Global aspects of double geometry

We consider the concept of a generalised manifold in the O(d,d) setting, i.e., in double geometry. The conjecture by Hohm and Zwiebach for the form of finite generalised diffeomorphisms is shown to hold. Transition functions on overlaps are defined. Triple overlaps are trivial concerning their action on coordinates, but non-trivial on fields, including the generalised metric. A generalised manifold is an ordinary manifold, but the generalised metric on the manifold carries a gerbe structure. We show how the abelian behaviour of the gerbe is embedded in the non-abelian T-duality group. We also comment on possibilities and difficulties in the U-duality setting.

Localization on the Landscape and Eternal Inflation

We investigate the validity of the assertion that eternal inflation populates the landscape of string theory. We verify that bubble solutions do not satisfy the Klein Gordon equation for the landscape potential. Solutions to the landscape potential within the formalism of quantum cosmology are Anderson localized wavefunctions. Those are inconsistent with inflating bubble solutions. The physical reasons behind the failure of a relation between eternal inflation and the landscape are rooted in quantum phenomena such as interference between wavefunction concentrated around the various vacua in the landscape.

E8 duality and dual gravity

We construct the non-linear realisation of the E8 motion group and compare this with the bosonic sector of eleven dimensional supergravity. The construction naturally leads to the introduction of a new potential field. We identify this new field with the dual gravity field by considering the reduction of the eleven-dimensional theory to three dimensions.

The O_{D,D} Geometry of String Theory

We construct an action for double field theory using a metric connection that is compatible with both the generalised metric and the O_{D,D} structure. The connection is simultaneously torsionful and flat. Using this connection one may construct a proper covariant derivative for double field theory. We then write the doubled action in terms of the generalised torsion of this connection. This action then exactly reproduces that required for doubled field theory and gauged supergravity.

Duality Invariant Actions and Generalised Geometry

We construct the non-linear realisation of the semi-direct product of E(11) and its first fundamental representation at lowest order and appropriate to spacetime dimensions four to seven. This leads to a non-linear realisation of the duality groups and introduces fields that depend on a generalised space which possess a generalised vielbein. We focus on the part of the generalised space on which the duality groups alone act and construct an invariant action.

The local symmetries of M-theory and their formulation in generalised geometry

In the doubled field theory approach to string theory, the T-duality group is promoted to a manifest symmetry at the expense of replacing ordinary Riemannian geometry with generalised geometry on a doubled space. The local symmetries are then given by a generalised Lie derivative and its associated algebra. This paper constructs an analogous structure for M-theory. A crucial by-product of this is the derivation of the physical section condition for M-theory formulated in an extended space.

Boundary Terms in Generalized Geometry and doubled field theory

We propose a boundary action to complement the recently developed duality manifest actions in string and M-theory using generalized geometry. This boundary action combines the Gibbons-Hawking term with boundary pieces that were previously neglected in the construction of these actions. The combination may be written in terms of the metric of generalized geometry. The result is to produce an action that is duality invariant including boundary terms.

Generalized Geometry and M theory

We reformulate the Hamiltonian form of bosonic eleven dimensional supergravity in terms of an object that unifies the three-form and the metric. For the case of four spatial dimensions, the duality group is manifest and the metric and C-field are on an equal footing even though no dimensional reduction is required for our results to hold. One may also describe our results using the generalized geometry that emerges from membrane duality. The relationship between the twisted Courant algebra and the gauge symmetries of eleven dimensional supergravity are described in detail.

SO(5,5) duality in M-theory and generalized geometry

We attempt to reformulate eleven dimensional supergravity in terms of an object that unifies the three-form and the metric and makes the M-theory duality group manifest. This short note deals with the case of where the U-duality group SO(5,5) acts in five spatial dimensions.

Real fermionic symmetry in type II supergravity

It is known that the transformations of fermionic T-duality, derived from the worldsheet theory, generically transform real supergravity backgrounds to complex supergravity backgrounds. We consider the low-energy target space theory and show that the type II supergravity equations admit a symmetry that transforms the Ramond-Ramond fields and the dilaton. The transformations given by this symmetry involve Killing spinors and include the transformations of Berkovits and Maldacena. However, we show that they also allow real transformations.

Boundary Conditions for Interacting Membranes

We investigate supersymmetric boundary conditions in both the Bagger-Lambert and the ABJM theories of interacting membranes. We find boundary conditions associated to the fivebrane, the ninebrane and the M-theory wave. For the ABJM theory we are able to understand the enhancement of supersymmetry to produce the (4,4) supersymmetry of the self-dual string. We also include supersymmetric boundary conditions on the gauge fields that cancel the classical gauge anomaly of the Chern-Simons terms.

