Report of the Snowmass'21 Workshop on High-Power Cyclotrons and FFAs

This whitepaper summarizes and the state of the field of high-power cyclotrons and FFAs as discussed by international experts during a three-day workshop of the same name. The workshop was held online from Sep 7 to Sep 9, 2021 as part of the US Snowmass'21 Community Exercise, specifically the Accelerator Frontier (AF) and the subpanel Accelerators for Neutrinos (AF02). Thus, we put emphasis on the application of high-power cyclotrons in particle physics, specifically neutrino physics, and as drivers for muon production. In the introduction, we discuss the role of cyclotrons for particle physics, and later we highlight existing and planned experiments in the corresponding sections. However, as these same accelerators have important applications in the fields of isotope production - both for research and medicine - and possibly even in energy research, by providing beam to demonstrator experiments in the areas of Accelerator Driven Systems (ADS), we include these far-reaching topics to provide a full picture of the status and applications of high-power cyclotrons. Furthermore, Fixed Field Alternating Gradient accelerators (FFAs) have recently seen renewed interest. They are in many respects (basic operating principles) similar to cyclotrons and have thus been included in this workshop and whitepaper as well. We are discussing current projects and whether FFAs have the prospect of becoming high-intensity machines.

Tune compensation in nearly scaling Fixed Field alternating gradient Accelerators

In this paper, we investigate the stability of the particle trajectories in Fixed Field alternating gradient Accelerators (FFA) in the presence of field errors: The emphasis is on the scaling radial sector FFA type: a collaboration work is on-going in view of better understanding the properties of the 150 MeV scaling FFA at KURRI in Japan, and progress towards high intensity operation. Analysis of certain types of field imperfections revealed some interesting features about this machine that explain some of the experimental results and generalize the concept of a scaling FFA to a non-scaling one for which the tune variations obey a well defined law. A compensation scheme of tune variations in imperfect scaling FFAs is presented. This is the cornerstone of a novel concept of a non-linear non-scaling radial sector fixed tune FFA that we present and discuss in details in the last part of this paper.

On solving the Thomas Bargman-Michel-Telegdi equation using the Bogoliubov Krylov method of averages and the calculation of the Berry phases

Several proposals aimed at measuring the Electric Dipole Moment (EDM) for charged particles require very precise simulations and understanding of the systematic errors that can contribute to a spin buildup mimicking the EDM signal to be detected. In what follows, one used the Bogoliubov-Krylov-Mitropolski method of averages to solve the T-BMT equation and calculate the Berry phases arising for a proton EDM storage ring. The formalism employed proved to be particularly useful to determine the evolution of the spin at the observation point, i.e. at the location of the polarimeter. Several selected cases of lattice imperfections were simulated and benchmarked with the analytical estimates. This allowed the proof of the convergence of the numerical simulations and helped gain better understanding of the systematic errors.

Racetrack Fixed Field Accelerator with pulsed quadrupoles for variable energy extraction

In this paper, a novel concept combining a fixed field alternating gradient accelerator with time-varying quadrupoles is presented which solves some of the major problems of conventional fixed field accelerators. This concept combines a stable racetrack fixed field configuration with dispersion free straight sections to enable continuous variable energy extraction. In the long straight sections, a time-varying synchrotron-like alternating gradient focusing structure makes it possible for the first time to correct the beam optics of an FFA accelerator in order to heuristically maximize the beam transmission by minimizing the tune excursion and avoiding the crossing of harmful betatron resonances. This accelerator makes it possible to design a compact variable energy extraction machine which is particularly useful for research and medical applications such as heavy ion therapy.
