Spherical means on the Heisenberg group: Stability of a maximal function estimate

Consider the surface measure $μ$ on a sphere in a nonvertical hyperplane on the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^n$, $n\ge 2$, and the convolution $f*μ$. Form the associated maximal function $Mf=\sup_{t>0}|f*μ_t|$ generated by the automorphic dilations. We use decoupling inequalities due to Wolff and Bourgain-Demeter to prove $L^p$-boundedness of $M$ in an optimal range.

Some Problems in Harmonic Analysis

In May 2016, we organized a conference in harmonic analysis in honor of Professor Michael Christ, on the campus of the University of Wisconsin in Madison. We are happy to present sixteen open problems, almost all of which were contributed by participants of a problem session held in the afternoon of May 19, 2016.

Large Sets Avoiding Patterns

We construct subsets of Euclidean space of large Hausdorff dimension and full Minkowski dimension that do not contain nontrivial patterns described by the zero sets of functions. The results are of two types. Given a countable collection of $v$-variate vector-valued functions $f_q : (\mathbb{R}^{n})^v \to \mathbb{R}^m$ satisfying a mild regularity condition, we obtain a subset of $\mathbb{R}^n$ of Hausdorff dimension $\frac{m}{v-1}$ that avoids the zeros of $f_q$ for every $q$. We also find a set that simultaneously avoids the zero sets of a family of uncountably many functions sharing the same linearization. In contrast with previous work, our construction allows for non-polynomial functions as well as uncountably many patterns. In addition, it highlights the dimensional dependence of the avoiding set on $v$, the number of input variables.

A Roth type theorem for dense subsets of $\mathbb{R}^d$

Let $1 < p < \infty$, $p\neq 2$. We prove that if $d\geq d_p$ is sufficiently large, and $A\subs\R^d$ is a measurable set of positive upper density then there exists $\la_0=\la_0(A)$ such for all $\la\geq\la_0$ there are $x,y\in\R^d$ such that $\{x,x+y,x+2y\}\subs A$ and $|y|_p=\la$, where $||y||_p=(\sum_i |y_i|^p)^{1/p}$ is the $l^p(\mathbb R^d)$-norm of a point $y=(y_1,\ldots,y_d)\in\R^d$. This means that dense subsets of $\R^d$ contain 3-term progressions of all sufficiently large gaps when the gap size is measured in the $l^p$-metric. This statement is known to be false in the Euclidean $l^2$-metric as well as in the $l^1$ and $\ell^{\infty}$-metrics. One of the goals of this note is to understand this phenomenon. A distinctive feature of the proof is the use of multilinear singular integral operators, widely studied in classical time-frequency analysis, in the estimation of forms counting configurations.

A Discrete Carleson Theorem Along the Primes with a Restricted Supremum

Consider the discrete maximal function acting on finitely supported functions on the integers, \[ \mathcal{C}_Λf(n) := \sup_{λ\in Λ} | \sum_{p \in \pm \mathbb{P}} f(n-p) \log |p| \frac{e^{2πi λp}}{p} |,\] where $\pm \mathbb{P} := \{ \pm p : p \text{ is a prime} \}$, and $Λ\subset [0,1]$. We give sufficient conditions on $Λ$, met by (finite unions of) lacunary sets, for this to be a bounded sublinear operator on $\ell^p(\mathbb{Z})$ for $\frac{3}{2} < p < 4$.

On polynomial configurations in fractal sets

We show that subsets of $\mathbb{R}^n$ of large enough Hausdorff and Fourier dimension contain polynomial patterns of the form \begin{align*} ( x ,\, x + A_1 y ,\, \dots,\, x + A_{k-1} y ,\, x + A_k y + Q(y) e_n ), \quad x \in \mathbb{R}^n,\ y \in \mathbb{R}^m, \end{align*} where $A_i$ are real $n \times m$ matrices, $Q$ is a real polynomial in $m$ variables and $e_n = (0,\dots,0,1)$.

On necklaces inside thin subsets of ${\Bbb R}^d$

We study similarity classes of point configurations in $\R^d$. Given a finite collection of points, a well-known question is: How high does the Hausdorff dimension $\hd(E)$ of a compact set $E \subset {\Bbb R}^d$, $d \ge 2$, need to be to ensure that $E$ contains some similar copy of this configuration? We prove results for a related problem, showing that for $\hd(D)$ sufficiently large, $E$ must contain many point configurations that we call $k$-necklaces of constant gap, generalizing equilateral triangles and rhombuses in higher dimensions. Our results extend and complement those in \cite{CLP14,BIT14}, where related questions were recently studied.

Lacunarity, Kakeya-type sets and directional maximal operators

We develop a notion of finite order lacunarity for direction sets in $\mathbb R^{d+1}$. Given a direction set $Ω$ that is sublacunary according to this definition, we construct random examples of Euclidean sets that contain unit line segments with directions from $Ω$ and enjoy analytical features similar to those of traditional Kakeya sets of infinitesimal Lebesgue measure. This generalizes to higher dimensions a planar result due to Bateman. Combined with earlier work of Alfonseca, Bateman, Parcet and Rogers, this notion of lacunarity and Kakeya-type sets also yields a characterization in all dimensions for directional maximal operators to be $L^p$-bounded.

