ColorFull -- a C++ library for calculations in SU(Nc) color space

ColorFull, a C++ package for treating QCD color structure, is presented. ColorFull, which utilizes the trace basis approach, is intended for interfacing with event generators, but can also be used as a stand-alone package for squaring QCD amplitudes, calculating interferences, and describing the effect of gluon emission and gluon exchange.

Hermitian Young Operators

Starting from conventional Young operators we construct Hermitian operators which project orthogonally onto irreducible representations of the (special) unitary group.

Tools for calculations in color space

Both the higher energy and the initial state colored partons contribute to making exact calculations in QCD color space more important at the LHC than at its predecessors. This is applicable whether the method of assessing QCD is fixed order calculation, resummation, or parton showers. In this talk we discuss tools for tackling the problem of performing exact color summed calculations. We start with theoretical tools in the form of the (standard) trace bases and the orthogonal multiplet bases (for which a general method of construction was recently presented). Following this, we focus on two new packages for performing color structure calculations: one easy to use Mathematica package, ColorMath, and one C++ package, ColorFull, which is suitable for more demanding calculations, and for interfacing with event generators.

Orthogonal multiplet bases in SU(Nc) color space

We develop a general recipe for constructing orthogonal bases for the calculation of color structures appearing in QCD for any number of partons and arbitrary Nc. The bases are constructed using hermitian gluon projectors onto irreducible subspaces invariant under SU(Nc). Thus, each basis vector is associated with an irreducible representation of SU(Nc). The resulting multiplet bases are not only orthogonal, but also minimal for finite Nc. As a consequence, for calculations involving many colored particles, the number of basis vectors is reduced significantly compared to standard approaches employing overcomplete bases. We exemplify the method by constructing multiplet bases for all processes involving a total of 6 external colored partons.

The Sudakov Veto Algorithm Reloaded

We perform a careful analysis of the main Monte Carlo algorithm used in parton shower simulations, the Sudakov veto algorithm. We prove a general version of the algorithm, directly including the dependence on the infrared cutoff. Taking this as a starting point, we then consider non-positive definite splitting kernels, as encountered when dealing with sub-leading colour correlations or splitting kernels beyond leading order. New algorithms suited for these situations are developed.

Subleading Nc improved Parton Showers

We describe an algorithm for improving subsequent parton shower emissions by full SU(3) color correlations in the framework of a dipole-type shower. As a proof of concept, we present results from the first implementation of such an algorithm for a final state shower. The corrections are found to be small for event shapes and jet rates but can be more significant for tailored observables.

Color structure for soft gluon resummation - a general recipe

A strategy for calculating the color structure needed for soft gluon resummation for processes with any number of colored partons is introduced using a N_c --> infinity inspired basis. In this basis a general formalism can be found at the same time as the calculations are simplified. The advantages are illustrated by recalculating the soft anomalous dimension matrix for the processes gg --> gg, q\qbar --> q \qbar g and q\qbar --> ggg.

Color evolution of 2 -> 3 processes

The color structure needed for resummation of all colored 2 -> 3 processes is calculated using multiplet inspired s-channel bases. In this way the resulting matrices, describing the color structure, are guaranteed to obey simplifying symmetries.

Symmetry of anomalous dimension matrices explained

In a previous paper, one of us pointed out that the anomalous dimension matrices for all physical processes that have been calculated to date are complex symmetric, if stated in an orthonormal basis. In this paper we prove this fact and show that it is only true in a subset of all possible orthonormal bases, but that this subset is the natural one to use for physical calculations.

Soft gluons in Higgs plus two jet production

We investigate the effects of an all order QCD resummation of soft gluon emissions for Higgs boson production in association with two hard jets. We consider both the gluon-gluon fusion and weak boson fusion processes and show how to resum a large part of the leading logarithms in the jet veto scale. Our resummation improves on previous analyses which also aim to include the effects of multiple soft gluon radiation. In addition we calculate the interference between weak boson fusion and gluon-gluon fusion and find that it is small.

Classical and Non-Classical ADD-phenomenology with high-ET jet observables at collider experiments

We use the results from a recent investigation of hard parton-parton gravitational scattering in the ADD scenario to make semi-quantitative predictions for a few standard high-ET jet observables at the LHC. By implementing these gravitational scattering results in the Pythia event generator and combining it with the Charybdis generator for black holes, we investigate the effects of large extra dimensions and find that, depending on the width of the brane, the relative importance of gravitational scattering and black hole production may change significantly. For the cases where gravitational scatterings are important we discuss how to distinguish gravitational scattering from standard QCD partonic scatterings. In particular we point out that the universal colorlessness of elastic gravitational scattering implies fewer particles between the hard jets, and that this can be used in order to distinguish an increased jet activity induced by gravitational scattering from an increased jet activity induced by eg. super-symmetric extensions where the interaction is colorful.

Gravitational Scattering in the ADD-model at High and Low Energies

Gravitational scattering in the ADD-model is considered at both sub- and transplanckian energies using a common formalism. By keeping a physical cut-off in the KK tower associated with virtual KK exchange, such as the cut-off implied from a finite brane width, troublesome divergences are removed from the calculations in both energy ranges. The scattering behavior depends on three different energy scales: the fundamental Planck mass, the collision energy and the inverse brane width. The result for energies low compared to the effective cut-off (inverse brane width) is a contact-like interaction. At high energies the gravitational scattering associated with the extra dimensional version of Newton's law is recovered.

Gravitational Scattering in the ADD-model Revisited

Gravitational scattering in the ADD-model is studied and it is argued that no cut-off is needed for the exchange of virtual Kaluza--Klein modes. By introduction of a small coordinate in the extra dimensions a unique form of the Kaluza--Klein-summed propagator is found for an odd number of extra dimensions. The matrix element corresponding to this propagator can also (as opposed to the cut-offed version) be Fourier transformed to position space, giving back the extra-dimensional version of Newton's law. For an even number of extra dimensions the propagator is found by requiring that Newton's law should be recovered.

QCD-supression by Black Hole Production at the LHC

Possible consequences of the production of small black holes at the LHC for different scenarios with large extra dimensions are investigated. The effects from black hole production on some standard jet observables are examined, concentrating on the reduction of the QCD cross section. It is found that black hole production of partons interacting on a short enough distance indeed seem to generate a drastic drop in the QCD cross section. However from an experimental point of view this will in most cases be camouflaged by energetic radiation from the black holes.

Uncertainties on Central Exclusive Scalar Luminosities from the unintegrated gluon distributions

In a previous report we used the Linked Dipole Chain model unintegrated gluon densities to investigate the uncertainties in the predictions for central exclusive production of scalars at hadron colliders. Here we expand this investigation by also looking at other parameterizations of the unintegrated gluon density, and look in more detail on the behavior of these at small k_T. We confirm our conclusions that the luminosity function for central exclusive production is very sensitive to this behavior. However, we also conclude that the available densities based on the CCFM and LDC evolutions are not constrained enough to give reliable predictions even for inclusive Higgs production at the LHC.

Central Exclusive Scalar Luminosities from the Linked Dipole Chain Model gluon densities

We investigate the implication of uncertainties in the unintegrated gluon distribution for the predictions for central exclusive production of scalars at hadron colliders. We use parameterizations of the kT-unintegrated gluon density obtained from the Linked Dipole Chain model, applying different options for the treatment of non-leading terms. We find that the luminosity function for central exclusive production is very sensitive to details of the transverse momentum distribution of the gluon which, contrary to the kT-integrated distribution, is not very well constrained experimentally.