Semiclassical instabilities of Kerr-AdS black holes

We study the thermodynamic stability of the Kerr-AdS black hole from the perturbative corrections to the gravitational partition function. The line of critical stability is identified by the appearance of a negative mode of the Euclidean action that renders the partition function ill-defined. The eigenvalue problem, consisting of a system of three coupled partial differential equations for the metric perturbations, is solved numerically. The agreement with the standard condition of thermodynamic stability in the grand canonical ensemble is remarkable. The results illustrate the physical significance of gravitational partition functions for rotating spacetimes beyond the instanton approximation.

Thermodynamic instability of rotating black holes

We show that the quasi-Euclidean sections of various rotating black holes in different dimensions possess at least one non-conformal negative mode when thermodynamic instabilities are expected. The boundary conditions of fixed induced metric correspond to the partition function of the grand-canonical ensemble. Indeed, in the asymptotically flat cases, we find that a negative mode persists even if the specific heat at constant angular momenta is positive, since the stability in this ensemble also requires the positivity of the isothermal momentum of inertia. We focus in particular on Kerr black holes, on Myers-Perry black holes in five and six dimensions, and on the Emparan-Reall black ring solution. We go on further to consider the richer case of the asymptotically AdS Kerr black hole in four dimensions, where thermodynamic stability is expected for a large enough cosmological constant. The results are consistent with previous findings in the non-rotation limit and support the use of quasi-Euclidean instantons to construct gravitational partition functions.

Inflation without Inflaton(s)

We propose a model for early universe cosmology without the need for fundamental scalar fields. Cosmic acceleration and phenomenologically viable reheating of the universe results from a series of energy transitions, where during each transition vacuum energy is converted to thermal radiation. We show that this `cascading universe' can lead to successful generation of adiabatic density fluctuations and an observable gravity wave spectrum in some cases, where in the simplest case it reproduces a spectrum similar to slow-roll models of inflation. We also find the model provides a reasonable reheating temperature after inflation ends. This type of model may also be relevant for addressing the smallness of the vacuum energy today.

M-theory and the string genus expansion

The partition function of the membrane is investigated. In particular, the case relevant to perturbative string theory of a membrane with topology $S^1 \times Σ$ is examined. The coupling between the string world sheet Euler character and the dilaton is shown to arise from a careful treatment of the membrane partition function measure. This demonstrates that the M-theory origin of the dilaton coupling to the string world sheet is quantum in nature.

Spontaeneous Symmetry Breaking and Tunneling in de Sitter Space

Motivated by our earlier argument that the apparent large cosmological constant from quantum fluctuations is actually an artifact of not using a full quantum mechanical superposition to determine the ground state in which the universe lives in the de Sitter space at the beginning of inflation, we calculate the tunneling probability for the two-well potential for a scalar field in de Sitter space. We include ocupling of the potential to gravity, and the effective potential from quantum corrections. The results show the eigenstates are the sum and differences of the wavefunctions for the seperate wells, i.e. a full superposition, and the energy levels are split, with tunneling between them determined by the Hawking-Moss instanton and not supressed.

Proton Decay, Black Holes, and Large Extra Dimensions

We consider proton decay in theories that contain large extra dimensions. If virtual black hole states are allowed by the theory, as is generally the case, then proton decay can proceed via virtual black holes. The experimental limits on the proton lifetime place strong constraints on the quantum gravity scale $\mnew$ (the effective Planck mass). For most theories, our constraint implies a lower bound of $\mnew > 10^{16}$ GeV. The corresponding bound on the size of large extra dimensions is $\ell < 10^{6/n} \times 10^{-30}$ cm, where $n$ is the number of such dimensions. Regrettably, for most theories this limit rules out the possibility of observing large extra dimensions at accelerators or in millimeter scale gravity experiments. Conversely, proton decay could be dominated by virtual black holes, providing an experimental probe to study stringy quantum gravity physics.

Interacting Black Holes

We revisit the geometry representing l collinear Schwarzschild black holes. It is seen that the black holes' horizons are deformed by their mutual gravitational attraction. The geometry has a string like conical singularity that connects the holes but has nevertheless a well defined action. Using standard gravitational thermodynamics techniques we determine the Free energy for two black holes at fixed temperature and distance, their entropy and mutual force. When the black holes are far apart the results agree with Newtonian gravity expectations. This analyses is generalized to the case of charged black holes. Then we consider black holes embedded in String/M-theory as bound states of branes. Using the effective string description of these bound states and for large separation we reproduce exactly the semi-classical result for the entropy, including the correction associated with the interaction between the holes.
