Generalized virial theorem in warped DGP brane-world

We generalize the virial theorem to the warped DGP brane world scenario and consider its implications on the virail mass. In this theory the four dimensional scalar curvature term is included in the bulk action and the resulting four dimensional effective Einstein equation is augmented with extra terms which can be interpreted as geometrical mass, contributing to the gravitational energy. Estimating the geometrical mass using the observational data, we show that these geometric terms may account for the virial mass discrepancy in clusters of galaxies. Finally, we obtain the radial velocity dispersion of galaxy clusters and show that it is compatible with the radial velocity dispersion profle of such clusters.

Effect of extrinsic curvature on quark--hadron phase transition

The last phase transition predicted by the standard model of particle physics took place at the QCD scale $T\sim200$ MeV when the universe was about $t\sim10^{-5}$ seconds old and the Hubble radius was around 10 Km. In this paper, we consider the quark--hadron phase transition in the context of brane-world cosmology where our universe is a 3-brane embedded in a $m$-dimensional bulk and localization of matter on the brane is achieved by means of a confining potential. We study the behavior of the physical quantities relevant to the description of the early universe like the energy density, temperature and scale factor, before, during, and after the phase transition and investigate the effects of extrinsic curvature on the cosmological phase transition. We show that the brane-world effects reduce the effective temperature of the quark--gluon plasma and of the hadronic fluid. Finally, we discuss the case where the universe evolved through a mixed phase with a small initial supercooling and monotonically growing hadronic bubbles.

Spherically symmetric solutions and gravitational collapse in brane-worlds

We consider spherically symmetric solutions within the context of brane-world theory without mirror symmetry or any form of junction conditions. For a constant curvature bulk, we obtain the modified Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) interior solutions in two cases where one is matched to a schwarzschild-de Sitter exterior while the other is consistent with an exterior solution whose structure can be used to explain the galaxy rotation curves without postulating dark matter. We also find the upper bound to the mass of a static brane-world star and show that the influence of the bulk effects on the interior solutions is small. Finally, we investigate the gravitational collapse on the brane and show that the exterior of a collapsing star can be static in this scenario.

Bulk scalar field in brane-worlds with induced gravity inspired by the ${\cal L}(R)$ term

We obtain the effective field equations in a brane-world scenario within the framework of a DGP model where the action on the brane is an arbitrary function of the Ricci scalar, ${\cal L}(R)$, and the bulk action includes a scalar field in the matter Lagrangian. We obtain the Friedmann equations and acceleration conditions in the presence of the bulk scalar field for the $R^n$ term in four-dimensional gravity.

Role of Chaplygin gas as geometrical dark energy in anisotropic brane gravity

We consider an anisotropic brane-world model with Bianchi type I and V geometry, without mirror symmetry or any form of junction conditions. The generalized Chaplygin gas, which interpolates between a high density relativistic era and a non-relativistic matter phase, is a popular candidate for the present accelerated expansion of the universe. Considering the generalized Chaplygin gas as a geometrical dark energy, we obtain the general solutions in an exact parametric form for both Bianchi type I and V space-times. Finally, we study the behavior of the observationally important parameters such as the shear, anisotropic and deceleration parameter in this model.

Can local bulk effects explain the galactic dark matter?

We obtain the virial theorem within the context of a brane-world model without mirror symmetry or any form of junction condition. Taking a constant curvature bulk (neglecting non-local bulk effects), the local bulk effects generate a geometrical mass, contributing to the gravitational energy which may be used to explain the virial mass discrepancy in clusters of galaxies. We fix the parameter of this model in agreement with observational data.
