Bit Threads: From Entanglement to Geometric Entropies

In this work, we attempt to construct bit thread configurations for various backgrounds using expressions from the covariant phase space formalism. We find that when the Ryu-Takayanagi surface is same as the horizon, such expressions are sufficient. In other cases, it differs by gradient of a harmonic function. We explore its relation to Wald and differential entropy, and re-express the first law of entanglement entropy in terms of bit threads. Inclusion of quantum effects imposes some constraints on the bulk entanglement via the dominant energy condition. We also apply our method to ascertain a bit thread configuration in a certain dynamical spacetime.

Quasiparticle tunnelling in two coupled chiral SYK model

The chiral SYK model is a 1+1 dimensional generalisation of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model with chiral Majorana fermions and homogeneous random interactions. In the large-N limit, the model admits an exact solution of the two-point function due to its scaling symmetry and exhibits a quantised thermal Hall conductance consistent with that of a 2+1-dimensional gapped topological system. We study two chiral SYK systems coupled by a relevant quadratic interaction that explicitly breaks scaling and time-reversal symmetry. Working in the regime of weak intersystem coupling, we solve the Dyson-Schwinger equations perturbatively and obtain analytic expressions for two-point functions at finite temperature. Unlike the coupled SYK model in 0+1 dimensions, the 1+1-dimensional chiral system does not develop a mass gap, and no thermal phase transition is observed. We show that the leading correction to the thermodynamic free energy is temperature independent, implying that the entropy density remains identical to that of two uncoupled chiral SYK systems. A real-time analysis of the retarded correlator reveals the emergence of massless collective bosonic modes propagating between the two subsystems at zero temperature, signalling quasiparticle tunnelling without gap generation. Our results demonstrate a sharp qualitative distinction between relevant deformations of SYK models in zero and one spatial dimensions, and highlight the robustness of gapless chiral edge dynamics against explicit scaling symmetry-breaking interactions.

Asymptotically flat anisotropic space-time in 5 dimensions

We construct and investigate non conformal anisotropic Bianchi type VII solutions in 5 dimensions. The solutions are asymptotically flat, but they contain a naked singularity at the origin. We also construct solutions of Einstein-Maxwell gravity using the method employed in Majumdar -Papapetrou solutions with various profiles of charged dust. In a fictitious case of negative matter density, we obtain a solution with horizon hiding the singularity.

Chiral vortices in relativistic hydrodynamics

Towards modelling the charge asymmetry observed in heavy ion collisions, we present here analytic solutions of relativistic hydrodynamics containing parity violating and anomalous terms at the first order in the hydrodynamic approximation. These terms can induce chiral magnetic and chiral vortical effect leading to the generation of the charge asymmetry. We also consider sphaleron solutions with non trivial winding number to model the phenomenon. We calculate the net chiral charge difference produced in our solutions. We anticipate their relevance also in the context of baryogenesis in early universe, neutron star and some condensed matter situations.

Hydrodynamics of R-charged D1-branes

We study the hydrodynamic properties of strongly coupled $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory of the D1-brane at finite temperature and at a non-zero density of R-charge in the framework of gauge/gravity duality. The gravity dual description involves a charged black hole solution of an Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton system in 3 dimensions which is obtained by a consistent truncation of the spinning D1-brane in 10 dimensions. We evaluate thermal and electrical conductivity as well as the bulk viscosity as a function of the chemical potential conjugate to the R-charges of the D1-brane. We show that the ratio of bulk viscosity to entropy density is independent of the chemical potential and is equal to $1/4π$. The thermal conductivity and bulk viscosity obey a relationship similar to the Wiedemann-Franz law. We show that at the boundary of thermodynamic stability, the charge diffusion mode becomes unstable and the transport coefficients exhibit critical behaviour. Our method for evaluating the transport coefficients relies on expressing the second order differential equations in terms of a first order equation which dictates the radial evolution of the transport coefficient. The radial evolution equations can be solved exactly for the transport coefficients of our interest. We observe that transport coefficients of the D1-brane theory are related to that of the M2-brane by an overall proportionality constant which sets the dimensions.

