Free boundary regularity for a spectral optimal partition problem with volume and inclusion constraints

This paper is devoted to a complete characterization of the free boundary of all solutions to the following spectral $k$-partition problem with measure and inclusion constraints: \[ \inf \left\{\sum_{i=1}^k λ_1(ω_i)\; : \; ω_i \subset Ω\mbox{ are nonempty open sets for all } i=1,\ldots, k,\; ω_i \cap ω_j = \emptyset \: \text{for all}\: i \not=j \mbox{ and } \sum_{i=1}^{k}|ω_i| = a \right\}, \] where $Ω$ is a bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^N$, $a\in (0,|Ω|)$. In particular, we prove free boundary conditions, classify contact points, characterize the regular and singular part of the free boundary (including branching points), and describe the interaction of the partition with the fixed boundary $\partial Ω$. The proof is based on a perturbed version of the problem, combined with monotonicity formulas, blowup analysis and classification of blowups, suitable deformations of optimal sets and eigenfunctions, as well as the improvement of flatness of [Russ-Trey-Velichkov, CVPDE 58, 2019] for the one-phase points, and of [De Philippis-Spolaor-Velichkov, Invent. Math. 225, 2021] at two-phase points.

Higher regularity estimates for solutions to $\infty$-Laplacian-type models

In this work, we tackle the higher regularity estimates of solutions to inhomogeneous $\infty-$Laplacian equations at interior critical points. Our estimates provide smoothness properties better than the corresponding available regularity for the model with bounded forcing terms. We explore several scenarios, thereby obtaining improved regularity estimates, which depend on the universal parameters of the model. Our findings connect with nowadays well-known estimates developed for obstacle and dead-core type problems.

Optimal Regularity for Fully Nonlinear Nonlocal Equations with Unbounded Source Terms

We prove optimal regularity estimates for viscosity solutions to a class of fully nonlinear nonlocal equations with unbounded source terms. More precisely, depending on the integrability of the source term $f \in L^p(B_1)$, we establish that solutions belong to classes ranging from $C^{σ-d/p}$ to $C^σ$, at critical thresholds. We use approximation techniques and Liouville-type arguments. These results represent a novel contribution, providing the first such estimates in the context of not necessarily concave nonlocal equations.

Schauder and Calderón-Zygmund type estimates for fully nonlinear parabolic equations under "small ellipticity aperture" and applications

In this manuscript, we derive Schauder estimates for viscosity solutions to non-convex fully nonlinear second-order parabolic equations \[ \partial_t u - F(x, t,D^2u) = f (x, t) \quad \text{in} \quad \mathrm{Q}_1 = B_1 \times (-1, 0], \] provided that the source $f$ and the coefficients of $F$ are Hölder continuous functions and $F$ enjoys a small ellipticity aperture. Furthermore, for problems with merely bounded data, we prove that such solutions are $C^{1, \text{Log-Lip}}$ smooth in the parabolic metric. We also address Calderón-Zygmund estimates for such a class of non-convex operators. Finally, we connect our findings with recent estimates for fully nonlinear models in certain solution classes.

Spectral partition problems with volume and inclusion constraints

In this paper, we discuss a class of spectral partition problems with a measure constraint, for partitions of a given bounded connected open set. We establish the existence of an optimal open partition, showing that the corresponding eigenfunctions are locally Lipschitz continuous, and obtain some qualitative properties for the partition. The proof uses an equivalent weak formulation that involves a minimization problem of a penalized functional where the variables are functions rather than domains, suitable deformations, blowup techniques, and a monotonicity formula.

Sharp regularity estimates for a singular inhomogeneous (m, p)-Laplacian equation

In this paper, we investigate a class of doubly nonlinear evolutions PDEs. We establish sharp regularity for the solutions in Hölder spaces. The proof is based on the geometric tangential method and intrinsic scaling technique. Our findings extend and recover the results in the context of the classical evolution PDEs with singular signature via a unified treatment in the slow, normal and fast diffusion regimes. In addition, we provide some applications to certain nonlinear evolution models, which may have their own mathematical interest.

Regularity estimates for fully nonlinear integro-differential equations with nonhomogeneous degeneracy

We investigate the regularity of the solutions for a class of degenerate/singular fully nonlinear nonlocal equations. In the degenerate scenario, we establish that there exists at least one viscosity solution of class $C_{loc}^{1, α}$, for some constant $α\in (0, 1)$. In addition, under suitable conditions on $σ$, we prove regularity estimates in Hölder spaces for any viscosity solution. We also examine the singular setting and prove Hölder regularity estimates for the gradient of the solutions.

