Mean-field phase diagrams of spinor bosons in an optical cavity

The plethora of possible ground states of spinor bosons placed in an external lattice and a cavity is revisited. We discuss the simplest case when the external lattice nodes coincide with the antinodes of the cavity field. We analyze the problem within the grand-canonical mean-field approach, considering both the homogeneous system and the nonhomogeneous case with a harmonic trapping potential. Due to the spin degree of freedom, in the homogeneous case we treat the system in a twofold manner: we impose the physically relevant total-magnetization constraint, while also discussing the minimization landscape for the full unconstrained problem. In the latter, by combining analytical arguments with numerical calculations based on the Gutzwiller ansatz, we show that the system exhibits two types of magnetic phases: an antiferromagnetic Mott insulator (AFM) and a ferromagnetic density wave (FDW). In addition, three distinct supersolid phases emerge, characterized by different patterns of spin and density imbalances. In case of the zero total magnetization, only two of the three supersolid regimes survive, and the FDW phases are replaced by NOON density waves (NDW). These new ground states present density-modulated quantum superpositions of the underlying spin components of the bosons. Finally, we present the phase diagram of the trapped system, which is directly relevant for future experiments.

Facets of Many Body Localization

Many-body localization (MBL) appears to be a robust example of ergodicity breaking in many-body interacting systems. Here, we review different aspects of MBL, concentrating on various ways the disorder may be introduced into the system studied. In particular, we consider both the random and quasiperiodic diagonal (i.e., on-site) disorder as well as bond disorder as realized in randomly distributed atoms interacting via long-range interactions. We also review the quantum sun model, which seems to be the ideal, albeit artificial, model exhibiting MBL.

Interplay of localization and topology in disordered dimerized array of Rydberg atoms

Rydberg tweezer arrays provide a platform for realizing spin-1/2 Hamiltonians with long-range tunneling that decays as a power law with distance. We numerically investigate the effects of positional disorder and dimerization on the properties of excited states in such a one-dimensional system. Our model allows for continuous tuning of both the dimerization pattern and the disorder strength. Within the parameter space constrained by our geometry, we show that both mechanisms lead to a localized phase that does not resemble standard MBL. This phase can be understood as an ensemble of distinct Hilbert space fragmented realizations induced by small inter-spin separations. As dimerization is commonly associated with Symmetry Protected Topological (SPT) physics, we also examine the SPT states across the entire energy spectrum. Despite a partial spin-glass order, we argue that the system hosts an extensive fraction of SPT states.

Robust design under uncertainty in quantum error mitigation

Error mitigation techniques are crucial to achieving near-term quantum advantage. Classical post-processing of quantum computation outcomes is a popular approach for error mitigation, which includes methods such as Zero Noise Extrapolation, Virtual Distillation, and learning-based error mitigation. However, these techniques have limitations due to the propagation of uncertainty resulting from the finite shot number of a quantum measurement. In this work, we introduce general and unbiased methods for quantifying the uncertainty and error of error-mitigated observables based on the strategic sampling of error mitigation outcomes. We then extend our approach to demonstrate the optimization of performance and robustness of error mitigation under uncertainty. To illustrate our methods, we apply them to Zero Noise Extrapolation and Clifford Date Regression in the ground state of the XY model simulated using depolarizing and IBM Toronto noise models, respectively. In particular, we optimize the choice of noise levels and the allocation of shots for Zero Noise Extrapolation and the distribution of the training circuits for Clifford Data Regression. While our methods are readily applicable to any post-processing-based error mitigation approach, in practice they must not be prohibitively expensive -- even though they perform optimizations of the error mitigation hyperparameters requiring sampling of a statistical distribution of error mitigation outcomes. By leveraging surrogate-based optimization, we show that our methods can efficiently perform optimal design for a Zero Noise Extrapolation implementation. We then further demonstrate the transferability of learned Zero Noise Extrapolation hyperparameters to other similar circuits.
