Casimir energy between two parallel plates and projective representation of Poincaré group

The Casimir effect is a physical manifestation of zero point energy of quantum vacuum. In a relativistic quantum field theory, Poincaré symmetry of the theory seems, at first sight, to imply that non-zero vacuum energy is inconsistent with translational invariance of the vacuum. In the setting of two uniform boundary plates at rest, quantum fields outside the plates have (1+2)-dimensional Poincaré symmtry. Taking a massless scalar field as an example, we have examined the consistency between the Poincaré symmetry and the existence of the vacuum enegy. We note that, in quantum theory, symmetries are represented projectively in general and show that the Casimir energy is connected to central charges appearing in the algebra of generators in the projective representations.

Quark CP-Phase and Froggatt-Nielsen Mechanism

On the basis of the Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism, we study quark flavor mixings in the $SU(6) \times SU(2)_R$ model. The characteristic structure of the CKM matrix is attributed to the hierarchical effective Yukawa couplings due to the Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism and also to the state-mixings beyond the MSSM. We elucidate the detailed form of the CKM matrix elements and find interesting relations between the \textit{CP} violating phase and three mixing angles. Taking the existing data of three mixing angles, we estimate the quark \textit{CP}-phase at $δ= (75 \pm 3)^{\circ}$. This result is in accord with observations.

Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata matrix and Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism

Flavor mixings together with fermion mass spectra are studied in detail in the $SU(6) \times SU(2)_R$ model, in which state-mixings beyond the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) take place. Characteristic patterns of fermion spectra are attributed to the hierarchical structure of effective Yukawa interactions via the Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism and also to the state-mixings beyond the MSSM. It is shown explicitly that the neutrino mass matrix in the mass diagonal basis for charged leptons has no hierarchical structure. This is due to the cancellation among the hierarchical factors by the seesaw mechanism with the hierarchical Majorana mass matrix of $R$-handed neutrinos. As a consequence, $V_{\rm MNS}$ exhibits large mixing. It is found that observed values of the Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata matrix elements are reproduced successfully.

Quantization of hypercharge in gauge groups locally isomorphic but globally nonisomorphic to SU(3)_c X SU(2)_L X U(1)_Y

In the Standard Model the hypercharges of quarks and leptons are not determined by the gauge group itself. In a recent paper [C. Hattori et al. Phys. Rev. D83, 015009 (2011)] it is shown that, if the direct product gauge group G_SM is slightly modified to the semidirect product group G'_SM, hypercharges are restricted to quantized values as n/6 mod Z (n = 0,1,3,4). In this brief paper, we examine all of the compact Lie groups locally isomorphic to G_SM, and show that G'_SM (or its isomorphisms) is the unique possibility that yields the correct hypercharge quantization.

Semidirect product gauge group $[SU(3)_{\rm c} \times SU(2)_{\rm L}]\rtimes U(1)_{\rm Y}$ and quantization of hypercharge

In the Standard Model the hypercharges of quarks and leptons are not determined by the gauge group $SU(3)_{\rm c} \times SU(2)_{\rm L} \times U(1)_{\rm Y}$ alone. We show that, if we choose the semidirect product group $[SU(3)_{\rm c} \times SU(2)_{\rm L}] \rtimes U(1)_{\rm Y}$ as its gauge group, the hyperchages are settled to be $n/6 \mod {\mathbb{Z}}\;(n = 0,1,3,4) $. In addition, the conditions for gauge-anomaly cancellation give strong constraints. As a result, the ratios of the hypercharges are uniquely determined and the gravitational anomaly is automatically canceled. The standard charge assignment to quarks and leptons can be properly reproduced. For exotic matter fields their hypercharges are also discussed.

$SU(3)_{\rm L} \rtimes (\mathbb{Z}_3 \times \mathbb{Z}_3)$ gauge symmetry and Tri-bimaximal mixing

We study an effective gauge theory whose gauge group is a semidirect product $G = G_c \rtimes \mathitΓ$ with $G_c$ and $\mathitΓ$ being a connected Lie group and a finite group, respectively. The semidirect product is defined through a projective homomorphism $γ$ (i.e., homomorphism up to the center of $G_c$) from $\mathitΓ$ into $G_c$. The (linear) representation of $G$ is made from $γ$ and a projective representation of $\mathitΓ$ over $\mathbb{C}$. To be specific, we take $SU(3)_L$ as $G_c$ and $\mathbb{Z}_3 \times \mathbb{Z}_3$ as $\mathitΓ$. It is noticed that the irreducible projective representations of $\mathitΓ$ are three-dimensional in spite of its Abelian nature. We give a toy model on the lepton mixing which illustrates the peculiar feature of such gauge symmetry. It is shown that under a particular vacuum alignment the tri-bimaximal mixing matrix is reproduced.

Flavor Symmetry and Galois Group of Elliptic Curves

A new approach to the generation structure of fermions is proposed. We consider a brane configuration in which the brane intersection yields a two-torus in the extra space. It is assumed that the two-torus is discretized and is given by the torsion points of the elliptic curve over Q . We direct our attention to the arithmetic structure of the elliptic curve with complex multiplication (CM). In our approach the flavor symmetry including the R-parity has its origin in the Galois group of elliptic curves with CM. We study the possible types of the Galois group. The Galois group is shown to be an extension of Z_2 by some abelian group. A phenomenologically viable example of the Galois group is presented, in which the characteristic texture of fermion masses and mixings is reproduced and the mixed-anomaly conditions are satisfied.

Statistical quantum operation

A generic unital positive operator-valued measure (POVM), which transforms a given stationary pure state to an arbitrary statistical state with perfect decoherence, is presented. This allows one to operationally realize thermalization as a special case. The loss of information due to randomness generated by the operation is discussed by evaluating the entropy. Thermalization of the bipartite spin-1/2 system is discussed as an illustrative example.

Galois Group of Elliptic Curves and Flavor Symmetry

Putting emphasis on the relation between rational conformal field theory (RCFT) and algebraic number theory, we consider a brane configuration in which the D-brane intersection is an elliptic curve corresponding to RCFT. A new approach to the generation structure of fermions is proposed in which the flavor symmetry including the R-parity has its origin in the Galois group on elliptic curves with complex multiplication (CM). We study the possible types of the Galois group derived from the torsion points of the elliptic curve with CM. A phenomenologically viable example of the Galois group is presented, in which the characteristic texture of fermion masses and mixings is reproduced and the mixed-anomaly conditions are satisfied.
