Probability matching priors for some parameters of the bivariate normal distribution

This paper develops some objective priors for certain parameters of the bivariate normal distribution. The parameters considered are the regression coefficient, the generalized variance, and the ratio of the conditional variance of one variable given the other to the marginal variance of the other variable. The criterion used is the asymptotic matching of coverage probabilities of Bayesian credible intervals with the corresponding frequentist coverage probabilities. The paper uses various matching criteria, namely, quantile matching, matching of distribution functions, highest posterior density matching, and matching via inversion of test statistics. One particular prior is found which meets all the matching criteria individually for all the parameters of interest.

Robust estimation in finite population sampling

The paper proposes some robust estimators of the finite population mean. Such estimators are particularly suitable in the presence of some outlying observations. Included as special cases of our general result are robust versions of the ratio estimator and the Horvitz-Thompson estimator. The robust estimators are derived on the basis of certain predictive influence functions.

Design Issues for Generalized Linear Models: A Review

Generalized linear models (GLMs) have been used quite effectively in the modeling of a mean response under nonstandard conditions, where discrete as well as continuous data distributions can be accommodated. The choice of design for a GLM is a very important task in the development and building of an adequate model. However, one major problem that handicaps the construction of a GLM design is its dependence on the unknown parameters of the fitted model. Several approaches have been proposed in the past 25 years to solve this problem. These approaches, however, have provided only partial solutions that apply in only some special cases, and the problem, in general, remains largely unresolved. The purpose of this article is to focus attention on the aforementioned dependence problem. We provide a survey of various existing techniques dealing with the dependence problem. This survey includes discussions concerning locally optimal designs, sequential designs, Bayesian designs and the quantile dispersion graph approach for comparing designs for GLMs.

Nonsubjective priors via predictive relative entropy regret

We explore the construction of nonsubjective prior distributions in Bayesian statistics via a posterior predictive relative entropy regret criterion. We carry out a minimax analysis based on a derived asymptotic predictive loss function and show that this approach to prior construction has a number of attractive features. The approach here differs from previous work that uses either prior or posterior relative entropy regret in that we consider predictive performance in relation to alternative nondegenerate prior distributions. The theory is illustrated with an analysis of some specific examples.