Kakeya-type sets over Cantor sets of directions in $\mathbb{R}^{d+1}$

Given a Cantor-type subset $Ω$ of a smooth curve in $\mathbb R^{d+1}$, we construct examples of sets that contain unit line segments with directions from $Ω$ and exhibit analytical features similar to those of classical Kakeya sets of arbitrarily small $(d+1)$-dimensional Lebesgue measure. The construction is based on probabilistic methods relying on the tree structure of $Ω$, and extends to higher dimensions an analogous planar result of Bateman and Katz. In particular, the existence of such sets implies that the directional maximal operator associated with the direction set $Ω$ is unbounded on $L^p(\mathbb{R}^{d+1})$ for all $1\leq p<\infty$.

Finite configurations in sparse sets

Let $E \subseteq R^n$ be a closed set of Hausdorff dimension $α$. For $m \geq n$, let $\{B_1,\ldots,B_k\}$ be $n \times (m-n)$ matrices. We prove that if the system of matrices $B_j$ is non-degenerate in a suitable sense, $α$ is sufficiently close to $n$, and if $E$ supports a probability measure obeying appropriate dimensionality and Fourier decay conditions, then for a range of $m$ depending on $n$ and $k$, the set $E$ contains a translate of a non-trivial $k$-point configuration $\{B_1y,\ldots,B_ky\}$. As a consequence, we are able to establish existence of certain geometric configurations in Salem sets (such as parallelograms in $ R^n$ and isosceles right triangles in $R^2$). This can be viewed as a multidimensional analogue of an earlier result of Laba and Pramanik on 3-term arithmetic progressions in subsets of $R$.

A multi-dimensional resolution of singularities with applications to analysis

We formulate a resolution of singularities algorithm for analyzing the zero sets of real-analytic functions in dimensions $\geq 3$. Rather than using the celebrated result of Hironaka, the algorithm is modeled on a more explicit and elementary approach used in the contemporary algebraic geometry literature. As an application, we define a new notion of the height of real-analytic functions, compute the critical integrability index and obtain the sharp growth rate of sublevel sets. This also leads to a characterization of the oscillation index of scalar oscillatory integrals with real-analytic phases in all dimensions.

Maximal operators and differentiation theorems for sparse sets

We study maximal averages associated with singular measures on $\rr$. Our main result is a construction of singular Cantor-type measures supported on sets of Hausdorff dimension $1 - ε$, $0 \leq ε< {1/3}$ for which the corresponding maximal operators are bounded on $L^p(\mathbb R)$ for $p > (1 + ε)/(1 - ε)$. As a consequence, we are able to answer a question of Aversa and Preiss on density and differentiation theorems in one dimension. Our proof combines probabilistic techniques with the methods developed in multidimensional Euclidean harmonic analysis, in particular there are strong similarities to Bourgain's proof of the circular maximal theorem in two dimensions. Updates: Andreas Seeger has provided an argument to the effect that our global maximal operators are in fact bounded on L^p(R) for all p>1; in particular, it follows that our differentiation theorems are also valid for all p>1. Furthermore, David Preiss has proved that no such differentiation theorems (let alone maximal estimates) can hold with p=1. These arguments are included in the new version. We have also improved the exposition in a number of places.

An FIO calculus for marine seismic imaging, II: Sobolev estimates

We establish sharp $L^2$-Sobolev estimates for classes of pseudodifferential operators with singular symbols whose non-pseudodifferential (Fourier integral operator) parts exhibit two-sided fold singularities. The operators considered include both singular integral operators along curves in $R^2$ with simple inflection points and normal operators arising in linearized seismic imaging in the presence of fold caustics.

Multilinear singular operators with fractional rank

We prove bounds for multilinear operators on $\R^d$ given by multipliers which are singular along a $k$ dimensional subspace. The new case of interest is when the rank $k/d$ is not an integer. Connections with the concept of {\em true complexity} from Additive Combinatorics are also investigated.

Arithmetic progressions in sets of fractional dimension

Let $E\subset\rr$ be a closed set of Hausdorff dimension $α$. We prove that if $α$ is sufficiently close to 1, and if $E$ supports a probabilistic measure obeying appropriate dimensionality and Fourier decay conditions, then $E$ contains non-trivial 3-term arithmetic progressions.

Oscillatory integral operators with homogeneous polynomial phases in several variables

We obtain $L^2$ decay estimates in $λ$ for oscillatory integral operators whose phase functions are homogeneous polynomials of degree m and satisfy various genericity assumptions. The decay rates obtained are optimal in the case of (2+2)--dimensions for any m while, in higher dimensions, the result is sharp for m sufficiently large. The proof for large $m$ follows from essentially algebraic considerations. For cubics in (2+2)--dimensions, the proof involves decomposing the operator near the conic zero variety of the determinant of the Hessian of the phase function, using an elaboration of the general approach of Phong and Stein [1994].

L^p regularity of averages over curves and bounds for associated maximal operators

We prove that for a finite type curve in $\mathbb R^3$ the maximal operator generated by dilations is bounded on $L^p$ for sufficiently large $p$. We also show the endpoint $L^p \to L^{p}_{1/p}$ regularity result for the averaging operators for large $p$. The proofs make use of a deep result of Thomas Wolff about decompositions of cone multipliers.