Hölder regularity for non-variational porous media type equations

We present a Krylov-Safonov theory approach for the Hölder regularity of viscosity solutions to non-variational porous media type equations. We explore the peculiarity of this type of problem: either the equation falls in a uniformly elliptic regime or the eikonal mechanism takes care of the regularity. Our techniques are based on sliding paraboloids resulting in an ABP-type measure estimate. By combining such estimates, a diminishing of oscillation property is available, resulting in a regularity control in Hölder spaces.

Fractional Sobolev regularity for fully nonlinear elliptic equations

We prove higher-order fractional Sobolev regularity for fully nonlinear, uniformly elliptic equations in the presence of unbounded source terms. More precisely, we show the existence of a universal number $0< \varepsilon <1$, depending only on ellipticity constants and dimension, such that if $u$ is a viscosity solution of $F(D^2u) = f(x) \in L^p$, then $u\in W^{1+\varepsilon,p}$, with appropriate estimates. Our strategy suggests a sort of fractional feature of fully nonlinear diffusion processes, as what we actually show is that $F(D^2u) \in L^p \implies (-Δ)^θu \in L^p$, for a universal constant $\frac{1}{2} < θ<1$. We believe our techniques are flexible and can be adapted to various models and contexts.

Geometric regularity theory for a time-dependent Isaacs equation

The purpose of this work is to produce a regularity theory for a class of parabolic Isaacs equations. Our techniques are based on approximation methods which allow us to connect our problem with a Bellman parabolic model. An approximation regime for the coefficients, combined with a smallness condition on the source term unlocks new regularity results in Sobolev and Hölder spaces.

Improved regularity for the parabolic normalized p-Laplace equation

We derive regularity estimates for viscosity solutions to the parabolic normalized p-Laplace. By using approximation methods and scaling arguments for the normalized p-parabolic operator, we show that the gradient of bounded viscosity solutions is locally asymptotically Lipschitz continuous when $p$ is sufficiently close to 2. In addition, we establish regularity estimates in Sobolev spaces.

A fully nonlinear free transmission problem

We examine a free transmission problem driven by fully nonlinear elliptic operators. Since the transmission interface is determined endogeneously, our analysis is two-fold: we study the regularity of the solutions and some geometric properties of the free boundary. By relating our problem with a pair of viscosity inequalities, we prove that strong solutions are of class $C ^{1,1}$, locally. As regards the free boundary, we start by establishing weak results, such as its non-degeneracy, and proceed with the characterization of global solutions.

Improved regularity for the $p$-Poisson equation

In this paper we produce new, optimal, regularity results for the solutions to $p$-Poisson equations. We argue through a delicate approximation method, under a smallness regime for the exponent $p$, that imports information from a limiting profile driven by the Laplace operator. Our arguments contain a novelty of technical interest, namely a sequential stability result; it connects the solutions to $p$-Poisson equations with harmonic functions, yielding improved regularity for the former. Our findings relate a smallness regime with improved $\mathcal{C}^{1,1-}$-estimates in the presence of $L^\infty$-source terms.

Improved regularity for the porous medium equation along zero level-sets

In the present work we establish sharp regularity estimates for the solutions of the porous medium equation, along their zero level-sets. We work under a proximity regime on the exponent governing the nonlinearity of the problem. Then, we prove that solutions are locally of class $\mathcal{C}^{1-,\frac{1}{2}-}$ along free boundary points $x_0\in \partial\left\lbrace u>0\right\rbrace$, both in time and space. Our argument consists of importing information from the heat equation, through approximation and localization methods.

Geometric regularity for elliptic equations in double-divergence form

In this paper, we examine the regularity of the solutions to the double-divergence equation. We establish improved Hölder continuity as solutions approach their zero level-sets. In fact, we prove that $α$-Hölder continuous coefficients lead to solutions of class $\mathcal{C}^{1^-}$, locally. Under the assumption of Sobolev differentiable coefficients, we establish regularity in the class $\mathcal{C}^{1,1^-}$. Our results unveil improved continuity along a nonphysical free boundary, where the weak formulation of the problem vanishes. We argue through a geometric set of techniques, implemented by approximation methods. Such methods connect our problem of interest with a target profile. An iteration procedure imports information from this limiting configuration to the solutions of the double-divergence equation.
