16.17 $\pm$ 0.25 (stat) $\pm$ 0.47 (sys) Mpc. The work presented here is part of a larger program to develop a Population II distance scale through the TRGB and SBF that is completely independent of the prominent Cepheid + Type Ia supernova ladder. The TRGB distances to the galaxies presented here, when combined with future SBF measurements, will provide a crucial step forward for determining whether or not systematic errors can explain the well-known "Hubble tension'' or if there is significant evidence for cracks in the $Λ$CDM model.