Phases of one dimensional large N gauge theory in a 1/D expansion

We consider large N Yang Mills theory with D adjoint scalar fields in d dimensions for d=0 or 1. We show the existence of a non-trivial saddle point of the functional integral at large D which is characterized by a mass gap for the adjoint scalars. We integrate out the adjoint scalars in a 1/D expansion around the saddle point. In case of one dimension which is regarded as a circle, this procedure leads to an effective action for the Wilson line. We find an analogue of the confinement/deconfinement transition which consists of a second order phase transition from a uniform to a non-uniform eigenvalue distribution of the Wilson line, closely followed by a Gross-Witten-Wadia transition where a gap develops in the eigenvalue distribution. The phase transition can be regarded as a continuation of a Gregory-Laflamme transition. Our methods involve large values of the dimensionless 'tHooft coupling. The analysis in this paper is quantitatively supported by earlier numerical work for D=9.

Hydrodynamics from the D1-brane

We study the hydrodynamic properties of strongly coupled SU(N) Yang-Mills theory of the D1-brane at finite temperature in the framework of gauge/gravity duality. The only non-trivial viscous transport coefficient in 1+1 dimensions is the bulk viscosity. We evaluate the bulk viscosity by isolating the quasi-normal mode corresponding to the sound channel for the gravitational background of the D1-brane. We find that the ratio of the bulk viscosity to the entropy density to be 1/4π. This ratio continues to be $1/4π$ also in the regime when the D1-brane Yang-Mills theory is dual to the gravitational background of the fundamental string. Our analysis shows that this ratio is equal to 1/4πfor a class of gravitational backgrounds dual to field theories in 1+1 dimensions obtained by considering D1-branes at cones over Sasaki-Einstein 7-manifolds.

Black Holes in Cascading Theories: Confinement/Deconfinement Transition and other Thermal Properties

We present numerical evidence for a transition between the Klebanov-Strassler background and a solution describing a black hole in the class of cascading solutions in the chirally restored phase. We also present a number of properties of this solution, including the running of the coupling constant, the viscosity to entropy ratio and the drag force on a quark moving in this background.

Mapping the G-structures and supersymmetric vacua of five-dimensional N=4 supergravity

We classify the supersymmetric vacua of N=4, d=5 supergravity in terms of G-structures. We identify three classes of solutions: with R^3, SU(2) and generic SO(4) structure. Using the Killing spinor equations, we fully characterize the first two classes and partially solve the latter. With the N=4 graviton multiplet decomposed in terms of N=2 multiplets: the graviton, vector and gravitino multiplets, we obtain new supersymmetric solutions corresponding to turning on fields in the gravitino multiplet. These vacua are described in terms of an SO(5) vector sigma-model coupled with gravity, in three or four dimensions. A new feature of these N=4 vacua, which is not seen from an N=2 point of view, is the possibility for preserving more exotic fractions of supersymmetry. We give a few concrete examples of these new supersymmetric (albeit singular) solutions. Additionally, we show how by truncating the N=4, d=5 set of fields to minimal supergravity coupled with one vector multiplet we recover the known two-charge solutions.

Finite Heisenbeg Groups and Seiberg Dualities in Quiver Gauge Theories

A large class of quiver gauge theories admits the action of finite Heisenberg groups of the form Heis(Z_q x Z_q). This Heisenberg group is generated by a manifest Z_q shift symmetry acting on the quiver along with a second Z_q rephasing (clock) generator acting on the links of the quiver. Under Seiberg duality, however, the action of the shift generator is no longer manifest, as the dualized node has a different structure from before. Nevertheless, we demonstrate that the Z_q shift generator acts naturally on the space of all Seiberg dual phases of a given quiver. We then prove that the space of Seiberg dual theories inherits the action of the original finite Heisenberg group, where now the shift generator Z_q is a map among fields belonging to different Seiberg phases. As examples, we explicitly consider the action of the Heisenberg group on Seiberg phases for C^3/Z_3, Y^{4,2} and Y^{6,3} quiver.

Towards Supergravity Duals of Chiral Symmetry Breaking in Sasaki-Einstein Cascading Quiver Theories

We construct a first order deformation of the complex structure of the cone over Sasaki-Einstein spaces Y^{p,q} and check supersymmetry explicitly. This space is a central element in the holographic dual of chiral symmetry breaking for a large class of cascading quiver theories. We discuss a solution describing a stack of N D3 branes and M fractional D3 branes at the tip of the deformed spaces.

Beyond the Horizon

Cosmic horizons arise in general relativity in the context of black holes and in certain cosmologies. Classically, regions beyond a horizon are inaccessible to causal observers. However, quantum mechanical correlations may exist across horizons that may influence local observations. For the case of de Sitter space, we show how a single particle excitation behind the horizon changes the density matrix governing local observables. As compared to the vacuum state, we calculate the change in the average energy and entropy per unit volume. This illustrates what may be a generic property allowing some features of spacetime beyond a horizon to be inferred.
