Zeta functions and the Fried conjecture for smooth pseudo-Anosov flows

To a transitive pseudo-Anosov flow $φ$ on a $3$-manifold $M$ and a representation $ρ$ of $π_1(M)$, we associate a zeta function $ζ_{φ,ρ}(s)$ defined for $\Re s \gg 1$, generalizing the Anosov case. For a class of ``smooth pseudo-Anosov flows'', we prove that $ζ_{φ,ρ}(s)$ has a meromorphic continuation to $\mathbb{C}$. We also prove a version of the Fried conjecture for smooth pseudo-Anosov flows which, under some conditions on $ρ$, relates $ζ_{φ,ρ}(0)$ to the Reidemeister torsion of $M$. Finally we prove a topological analogue of the Dirichlet class number formula. In order to deal with singularities, we use $C^\infty$ versions of the approaches of Rugh and Sanchez--Morgado, based on Markov partitions.

Properties of resonant states for generic smooth expanding maps

We prove that the resonances for a generic smooth expanding map are simple and that zero is a regular value for the associated resonant states. Moreover, the real-valued resonant states are Morse functions. Using Nash-Moser theory, we also prove that the resonant states for a generic smooth expanding map of large enough degree (depending on the dimension of the manifold the map is acting on) have the same properties as generic smooth functions.

Bound on the number of Ruelle resonances for Gevrey hyperbolic flows

We improve the best known upper bounds on the number of Ruelle resonances in disks of large radius for Gevrey uniformly hyperbolic flows. The proof is based on Rugh's approach of dynamical determinants that replaces the study of the flow itself by the analysis of a system of open hyperbolic maps.

Stationary internal waves in a two-dimensional aquarium at low viscosity

We prove the uniform solvability of a stationary problem associated to internal waves equation with small viscosity in a two dimensional aquarium with real-analytic boundary, under a Morse--Smale dynamical assumption. This is achieved by using complex deformations of the aquarium, on which the inviscid stationary internal wave operator is invertible.

Orr-Sommerfeld equation and complex deformation

For shear flows in a 2D channel, we define resonances near regular values of the shear profile for the Rayleigh equation under an analyticity assumption. This is done via complex deformation of the interval on which Rayleigh equation is considered. We show such resonances are inviscid limits of the eigenvalues of the corresponding Orr--Sommerfeld equation.

FBI Transform in Gevrey Classes and Anosov Flows

An analytic FBI transform is built on compact manifolds without boundary, that satisfies all the expected properties. It enables the study of microlocal analytic and Gevrey regularity on such manifolds. This tool is then used to study the Ruelle spectrum of Anosov flows with Gevrey coefficients. In particular, finite order for the associated dynamical determinant is proved.

Distribution of Ruelle resonances for real-analytic Anosov diffeomorphisms

We prove an upper bound for the number of Ruelle resonances for Koopman operators associated to real-analytic Anosov diffeomorphisms: in dimension $d$, the number of resonances larger than $r$ is a $\mathcal{O}(|\log r|^d)$ when $r$ goes to $0$. For each connected component of the space of real-analytic Anosov diffeomorphisms on a real-analytic manifold, we prove a dichotomy: either the exponent $d$ in our bound is never optimal, or it is optimal on a dense subset. Using examples constructed by Bandtlow, Just and Slipantschuk, we see that we are always in the latter situation for connected components of the space of real-analytic Anosov diffeomorphisms on the $2$-dimensional torus.

Scattering rigidity for analytic metrics

For analytic negatively curved Riemannian manifold with analytic strictly convex boundary, we show that the scattering map for the geodesic flow determines the manifold up to isometry. In particular one recovers both the topology and the metric. More generally, our result holds in the analytic category under the no conjugate point and hyperbolic trapped sets assumptions.

Rigorous justification for the space-split sensitivity algorithm to compute linear response in Anosov systems

Ruelle gave a formula for linear response of transitive Anosov diffeomorphisms. Recently, practically computable realizations of Ruelle's formula have emerged that potentially enable sensitivity analysis of certain high-dimensional chaotic numerical simulations encountered in the applied sciences. In this paper, we provide full mathematical justification for the convergence of one such efficient computation, the space-split sensitivity, or S3, algorithm. In S3, Ruelle's formula is computed as a sum of two terms obtained by decomposing the perturbation vector field into a coboundary and a remainder that is parallel to the unstable direction. Such a decomposition results in a splitting of Ruelle's formula that is amenable to efficient computation. We prove the existence of the S3 decomposition and the convergence of the computations of both resulting components of Ruelle's formula.

Semiclassical measures for higher dimensional quantum cat maps

Consider a quantum cat map $M$ associated to a matrix $A\in\mathop{\mathrm{Sp}}(2n,\mathbb Z)$, which is a common toy model in quantum chaos. We show that the mass of eigenfunctions of $M$ on any nonempty open set in the position-frequency space satisfies a lower bound which is uniform in the semiclassical limit, under two assumptions: (1) there is a unique simple eigenvalue of $A$ of largest absolute value and (2) the characteristic polynomial of $A$ is irreducible over the rationals. This is similar to previous work [arXiv:1705.05019], [arXiv:1906.08923] on negatively curved surfaces and [arXiv:2103.06633] on quantum cat maps with $n=1$, but this paper gives the first results of this type which apply in any dimension. When condition (2) fails we provide a weaker version of the result and discuss relations to existing counterexamples. We also obtain corresponding statements regarding semiclassical measures and damped quantum cat maps.

Global trace formula for ultra-differentiable Anosov flows

Adapting tools that we introduced in [19] to study Anosov flows, we prove that the trace formula conjectured by Dyatlov and Zworski in [12] holds for Anosov flows in a certain class of regularity (smaller than $\mathcal{C}^\infty$ but larger than the class of Gevrey functions). The main ingredient of the proof is the construction of a family of anisotropic Hilbert spaces of generalized distributions on which the generator of the flow has discrete spectrum.

Transfer operator for ultradifferentiable expanding maps of the circle

Given a $\mathcal{C}^\infty$ expanding map $T$ of the circle, we construct a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ of smooth functions on which the transfer operator $\mathcal{L}$ associated to $T$ acts as a compact operator. This result is made quantitative (in terms of singular values of the operator $\mathcal{L}$ acting on $\mathcal{H}$) using the language of Denjoy-Carleman classes. Moreover, the nuclear power decomposition of Baladi and Tsujii can be performed on the space $\mathcal{H}$, providing a bound on the growth of the dynamical determinant associated to $\mathcal{L}$.

Local and global trace formulae for smooth hyperbolic diffeomorphisms

We define and study local and global trace formulae for discrete-time uniformly hyperbolic weighted dynamics. We explain first why dynamical determinants are particularly convenient tools to tackle this question. Then we construct counter-examples that highlight that the situation is much less well-behaved for smooth dynamics than for real-analytic ones. This suggests to study this question for Gevrey dynamics. We do so by constructing an anisotropic space of ultradistributions on which a transfer operator acts as a trace class operator. From this construction, we deduce trace formulae for Gevrey dynamics, as well as bounds on the growth of their dynamical determinants and the asymptotics of their Ruelle resonances.

Réponse linéaire et points périodiques : cas analytique

We explain some points of the demonstration by Pollicott and Vytnova of a formula for linear response in terms of periodic points in the case of analytic expanding maps of the circle or Anosov diffeomorphisms of the torus. The main tool is the dynamical determinant which may be written as the Fredholm determinant of a transfer operator (or a quotient of Fredholm determinants of transfer operators).
