Constructing bounded orbits of special types on homogeneous spaces

Let $X = G/Γ$ be a quotient of a real Lie group by a non-uniform lattice. Consider a one-parameter subgroup $F$ of $G$ that is $\operatorname{Ad}$-diagonalizable over $\mathbb{C}$ and whose action on $(X,m_X)$ is mixing. In this dynamical system we study the set of points $x \in X$ with a precompact orbit, written as $E(F,\infty)$, which is known to be a dense subset of $X$ of full Hausdorff dimension. We prove that $E(F,\infty)$ is indecomposable in the following sense: given any $y \in E(F,\infty)$, the set of $x \in E(F,\infty)$ for which $y \in \overline{F_+x}$, where $F_+$ denotes the positive ray in $F$, is uncountable and dense in $E(F,\infty)$. When the dimension of the neutral subgroup of $G$ with respect to $F$ is $1$ we demonstrate, for any $\varepsilon>0$, the existence of many points $x \in X$ whose orbit closure $\overline{F_+x} \subset X$ is compact and has Hausdorff dimension at least $\dim X - \varepsilon$.

Effective equidistribution of semisimple adelic periods and representations of quadratic forms

We prove an effective equidistribution theorem for semisimple closed orbits on compact adelic quotients. The obtained error depends polynomially on the minimal complexity of intermediate orbits and the complexity of the ambient space. The proof uses dynamical arguments, property $(τ)$, Prasad's volume formula, an effective closing lemma, and a novel effective generation result for subgroups. The latter in turn relies on an effective version of Greenberg's theorem. We apply the above to the problem of establishing a local-global principle for representations of integral quadratic forms, improving the codimension assumptions and providing effective bounds in a theorem of Ellenberg and Venkatesh.

Rigidity of non-maximal torus actions, unipotent quantitative recurrence, and Diophantine approximations

We present a new argument in the study of positive entropy measures for higher rank diagonalisable actions. The argument relies on a quantitative form of recurrence along unipotent directions (that are not known to preserve the measure). Using this argument we prove a classification of positive entropy measures for any higher rank action on an irreducible arithmetic quotient of a form of $SL_2$. We also provide an Adelic version of this classification result where no entropy assumption is needed. These results can also be used to prove new results regarding Diophantine approximations of integer multiples of an arbitrary element $α\in\mathbb{R}$.

Planes in four space and four associated CM points

To any two-dimensional rational plane in four-dimensional space one can naturally attach a point in the Grassmannian Gr(2,4) and four lattices of rank two. Here, the first two lattices originate from the plane and its orthogonal complement and the second two essentially arise from the accidental local isomorphism between SO(4) and SO(3)xSO(3). As an application of a recent result of Einsiedler and Lindenstrauss on algebraicity of joinings we prove simultaneous equidistribution of all of these objects under two splitting conditions.

Primitive rational points on expanding horocycles in products of the modular surface with the torus

We prove effective equidistribution of primitive rational points and of primitive rational points defined by monomials along long horocycle orbits in products of the torus and the modular surface. This answers a question posed in joint work by the first and the last named author with Shahar Mozes and Uri Shapira. Under certain congruence conditions we prove the joint equidistribution of conjugate rational points in the two-torus and the modular surface.

Effective equidistribution and property tau

We prove a quantitative equidistribution statement for adelic homogeneous subsets whose stabilizer is maximal and semisimple. Fixing the ambient space, the statement is uniform in all parameters. We explain how this implies certain equidistribution theorems which, even in a qualitative form, are not accessible to measure-classification theorems. As another application, we describe another proof of property tau for arithmetic groups.

Measure rigidity for solvable group actions in the space of lattices

We study invariant probability measures on the homogeneous space $\mathrm{SL}_n(\mathbb R)/\mathrm{SL}_n(\mathbb Z)$ for the action of subgroups of $\mathrm{SL}_n(\mathbb R)$ of the form $SF$ where $F$ is generated by one parameter unipotent groups and $S$ is a one parameter $\mathbb R$-diagonalizable group normalizing $F$. Under the assumption that $S$ contains an element with only one eigenvalue less than one (counted with multiplicity) and others bigger than one we prove that all the $SF$ invariant and ergodic probability measures on $\mathrm{SL}_n(\mathbb R)/\mathrm{SL}_n(\mathbb Z)$ are homogeneous.

