Global Lipschitz Stability in Determining Coefficients of the Radiative Transport Equation

In this article, for the radiative transport equation, we study inverse problems of determining a time independent scattering coefficient or total attenuation by boundary data on the complementary sub-boundary after making one time input of a pair of a positive initial value and boundary data on a suitable sub-boundary. The main results are Lipschitz stability estimates. We can also prove the reverse inequality, which means that our estimates for the inverse problems are the best possible. The proof is based on a Carleman estimate with a linear weight function.

Transport of Entanglement

We consider the propagation of two-photon light in a random medium. We show that the Wigner distribution of the two-photon wave function obeys an equation that is analogous to the radiative transport equation for classical light. Using this result, we predict that the entanglement of a photon pair is destroyed with propagation.

Transient Oscillation of Currents in Quantum Hall Effect of Bloch Electrons

We consider the quantum Hall effect of two-dimensional electrons with a periodic potential and study the time dependence of the Hall and longitudinal currents when the electric field is applied abruptly. We find that the currents oscillate in time with very large frequencies because of quantum fluctuation and the oscillations eventually vanish, for their amplitudes decay as 1/t.

Distribution of the spacing between two adjacent avoided crossings

We consider the frequency at which avoided crossings appear in an energy level structure when an external field is applied to a quantum chaotic system. The distribution of the spacing in the parameter between two adjacent avoided crossings is investigated. Using a random matrix model, we find that the distribution of these spacings is well fitted by a power-law distribution for small spacings. The powers are 2 and 3 for the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble and Gaussian unitary ensemble, respectively. We also find that the distributions decay exponentially for large spacings. The distributions in concrete quantum chaotic systems agree with those of the random matrix model.

Temperature dependence of ESR intensity for the nanoscale molecular magnet V15

The electron spin resonance (ESR) of nanoscale molecular magnet ${\rm V}_{15}$ is studied. Since the Hamiltonian of ${\rm V}_{15}$ has a large Hilbert space and numerical calculations of the ESR signal evaluating the Kubo formula with exact diagonalization method is difficult, we implement the formula with the help of the random vector technique and the Chebyshev polynominal expansion, which we name the double Chebyshev expansion method. We calculate the temperature dependence of the ESR intensity of ${\rm V}_{15}$ and compare it with the data obtained in experiment. As another complementary approach, we also implement the Kubo formula with the subspace iteration method taking only important low-lying states into account. We study the ESR absorption curve below $100{\rm K}$ by means of both methods. We find that side peaks appear due to the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction and these peaks grows as temperature decreases.

Frequency Dependence of Quantum Localization in a Periodically Driven System

We study the quantum localization phenomena for a random matrix model belonging to the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble (GOE). An oscillating external field is applied on the system. After the transient time evolution, energy is saturated to various values depending on the frequencies. We investigate the frequency dependence of the saturated energy. This dependence cannot be explained by a naive picture of successive independent Landau-Zener transitions at avoided level crossing points. The effect of quantum interference is essential. We define the number of Floquet states which have large overlap with the initial state, and calculate its frequency dependence. The number of Floquet states shows approximately linear dependence on the frequency, when the frequency is small. Comparing the localization length in Floquet states and that in energy states from the viewpoint of the Anderson localization, we conclude that the Landau-Zener picture works for the local transition processes between levels.
