Reaction-Diffusion Processes from Equivalent Integrable Quantum Chains

One-dimensional reaction-diffusion systems are mapped through a similarity transformation onto integrable (and a priori non-stochastic) quantum chains. Time-dependent properties of these chemical models can then be found exactly. The reaction-diffusion processes related to free fermion systems with site-independent interactions are classified. The time-dependence of the mean particle density is calculated. Furthermore new integrable stochastic processes related to the Heisenberg XXZ chain are identified and the relaxation times for the particle density and density correlation for these systems are found.

Local scale invariance and strongly anisotropic equilibrium critical systems

A new set of infinitesimal transformations generalizing scale invariance for strongly anisotropic critical systems is considered. It is shown that such a generalization is possible if the anisotropy exponent θ=2/N, with N=1,2,3 ... Differential equations for the two-point function are derived and explicitly solved for all values of N. Known special cases are conformal invariance (N=2) and Schrödinger invariance (N=1). For N=4 and N=6, the results contain as special cases the exactly known scaling forms obtained for the spin-spin correlation function in the axial next nearest neighbor spherical (ANNNS) model at its Lifshitz points of first and second order.

Finite-size effects in layered magnetic systems

Thermal and magnetic effects in a system consisting of thin layers of coupled Ising spins with $S=1/2$ and $S=1$ are considered. The specific heat and the correlation length display maxima at two different temperatures. It is discussed in what sense these maxima can be interpreted as a finite-size rounding of a thermodynamic singularity associated with a phase transition. The connection with ordinary, extraordinary and special surface phase transitions is made. In $2D$, the surface critical exponents are calculated from conformal invariance. The bulk and surface finite-size scaling of the order parameter profiles at the transition points is discussed. In $2D$, an exact scaling function for the profiles is suggested through conformal invariance arguments for the (extra)ordinary transition.

On the phase diagram of branched polymer collapse

The phase diagram of the collapse of a two-dimensional infinite branched polymer interacting with the solvent and with itself through contact interactions is studied from the $q\to 1$ limit of an extension of the $q-$ states Potts model. Exact solution on the Bethe lattice and Migdal-Kadanoff renormalization group calculations show that there is a line of $θ$ transitions from the extended to a single compact phase. The $θ$ line, governed by three different fixed points, consists of two lines of extended--compact transitions which are in different universality classes and meet in a multicritical point. On the other hand, directed branched polymers are shown to be completely determined by the strongly embedded case and there is a single $θ$ transition which is in the directed percolation universality class.

Finite-Size Scaling and Universality in the Spin 1 Quantum XY Chain

The spin-1 XY chain in a transverse field is studied using finite-size scaling. The ground state phase diagram displays a paramagnetic, an ordered ferromagnetic and an ordered oscillatory phase. The paramagnetic-ferromagnetic transition line belongs to the universality class of the 2D Ising model. Along this line, universality is confirmed for the finite-size scaling functions of several correlation lengths and for the conformal operator content.

Domain Wall in the Spin-S Quantum Ising Chain

Domain walls in the spin S quantum Ising chain at zero temperature are considered. Quantum effects prevent the walls from being sharp and delocalize the exact eigenstates. The absence of a characteristic length of the domain walls is reflected in the finite-size scaling of the spectrum of the Hamiltonian.

On the Phase Diagram of the q->1 Extended Potts Model and Lattice Animal Collapse

The phase diagram of the two-dimensional extended q-states Potts model is investigated in the q->1 limit. This is equivalent to studying the phase diagram of a two-dimensional infinite interacting lattice animal. An exact solution on the Bethe lattice and a Migdal-Kadanoff renormalization group calculation predict a line of theta transitions from an extended to a compact phase in the lattice animal. We compare this with the phase diagram predicted from previous numerical studies.

EQUIVALENCES BETWEEN STOCHASTIC SYSTEMS

Time-dependent correlation functions of (unstable) particles undergoing biased or unbiased diffusion, coagulation and annihilation are calculated. This is achieved by similarity transformations between different stochastic models and between stochastic and soluble {\em non-stochastic} models. The results agree with experiments on one-dimensional annihilation-coagulation processes.

DOMAIN WALLS IN THE QUANTUM TRANSVERSE ISING MODEL

We discuss several problems concerning domain walls in the spin $S$ Ising model at zero temperature in a magnetic field, $H/(2S)$, applied in the $x$ direction. Some results are also given for the planar ($y$-$z$) model in a transverse field. We treat the quantum problem in one dimension by perturbation theory at small $H$ and numerically over a large range of $H$. We obtain the spin density profile by fixing the spins at opposite ends of the chain to have opposite signs of $S_z$. One dimension is special in that there the quantum width of the wall is proportional to the size $L$ of the system. We also study the quantitative features of the `particle' band which extends up to energies of order $H$ above the ground state. Except for the planar limit, this particle band is well separated from excitations having energy $J/S$ involving creation of more walls. At large $S$ this particle band develops energy gaps and the lowest sub-band has tunnel splittings of order $H2^{1-2S}$. This scale of energy gives rise to anomalous scaling with respect to a) finite size, b) temperature, or c) random potentials. The intrinsic width of the domain wall and the pinning energy are also defined and calculated in certain limiting cases. The general conclusion is that quantum effects prevent the wall from being sharp and in higher dimension would prevent sudden excursions in the configuration of the wall.

