Flexibility of the Hamiltonian adjoint action and classification of bi-invariant metrics

On an open, connected symplectic manifold $(M,ω)$, the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms forms an infinite-dimensional Fréchet Lie group with Lie algebra $C^{\infty}_c(M)$ and adjoint action given by pullbacks. We prove that this action is flexible: for any non-constant $u \in C^{\infty}(M)$, every $f \in C^{\infty}_c(M)$ can be expressed as a weighted finite sum of elements from the adjoint orbit of $u$, with total weight bounded by constant multiple of $\|f\|_{\infty} + \|f\|_{L^1}$. Consequently, all $\mathrm{Ham}(M,ω)$-invariant norms on $C^{\infty}_c(M)$ are dominated by a sum of $L^{\infty}$ and $L^1$ norms. As an application, we classify up to equivalence all bi-invariant pseudo-metrics on the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of an exact symplectic manifold, answering a question of Eliashberg and Polterovich.

$C^0$-Contact Geometry of Surfaces in 3-Manifolds

We prove that contact homeomorphisms preserve characteristic foliations on surfaces in contact $3$-manifolds. More precisely, since the characteristic foliation is a singular $1$-dimensional foliation, we show that singular points are mapped to singular points, and that the image of every $1$-dimensional leaf is again a $1$-dimensional leaf in the image surface. As a consequence, regular coisotropic surfaces are $C^0$-rigid. In contrast, we show that contact convexity is $C^0$-flexible by constructing a contact homeomorphism that sends a convex $2$-torus to a non-convex one.

Flexibility of the adjoint action of the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms

On a closed and connected symplectic manifold, the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms has the structure of an infinite-dimensional Fréchet Lie group, where the Lie algebra is naturally identified with the space of smooth and zero-mean normalized functions, and the adjoint action is given by pullbacks. We show that this action is flexible: for every non-zero smooth and zero-mean normalized function $ u $, any other smooth and zero-mean function $ f $ can be written as a finite sum of elements in the orbit of $u$ under the adjoint action. Additionally, the number of elements in this sum is dominated by the uniform norm of $f$. This result can be interpreted as a (bounded) infinitesimal version of Banyaga's theorem on the simplicity of the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms.

New steps in $C^0$ symplectic and contact geometry of smooth submanifolds

We provide a $C^0$ counterexample to the Lagrangian Arnold conjecture in the cotangent bundle of a closed manifold. Additionally, we prove a quantitative $h$-principle for subcritical isotropic embeddings in contact manifolds, and provide an explicit construction of a contact homeomorphism which takes a subcritical isotropic curve to a transverse one. On the rigid side, we give another proof of the Dimitroglou Rizell and Sullivan theorem \cite{RS22} which states that Legendrian knots are preserved by contact homeomorphisms, provided their image is smooth. Moreover, our method gives related examples of rigidity in higher dimensions as well.