On effective equidistribution for quotients of SL(d)

We prove the first case of polynomially effective equidistribution of closed orbits of semisimple groups with nontrivial centralizer. The proof relies on uniform spectral gap, builds on, and extends work of Einsiedler, Margulis, and Venkatesh.

Symmetry of entropy in higher rank diagonalizable actions and measure classification

An important consequence of the theory of entropy of Z-actions is that the events measurable with respect to the far future coincide (modulo null sets) with those measurable with respect to the distant past, and that measuring the entropy using the past will give the same value as measuring it using the future. In this paper we show that for measures invariant under multiparameter algebraic actions if the entropy attached to coarse Lyapunov foliations fail to display a stronger symmetry property of a similar type this forces the measure to be invariant under non-trivial unipotent groups. Some consequences of this phenomenon are noted.

Quantitative multiple mixing

We develop a method for providing quantitative estimates for higher order correlations of group actions. In particular, we establish effective mixing of all orders for actions of semisimple Lie groups as well as semisimple $S$-algebraic groups and semisimple adele groups. As an application, we deduce existence of approximate configurations in lattices of semisimple groups.

Distribution of Shapes of orthogonal Lattices

It was recently shown by Aka, Einsiedler and Shapira that if d>2, the set of primitive vectors on large spheres when projected to the d-1-dimensional sphere coupled with the shape of the lattice in their orthogonal complement equidistribute in the product space of the sphere with the space of shapes of d-1-dimensional lattices. Specifically, for d=3,4,5 some congruence conditions are assumed. By using recent advances in the theory of unipotent flows, we effectivize the dynamical proof to remove those conditions for d=4,5. It also follows that equidistribution takes place with a polynomial error term with respect to the length of the primitive points.

Integer points on spheres and their orthogonal grids

The set of primitive vectors on large spheres in the euclidean space of dimension d>2 equidistribute when projected on the unit sphere. We consider here a refinement of this problem concerning the direction of the vector together with the shape of the lattice in its orthogonal complement. Using unipotent dynamics we obtained the desired equidistribution result in dimension d>5 and in dimension d=4,5 under a mild congruence condition on the square of the radius. The case of d=3 is considered in a separate paper.

Equidistribution of primitive rational points on expanding horospheres

We confirm a conjecture of Jens Marklof regarding the equidistribution of certain sparse collections of points on expanding horospheres. These collections are obtained by intersecting the expanded horosphere with a certain manifold of complementary dimension and turns out to be of arithmetic nature. This equidistribution result is then used along the lines suggested by Marklof to give an analogue of a result of W. Schmidt regarding the distribution of shapes of lattices orthogonal to integer vectors.

Integer points and their orthogonal lattices

Linnik proved in the late 1950's the equidistribution of integer points on large spheres under a congruence condition. The congruence condition was lifted in 1988 by Duke (building on a break-through by Iwaniec) using completely different techniques. We conjecture that this equidistribution result also extends to the pairs consisting of a vector on the sphere and the shape of the lattice in its orthogonal complement. We use a joining result for higher rank diagonalizable actions to obtain this conjecture under an additional congruence condition.

On the complexity of a putative counterexample to the $p$-adic Littlewood conjecture

Let $|| \cdot ||$ denote the distance to the nearest integer and, for a prime number $p$, let $| \cdot |_p$ denote the $p$-adic absolute value. In 2004, de Mathan and Teulié asked whether $\inf_{q \ge 1} \, q \cdot || q α|| \cdot | q |_p = 0$ holds for every badly approximable real number $α$ and every prime number $p$. Among other results, we establish that, if the complexity of the sequence of partial quotients of a real number $α$ grows too rapidly or too slowly, then their conjecture is true for the pair $(α, p)$ with $p$ an arbitrary prime.