SCHRÖDINGER INVARIANCE IN DISCRETE STOCHASTIC SYSTEMS

Local scale invariance for lattice models is studied using new realizations of the Schrödinger algebra. The two-point function is calculated and it turns out that the result can be reproduced from exact two-point correlation functions evaluated in the stationary state of several simple stochastic models.

Generalized Scaling for Models with Multiple Absorbing States

At a continuous transition into a nonunique absorbing state, particle systems may exhibit nonuniversal critical behavior, in apparent violation of hyperscaling. We propose a generalized scaling theory for dynamic critical behavior at a transition into an absorbing state, which is capable of describing exponents which vary according to the initial configuration. The resulting hyperscaling relation is supported by simulations of two lattice models.

SCHRÖdinger Invariance and Strongly Anisotropic Critical Systems

The extension of strongly anisotropic or dynamical scaling to local scale invariance is investigated. For the special case of an anisotropy or dynamical exponent $θ=z=2$, the group of local scale transformation considered is the Schrödinger group, which can be obtained as the non-relativistic limit of the conformal group. The requirement of Schrödinger invariance determines the two-point function in the bulk and reduces the three-point function to a scaling form of a single variable. Scaling forms are also derived for the two-point function close to a free surface which can be either space-like or time-like. These results are reproduced in several exactly solvable statistical systems, namely the kinetic Ising model with Glauber dynamics, lattice diffusion, Lifshitz points in the spherical model and critical dynamics of the spherical model with a non-conserved order parameter. For generic values of $θ$, evidence from higher order Lifshitz points in the spherical model and from directed percolation suggests a simple scaling form of the two-point function.

Boundary-Induced Phase Transitions in Equilibrium and Non-Equilibrium Systems

Boundary conditions may change the phase diagram of non-equilibrium statistical systems like the one-dimensional asymmetric simple exclusion process with and without particle number conservation. Using the quantum Hamiltonian approach, the model is mapped onto an XXZ quantum chain and solved using the Bethe ansatz. This system is related to a two-dimensional vertex model in thermal equilibrium. The phase transition caused by a point-like boundary defect in the dynamics of the one-dimensional exclusion model is in the same universality class as a continous (bulk) phase transition of the two-dimensional vertex model caused by a line defect at its boundary. Introduction to Conformal Invariance and its Applications to Critical Phenomena

This is an introduction to conformal invariance and two-dimensional critical phenomena for graduate students and condensed-matter physicists. After explaining the algebraic foundations of conformal invariance, numerical methods and their application to the Ising, Potts, Ashkin-Teller and XY models, tricritical behaviour, the Yang-Lee singularity and the XXZ chain are presented. Finite-size scaling techniques and their conformal extensions are treated in detail. The vicinity of the critical point is studied using the exact $S$-matrix approach, the truncation method, the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz and asymptotic finite-size scaling functions. The integrability of the two-dimensional Ising model in a magnetic field is also dealt with. Finally, the extension of conformal invariance to surface critical phenomena is described and an outlook towards possible applications in critical dynamics is given.

Reaction-Diffusion Processes, Critical Dynamics and Quantum Chains

The master equation describing non-equilibrium one-dimensional problems like diffusion limited reactions or critical dynamics of classical spin systems can be written as a Schrödinger equation in which the wave function is the probability distribution and the Hamiltonian is that of a quantum chain with nearest neighbor interactions. Since many one-dimensional quantum chains are integrable, this opens a new field of applications. At the same time physical intuition and probabilistic methods bring new insight into the understanding of the properties of quantum chains. A simple example is the asymmetric diffusion of several species of particles which leads naturally to Hecke algebras and $q$-deformed quantum groups. Many other examples are given. Several relevant technical aspects like critical exponents, correlation functions and finite-size scaling are also discussed in detail.

On the Two-Point Correlation Function in Dynamical Scaling and SCHRÖdinger Invariance

The extension of dynamical scaling to local, space-time dependent rescaling factors is investigated. For a dynamical exponent $z=2$, the corresponding invariance group is the Schrödinger group. Schrödinger invariance is shown to determine completely the two-point correlation function. The result is checked in two exactly solvable models.

Intermittency Studies in Directed Bond Percolation

The self-similar cluster fluctuations of directed bond percolation at the percolation threshold are studied using techniques borrowed from inter\-mit\-ten\-cy-related analysis in multi-particle production. Numerical simulations based on the factorial moments for large $1+1$-dimensional lattices allow to handle statistical and boundary effects and show the existence of weak but definite intermittency patterns. The extracted fractal dimensions are in agreement with scaling arguments leading to a new relation linking the intermittency indices to the critical exponents and the fractal dimension of directed percolation clusters.
