Fields of definition of $p$-torsion points of elliptic curves and their ramification

Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}_p$. We study the field $\mathbb{Q}_p(E[p])$ generated by the $p$-torsion points of $E$. When $E$ has good reduction, we determine not only $\mathbb{Q}_p(E[p])$ but also the field $\mathbb{Q}_p(P)$ for every point $P\in E[p]$. This classification yields criteria for the existence of $p$-torsion over unramified and Lubin--Tate extensions of $\mathbb{Q}_p$. As a global application, let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve and let $p$ be an odd prime of good reduction. Define $f_p(E)$ to be the multiplicative order of $a_p(E)$ modulo $p$ in the ordinary case, and set $f_p(E)=p^2-1$ in the supersingular case. We prove that $E(K)[p]=0$ for every number field $K/\mathbb{Q}$ with $[K:\mathbb{Q}]<f_p(E)$. When $E$ has bad reduction, we describe the ramified part of $\mathbb{Q}_p(E[p])/\mathbb{Q}_p$. For every reduction type, we determine the maximal upper ramification break of $\mathbb{Q}_p(E[p])/\mathbb{Q}_p$.

WhisperMask: A Noise Suppressive Mask-Type Microphone for Whisper Speech

Whispering is a common privacy-preserving technique in voice-based interactions, but its effectiveness is limited in noisy environments. In conventional hardware- and software-based noise reduction approaches, isolating whispered speech from ambient noise and other speech sounds remains a challenge. We thus propose WhisperMask, a mask-type microphone featuring a large diaphragm with low sensitivity, making the wearer's voice significantly louder than the background noise. We evaluated WhisperMask using three key metrics: signal-to-noise ratio, quality of recorded voices, and speech recognition rate. Across all metrics, WhisperMask consistently outperformed traditional noise-suppressing microphones and software-based solutions. Notably, WhisperMask showed a 30% higher recognition accuracy for whispered speech recorded in an environment with 80 dB background noise compared with the pin microphone and earbuds. Furthermore, while a denoiser decreased the whispered speech recognition rate of these two microphones by approximately 20% at 30-60 dB noise, WhisperMask maintained a high performance even without denoising, surpassing the other microphones' performances by a significant margin.WhisperMask's design renders the wearer's voice as the dominant input and effectively suppresses background noise without relying on signal processing. This device allows for reliable voice interactions, such as phone calls and voice commands, in a wide range of noisy real-world scenarios while preserving user privacy.

Spontaneous SUSY breaking in natural SO(10) grand unified theory

We propose a simple grand unified theory (GUT) scenario in which supersymmetry (SUSY) is spontaneously broken in visible sector. Our model is based on the GUT model that has been proposed to solve almost all problems in conventional GUT scenarios. In the previous work, the problems can be solved by a natural assumption in a supersymmetric vacuum. In this paper, we consider an extension of the model (i.e. omitting one singlet field) and break SUSY spontaneously without new sector. Our model does not have hidden sector and predicts high-scale SUSY where sfermion masses are of order 100-1000 TeV and flavor violating processes are suppressed. In this scenario, we can see an explicit signature of GUT in sfermion mass spectrum since the sfermion mass spectrum respects SU(5) matter unification. In addition, we find a superheavy long lived charged lepton as a proof of our scenario, and it may be seen in the LHC.

Spontaneous SUSY breaking without R-symmetry in supergravity

We discuss spontaneous supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking in a model with an anomalous $U(1)_A$ symmetry. In this model, the size of the each term in the superpotential is controlled by the $U(1)_A$ charge assignment and SUSY is spontaneously broken via the Fayet-Iliopoulos of $U(1)_A$ at the meta-stable vacuum. In the global SUSY analysis, the gaugino masses become much smaller than the sfermion masses, because an approximate R-symmetry appears at the SUSY breaking vacuum. In this paper, we show that gaugino masses can be as large as gravitino mass, taking the supergravity effect into consideration. This is because the R-symmetry is not imposed so that the constant term in the superpotential, which is irrelevant to the global SUSY analysis, largely contributes to the soft SUSY breaking terms in the supergravity. As the mediation mechanism, we introduce the contributions of the field not charged under $U(1)_A$ and the moduli field to cancel the anomaly of $U(1)_A$. We comment on the application of our SUSY breaking scenario to the GUT models.

Full information maximum likelihood estimation in factor analysis with a lot of missing values

We consider the problem of full information maximum likelihood (FIML) estimation in a factor analysis model when a majority of the data values are missing. The expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm is often used to find the FIML estimates, in which the missing values on observed variables are included in complete data. However, the EM algorithm has an extremely high computational cost when the number of observations is large and/or plenty of missing values are involved. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm that is based on the EM algorithm but that efficiently computes the FIML estimates. A significant improvement in the computational speed is realized by not treating the missing values on observed variables as a part of complete data. Our algorithm is applied to a real data set collected from a Web questionnaire that asks about first impressions of human; almost $90\%$ of the data values are missing. When there are many missing data values, it is not clear if the FIML procedure can achieve good estimation accuracy even if the number of observations is large. In order to investigate this, we conduct Monte Carlo simulations under a wide variety of sample sizes.

An identification for Eisenstein polynomials over a p-adic field

In this note, we give a criteria whether given two Eisenstein polynomials over a padic field define the same extension (Proposition 1.6). In particular, we completely identify Eisenstein polynomials of degree p (Theorem 1.16). This note is an English translation of a part of the original paper [12].

A refinement of the local class field theory of Serre and Hazewinkel

We give a refinement of the local class field theory of Serre and Hazewinkel. This refinement allows the theory to treat extensions that are not necessarily totally ramified. Such a refinement was obtained and used in the authors' paper on Fontaine's property (Pm), where the explanation had to be rather brief. In this paper, we give a complete account, from necessary knowledge of an appropriate Grothendieck site to the details of the proof. We start by reviewing the local class field theory of Serre and Hazewinkel.
